This is the third old balladeer I've seen like this that does NOT have the 5 piece neck. Anyone know why? I've got two guitars close to this in serial number (241 and 1182) that DO have the 5 piece neck. Strange.

First answer, NO

second answer, maybe it had the neck replaced during the time when std bd necks were 2 piece and they used one of those(even though they werer k-bar, they just built one up from scratch without it)

third answer, dunno.

There's a pic of Glen Campbell and Jose Feliciano on TV Guide, from about 1968. Glen's playing a Balladeer, and it doesn't have a 5 piece neck. In fact, the headstock looks like a Tornado headstock.

Hey Paul, I think that GC guitar is even stranger! Looks like it has no heel. I think you're right, it's literally like a tornado neck bolted onto the balladeer somehow.

I know the picture you guys are referring to, and while I hadn't noticed the unusual neck, I do seem to recall that guitar having an aritst-shallow bowl. Wonder if that was an early proto for the GC and Artist Balladeer series?

It would be a VERY early Artist line prototype as the pic was taken before the Goodtime Hour came on the air. My guess is that it was one of the very first times Glen's pic was taken with an Ovation.

I believe Witko once commented on how sloppily it appeared that the strings were secured to the bridge on Jose's guitar and it looked like a blind man had done the restringing.

He might be blind, but that dude can PLAY!

I heard that Jose, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and Andrea Bocelli once played a concert at Carneige Hall together. It was their lifelong dream come true. Well, actually it was just some garage in midtown, but they never knew the difference. Heck why spoil someones dream.

Interesting guitar. It does look like a Tornado type neck...you can see the maple at the top of the headstock. The "book" mentions Charlie giving Glen his first Ovation after a concert in New Jersey...that's probably it.
