MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. - The end has come for the historic Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, where classic records were made by the likes of Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones and Paul Simon.
A local film production company is in the process of purchasing the 30,000-square-foot facility, said Tommy Couch, president of Malaco Music Group, the record label and publishing company that has owned the studio since 1985.
The last recordings were made in December; the studio closed down in January.
Couch said Malaco tried selling the facility as a recording studio for more than a year and a half, but couldn't find a buyer.
The original Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section was composed of guitarist Jimmy Johnson, keyboardist Barry Beckett, drummer Roger Hawkins and bassist David Hood. They opened their studio in 1969, and moved to the current site nine years later.
Couch said the label has not yet decided what will become of the studio's gold and platinum records and other memorabilia. "There's a lot of history there, that's for sure — and nobody likes to see it come to an end," he said.
The production company, Cypress Moon, plans to modify the studio to accommodate a wide array of movie and music projects. Malaco sold its 24-track recording consoles to a separate buyer.
"Our focus will be on film and video production, but we'll be equipped for audio recording," said filmmaker Tonya Holly, the company's president and founder. "You could still cut an album down there." |

Location: Fayetteville, NC | Very Sad news Indeed. Alot of music came out of MUSCLE SHOALS. I remember tha besides the likes of Arethea Franklin, Bob Dlan, Paul Simon, The Osmonds also got their recording start there.
There was this incredible ryhthm section and sound that only came from recordings made there.
You could almost pick them out of a satck of records when hearing them. Some country acts also recorded there to make use of that sound.
Very sad news indeed.Thanks for sharing it cliff. |

| Happy Belated Birthday to you too cliff. I would fit in between you and your bro quite neatly. We coulda been the Osmonds.
I met the Osmonds once - all of 'em, ma & pa included - and they were scary beyond belief. Those poor kids were more obedient than an SS Division. Not for all their money would I have I wanted their lives.
Sad about the Shoals - I read an article over here that said it just wasn't up to standard anymore and needed a new 96-track machine and all of that crap. Has every producer forgotten that the greatest stuff of the last century was recorded on 4 tracks in mono? Technology and image have almost completely replaced talent. I apologise for sending Simon Cowell over there. |

Location: Cherry Hill, NJ | I believe Duane Allman, did work on other artists recordings' at Muscle Shoals. My favotite is "Somebody Loan me a Dime", by Boz Scaggs, circa 1970. One of the best guitar solos of all time, not to mention the kick ass brass section.

Location: Earth·SolarSystem·LocalInterstellarCloud·Local Bub | There was a recent Documentary (last couple of years) done about MSSS. A good one too with footage going way way...way back. It might have been on PBS. With the closing, the film might show up again soon. |
