Location: Peoria, Illinois | I had a chance to work with my new 1861 Balladeer tonight. Thanks to the fine information I have been reading here, I was ready to remove a shim or two to lower the action. I found 3 shims in place after removing the saddle, and took 2 out. Re-strung and action is perfect for me.
I am really enjoying my first Ovation. |

Location: Midland, MI | The OFC rule, and I believe it is codified in section 3, sub A, part ii of the agreement you 'signed' when you joined, clearly states that if you consider the action to be too high on your Ovation, you must install heavier gauge strings as opposed to removing shims.
Of course, we all know that there are exceptions which serve only to prove the rule, and here on the OFC, there have been exceptions. As I recall, there was a special meeting of the Star Chamber in each of those cases to consider and weigh the relative merits of the individual circumstances, as presented. Since I have been a member of the Star Chamber, we have yet to decline a request for shim removal in lieu of heavier strings. In one instance, the owner (incidentally, that's the colloquial term applied to those whom we deign to allow temporary custody of an Ovation product) had already installed flatwound 16s and considered the action too high. As there aren't really any alternative gauges heavier (the 16s came from a baritone set) that would work, we felt removing one shim was an acceptable compromise. Happily, the 'owner' was satisfied with the resulting reduction in action by approximately 1/64".
I think I speak for all of the current members of the Star Chamber (you know who you are; Hi guys! And gal!) when I say that considering you are a relatively new member, with a low number of posts, if you make haste to replace the shims and then fill out the proper forms we can get the bureaucracy machine rolling and hopefully have a decision in time for you start learning Greensleeves.
That being said...congrats on lowering the action on your Balladeer! My Elite has 3 shims and I find the action to be just fine, considering that I have 12s (or 13s, I can never remember) on it. No fret buzzing (except when I get lazy) but whole step bends are a bite. :D |

Our Carlsbad, NM has bats and wonderful caves, yours just has useless Caleeforneeyas including my oldest son who lives close to that metropolous, and keeps inventing experimental rock songs on garageband.
Flying out of Carlsbad with millions of my cavemates has been a great experience for a night poster.
