Over the weekend, I went to a party at a couple of friends' new home. One friend had given me a box of old stuff that he had lying around from his old public address equipment business years (and years!)ago. In it was a bunch of cables, and some some cheepy little mics and such.

But also in it was a pair of old Shure 55 mics:

I always LOVED these mics because they had that campy, "old" look to them. I even had an old one that I'd acquired from an old bandmate that'd taken it apart and reassembled/rewired it (incorrectly). After that it'd spent many years in various musty old basements. It still looks cool but is totally dysfunctional. I'm considering converting it into a gear shift knob for the Cruiser.

Anyway, . . anybody have any working experience with these mics? How "bad" are they compared to say the SM57/58's? I'd thought that if they weren't absolutely attrocious mics, I might consider using the "funky" look factor of 'em at duo gigs. I'd also probably need to have new cables made for em, as the existing ones are about as "non XLR" as you can possibly get. . .

Any suggestions??

before you throw out those "crappy little mics" let me know what they are, you may be surprised.

In another life I have been known as the king of microphones but I digress....

the 55 is a KILLER cool mic. That is why it was a standard for so many years.
If you need any additional info let me know.

Thanks!, Al;

Besides the pair o'55's, there was another Shure (can't recall the model - it looks like a 57, but shorter/stubbier) that I might consider as a ancillary guitar mic, and a desk mic with a square push-button built into the base that your principal woulda' used to make school announcements over the intercom. The rest were just a few plastichrome, cassette recorder-grade mics styled as half-size 58's (I don't think they were even branded) . . .

The 55's have cables that screw on at the mic-end, and have the old-style screw-on "P.A." connector on the other. I know that they make (or USED to make) little adaptors that screw on and have a 1/4" plug-end on em . . .
D'ya think it might be possible t'get an XLR cable for 'em??

I agree. Put on on the PT.

I've got an old Shure SM59 that is a wonderful mic.

My son (the rockabilly rebel) came home with one, couldn't get it to work, and found out there was nothing inside ... it was just a shell. He ended up buying a re-release version of the mic (I think they call it a 55 series II) ... it's actually a pretty decent stage mic, although a lot less sensitive than my Sennheisers. But it's the look that counts for him, and it shure is a cool look.
