Hey guys & gals, I was wondering if anyone could help me with what kind of strap is right for a new LX elite. I don't have it yet and it says on the website that they come with strap-lok buttons. What is the best strap to use. Thanks! MO

Hey Mo, welcome to the party!

It's not a question of what kind of strap is right for use with the strap lock buttons. Any strap that you like will do. But how you attach them to your guitar is the variable.

First, you can go to the music store and buy a set of strap locks, then discard the buttons that attach to the guitar, attach the part that goes on the strap to the strap of your choice, and attach the strap to the guitar with the strap locks. I've got one strap that has the locks attached to it. I rarely use it even tho' it assures that the guitar wil never come lose from the strap.

The second choice (and people here will disagree with me -- they always do!), to to just attach the strap to the strap locks on the guitar, slipping the holes of the strap over the buttons. The reason I do that (and it's reasnably secure, but not 100%), is that I like to put the cord between the strap and the body of the guitar which keeps the cable from moving around or being pulled out of the guitar if it's stepped on.

Thoughts guys?

Mo;

(first of all, WELCOME!)
If you can't find the StrapLok buttons, shoot me an e-mail with your address. I think I have may have an extra set of the parts that affix to your strap (providing you're not "particular" about color/finish) rattling around somewhere. Just bear in mind that once you install these into the button holes of your strap, it negates your ability to use said stap on any guitars that DON'T have StrapLoks.

Lemme know if you need 'em . . .

Welcome Mo,

These guys are right, as well as having their own preferences. You will no doubt develop your own.

Here is one source for the Dunlop Straplock system:
Stew Mac Straplocs

The kit is available through many other sites as well. They come in chrome, gold and black. I have them on all of my guitars and straps. If you have ever seen an instrument slip and crash you will appreciate the straploc system.

Any extra parts from the kit can be recycled on non-equipped instruments.

What Moody said about catching the cable is a good technique but you can accomplish the same thing with other techniques such as velcro loops and such.

On older Ovations with a thinner screw hole at the strap button you may need to use the original screw after you file down the head.

Use the search option and look into many other opinions and options. Margarita optional!

Buy the schaller strap locks or any good lock.

First thing you do when you get a new guitar and a cheap price to pay to keep that guitar off the floor with you standing over it, your mouth and eyes wide open staring at the pieces.

It happens I've been there! If you buy the same style locks for any guitar you buy in the future the the strap/or straps can be come interchangeable. And keep the original buttons from your guitar they can be worth a few bucks someday when you decide to sell your guitar but you want to keep the strap locks and strap. And if it's an old guitar the buttons have collector value to the guitar as well.

Personally I think using a strap without the locks is a disaster waiting to happen! The strap gets soft and a little worn out where the buttons go through and you get used to moving that guitar around and adjusting your amp, or taking a drink, or smoking a butt, and when your hand is off the guitar... that is when it decides to jump right out of that nice trusty strap hole and become a worthless pile of twisted strings and wood with a leather tail on one end of the heap.

Buy the Strap Locks and a set of strings and that guitar is officially yours for as long as you want it!

Can I assume that my "ghetto" approach of using a black plumbing washer to keep my strap on the button is not looked upon with favor by my fellow OFC'ers?

Clifford -- if the man had class, would he be hanging around at this site???

Actually, that's not a bad idea for those of us who like to keep the strap snugged up to the body.

John Pearse also sells straps that have a loop attached to the strap by the butt hole of the strap (that came out wrong) into which you can insert the strap.

I'm either too cheap or not perverted enough to get the strap but here's a link
http://www.jpstrings.com/braccess.htm#Straps
just scroll down and you'll find the straps.

Thanks! Does anyone find that strap-loks can hit the guitar and scratch it?

About as much as your wristwatch can . . .
(if you're careless enough, anything'll scratch it . . .)

The Strap-Loc thing has come up over and over on the board. I wonder why Ovation doesn't furnish the strap ends with a new guitar. Since I have yet to buy a NEW Ovation, maybe they do?

All you get is the end pins.

I would like it if they sold an Ovation Strap with the Dunlop Straploc fittings attached.

Pronounced "P-L-E-A-S-E"

I've said this before but...since Dunlop and others only sell them in sets, there must be a whole lot of barrels at the factory with the other pieces in them. I looked all over but never found 'em.

Too bad daddario (aka planet waves) doesn't sell something like a dunlop strap lock (I know they sell a strap with a lock) (or do they?) because their customer service is good and they already have a relationship with ovation re: strings. I like their retro straps (They have some leather thin ones with a pad, and nylon webbed ones with cool designs, get one of each! when you get your strap lock).

I have a leather padded from Dangerous Threads out of Nashville, TN. They make straps for the such as Aerosmith and other notables. I have it on my Std. Elite LX!
