Does anyone know the reasoning behind ovation not releasing a 2004 collectors edition? I think they released the 1779-cm for the 30th anniversary of this model, but is that supposed to take the place of the 2004 C.E.? It just seems strange for them to release every year since 1982 , then just skip a year. Maybe it's me. thanks for any replies , peace mike |

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | Mike, my understanding from here is that the 30CL Custom Legend did take the place of the 2004 Collectors model. Why they didn't just call it the 2004 Collectors instead of the 30th Anniversary Custom Legend, I haven't a clue (shrug shoulders)......

Location: Phoenix AZ | Just a guess on my part (I'm not really a marketing guy) - Probably they looked at the forecast and realistically determined that the market would not support both a 2004 Collector AND a Custom Legend 30th. Probably decided that the name "Custom Legend 30th" would generate more "buzz" than just another in a long line of Collectors editions. They made the right call. By all accounts I think the CL30 was a great success. Probably was instrumental in them deciding that there is in fact a market for "re-issues" and this lead to the go-ahead for the planned re-issues in the coming years. For 2005 they have again gone back to the formula of introducing new technology (new bowl shape) in a Collectors Edition that will eventually work in's way into mainstream production models in the following years. To my opinion, the thought processes and planning within the development and factory are well done and logical. External execution of the Marketing plan sometimes leave us "fans" scratching their heads. Probably Rick and the boys know exactly WHAT to do and would love to do it, but their hands and wallets are tied by Big Brother. But hell, what do I know about marketing anyway ... |

Doesn't mean that there aren't a few new ones out there but the factory has sold them.
This is a reissue that has exceeded the prior Custom Legends both as an acoustic and a/e. Yet, IMHO, it celebrates the best of the prior 30 years.
Also, maybe they were just too busy trying to increase production on the LX? Maybe they projected the LX appeal...I believe they were surprised, selling all they could produce.
Only negative observation that I have is the 30th Anniv CL issue was not numbered (i.e., 15 of 300.) |
