Hi Club
I've got an older Marantz 2252 reciever, and a pair of Infinity Qb speakers.
Wondering if its possible to play A/E guitar through this type of system, or is it a whole nother animal?

I just put together a similar concept.

get yourself a small mixer (like a Behringer Eurorack) and a DI. Some 1/4" jacks and a 1/4"toRCA adapter. Plug your RCA jacks into your receiver

Guitar -1/4" jack to DI- 1/4"jack to Mixer -RCA Jack to Receiver....

I should say the DI is optional. But if you get a modeling DI (I have the behringer tube ultragain mic200) you can shape the sound and warm it up.

This set up produces a very natural acoustic sound. You can get surprising volume.
