Location: Midland, MI | Never heard of a '2' chord. But, a 9 is a 2, just an octave higher, so couldn't you play a D9? |

Location: nyc area | any chord labeled"2" or "5" is a triad (3 note) chord with no 3rd... a major triad uses the root 3rd and 5th of the triads major scale.. a 9th chord uses the root,3rd,5th,b7thand 9 (2) of the major scale... a "2" chord would use the root,2nd and 5th notes of the major scale... heres a d2

Location: East Tennessee | D2 would mean add the note 2 steps above D, which would be an E. I'm not sure if you would leave the high E string open or add E on the D string, or both. I guess it would depend on which sounded better in the chord progression you're playing. |

Location: central nj | I use a D2 chord, It is the D chord minus the F# not that is played on the First (high) E string (play it open). Fingering uses only the D (second string 3 fret) and A (third string 2 fret). Strings 4,5 and 6 are played open. I usually grab the D chord and lift my middle finger that would play the F# note. I see it used alot in worship/christian contemporary music. |

Location: Madison, Wisconsin | Thanks to all. I think Matt was the first to explain it. Looks like it's just a D without the F#. L.P.T.R, you correct that I see it in a lot of P&W songs. I've used it for years but never known what it was called. |

Location: Omaha | The '2' chord also sounds good with the root in the base and using the 2nd 3rd and 5th notes of the scale to build the chord, for D2, using Matt's notation:

Here's a fun progression using a D chord, then going to a D2 with a C in the bass (play as an arpeggio):

Then:

...2...

...x...
Of course, this is all in standard tuning; when you get into other tunings, you find lots of '2' chords showing up naturally in arpeggio's played on open strings...but that's another post...

It also sounds good when the thumb reaches around the 12 string neck and covers the "E" on the 2nd fret. D/F# I believe? |
