I went to a friends house last night and got to play a real nice FD-14 Folklore. That is a sweet guitar. It also looks as good as it sounds. He also has a model 1537 Elite that has seen better days, but sounds great. After we jammed awhile he asked me which Ovations I prefer, the round hole or the multi-hole Elite styles. I told him I really like them the same. Both styles sound great to me, and both keep the classic Ovation body shape. How do you guys feel? Which model do you like better? Round hole, multi-hole, or both?

Multi-hole, because I own one (Elite model 1718), and because they're "different" (how's that for a totally objective rationale for preferring one over the other?).

Paul, You obviously pick your friends based on their guitars! Hard to think of a better combo than a 1537 and an FD14. WOW!

The subject of center hole vs. multihole has been discussed over and over on this board and there are split opinions, so I doubt your post will result in any "conclusion" other than everybody stating their opinions. Well, I guess that's true of every post, isn't it?

So here is mine. For looks and usually sound, I am strictly a center hole guy. The shiny bowl series and FD14 are truely stunning guitars visuslly and sonically. There are of course multihole guitars that are fabulous. The 1537 is certainly one and something called a "textured top Adamas" also comes to mind.

A friend of my wife's asked her if I preferred single hole or multihole. When my wife replied "single hole", her friend said "lucky you".

I found something strange about my friends FD-14 Folklore. The area behing the brdge had a hump in it. Seems the top from behind the bridge all the way to the lower bout of the guitar had a buldge in it. You could see it and really feel it when you put your hand across it. Does anyone elses FD-14 do this? Seemed strange to me?

Who cares how many holes are in it as long as it has the oil finished five-piece neck.

:D

Just as long as they have a hole in them.

Sounds like a loose brace? Ought to send it to the factory to get checked.

a loose brace would usually let you know it's there with a buzz or rattle. Flat-top guitars are almost never flat and a very slight rise over time in the lower bout, behind the bridge, is not only normal, but if it's not present it's usually the sign of either an over-built guitar or pussy strings.

The area behind the bridge on my 67/68 Deluxe Balladeer was bulging up just a little with medium gauge strings. Sounded great but I was worried, so I went to light gauge strings. Same bulge. Didn't sound as good. So I went back to medium. The guitar feels solid and plays great.

I was going to post essentially the same as what Mr. Templeman said, but he's so much more...eloquent than I. What more can be said. :)

So are we still participating in that self imposed moratorium on questionable humor from a couple of weeks ago?

Wait...pain...too many jokes.

It's when I ask myself what is "questionable" is where I always seem to run into trouble . . .

. . . to ASK what is "questionable" is synonymous to "questioning a question", thereby NEGATING said "question" . .

????

. . . or does it negate the "questionability" of the "question"??? . . . .or the "questionability"?? . . ???

Y'see what I mean???
(did I post somewhere earlier that I need t'sleep??)

I wouldn't worry about the "bulge" . .
. . . it happens (sadly sometimes, in more ways than one) to the best of us . .

G'night Mary Ellen.

G'night Jim Bob.

I can never remember the middle sisters name. It's caused me to lose 4 months sleep.
