Peace to all. I have just started playing and recently aquired an Ovation 1661 Balladeer. It was made in 1983 according to the code info. I don't know much about Ovations, but I know I really like the way mine feels and plays. It is in mint condition with the original case, which also looks like new. Is there someone who could fill me in on some of the history of this guitar and maybe enlighten me on the value. I'm not going to let it go, just want ot know what I have.

Thanks and Peace
Don

Midas;

Are you sure it's a 1661? That doesn't seem to jive with the codes. Did you mean a 1616 classical?

Hey Mike,thanks for the reply. The sticker inside says model 1661 serial number 279920. Maybe I didn't look up the code correctly. Kinda new at this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The 1661 was among the first generation of Ovation cutaways, and was the Standard Balladeer deep bowl cutaway. The model designation only lasted two years, 1983 and 1984, although it appears on the price lists from 1982-84. It has a piezo electric pickup with concentric stacking volume and tone knobs.

Being a USA model, it has a solid Sitka spruce top; however, as it is the entry level USA model, the top is the lowest grade available (A grade). By 1985 the Standard Balladeer with deep bowl was no longer an option.

Regarding price, its value would be on par with other USA Standard Balladeer models of the same aesthetic condition, taking into account the advantage of the cutaway. Price is always subjective, given the value that a prospective buyer places on the piece.
