Ibanez ??? Don't know anything about the guitar. But I used to know a girl named Ibanez. It was short for "I been easy".

Ibanez makes nice inexpensive instruments. Something like this one makes for a fun starter jazz box. Just don't expect it to be an ES 175.

Played one yesterday at the local GC. Felt and played like a $300 guitar, which isn't to say it was bad. You just get the typical cheap pickups with a guitar in this range which seem to lack versitility. Also, the build on the one I played was good but not great. Had some bleed through on the binding and some of the frets were rough and I thought a couple of them were high (but so was the action on this particular guitar). With a little set up work and some good pups, it would be a decent player for under $600 total cost.

I think a much better guitar for the money is a RAVEN. The owner recently died and the Estate trustees are blowing out all the inventory on Ebay (search Raven under guitars). The build is fantastic, the necks are exceptional and the pups are ok/marginal. I owned 3 of these and after changing the pups out in a couple, they were easily the equal of guitars costing 2-3 times as much. They normally sold in the $500-700 range but have been going on eBay for $200-300 or less.

She's no Blonde Thunderhead like yours Paul, but the reviews seem good, she's affordable, and I have been thinking about a hollowbody.

Just kicking it around. I never owned an Ibanez...nor knew one biblically

I like picking finger style, and I thought this might give me the mellow tones of a classical, yet be versatile enough to do 50's 60's and contemporary.

Stephen,

I checked out the Raven Hollowbody. Pretty guitar. My biggest hang-ups with it, are the two statements;
WE DO NOT KNOW THE CONDITION OF THIS GUITAR
and

GUITAR IS SOLD AS IS...ALL SALES ARE FINAL

Sounds like you had good luck though.

Well, I think the disclaimers are just becoming a part of doing business on Ebay. As trustee's to the estate that probably don't really know half of the stuff they sale. I did send them an email before I bought my RM680 jazz guitar and they responded fairly promptly......basically said if the guitar wasn't as represented in the pics and description they would take care of me. As a last resort, charge by cc and you can also protest the charges and have them removed.

The main thing is the statement that the guitars are brand new in the box. The RM680 I got was in perfect condition (although packaging could have been better) with all the plastic still on the pickguard, pickups, etc. Tuned her up, removed the plastic, and was amazed at how well they were put together and how sweetly they played.

I would personally have to rate the Raven about 2X -3X better than the Ibanez that I played at GC.

Food for thought...I am sure you will enjoy whichever choice you make.

Well, a slight model number change but this is pretty much the RM-680 jazzer that I got from them.

Also, check out the reviews at Harmony Central on the 680's

And my other personal favorite the RP-450

Anyway, good luck in the search ;)

This must be a new Chineese Ibanez. They used to be from Japan and those were pretty good but they'd never be $300, more like a grand now I'd think.
