Hi Folks I've been looking at a LR Baggs Para-Acoustic DI. Has anyone used one of these or another brand. I could use some of your thoughts.

I have used one and found it to be a good box. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's the best in its price range, since there are quite a few DI units that can be had for $100, or so. But the one I had was well made, reliable, and had a nice transparent sound to it.

the Baggs is one of the best of it's type. It doesn't have the bells and whistles of some of the latest stuff like the Fishman Aura, but it's a workhorse, a pro piece of kit. The Sansamp Acoustic DI & the Boss AD5 are both worth considering but they're a little more expensive than the Baggs.

Paulcc1;

I have one and it works great. Its controls are very felxable and it is of rugged construction. I haven't tried a lot of others but you couldn't go wrong with this one.

I heard kaki king last month (year!) and her sans amp was excellent.

I use a BBE DI-100x. Very nice unit with the required features.

I believe they are available from AMS, Muscians Friend, etc., along with some reviews.

I settled on a Boss AD5, and have used it for years. Used ones can be found for pretty good prices. I haven't tried the Sans Amp or later generation Fishman or BBE boxes.

Speaking of DI's, with the OP50 pre-amp with XLR out, technically you don't really need a DI. But does using a Boss or Sansamp, etc improve your sound anyway by taking away some of the piezo "quack"?.

Yes they do help....Even though the OP 50 has an XLR, they are usually not as balanced as say Baggs DI I use, they also have phase invertion, sweepable mid frequency and a sweepable notch. The preamp is of very high quality and the EQ is much more precise and wider than built in preamps.

Hi Guys,
I run my Ovation through a Fender Acoustasonic amp would it do me well to use either a Fishman Pro EQ or the LR Baggs Para-Acoustic DI?
Thanks Paul

Another good choice is the Aphex "Acoustic Exciter". It's not only a good D.I. box, but it greatly improves the sound of piezo pick ups. It works great on Ovations. It's reasonably priced as well. As for the "Para Acoustic", I've used one for years now and never had a problem with it.

Although I am not gigging as much these days, you will notice that most all professional acoustic guitarists will use a DI....it helps all matters of acoustic environments as well as removing the harshness of pickups. Allowing more of a miked tone with the freedom of a pickup. IMO as far as getting the truest acoustic tone a mike is tops, but along with that comes stage problems. There are many DI/Preamps on the market some up to 3-4 hundred dollars for rack mounted units used with wirless systems. However...there may be some times when you prefer the pickup quack...just depends on what you are looking for. Devoted acoustic amps are not all created equal...and don't do the best job...I usually, in live settings use my amp as a monitor and the DI works great for the house PA systems I run across. Gotta have a DI!.. It also works great if you use an electric amp instead of a dedicated acoustic amp. The new Fishman Aura is very cool and uses a different principle, almost like modeling but is suppose to be not??? It is bulky and more expensive. Sounds good though!
AND
Transducers are ultra high impedance devices. Therefore, to attain maximum sonic performance, a preamp/buffer must be used. A buffer takes the ultra high impedance signal and converts it to a standard high impedance signal which most guitar amps, PAs and recording equipment can handle.
Not to mention EQ capabilities...As well as mentioned above. This is *one* the reason they are desirable for putting everything inpeadance wise in perspective.
