Location: London, England | hi everyone. just wanted to post here after reading for quite a while and never registering, because I only ever had an applause AA-21, but I always wished for an ovation, and so I saved up a bit of money and shelled out on a standard elite lx, which is going to arrive in 2 weeks
I'm very pleased, and from playing the s-elite lx in shops I'm pretty excited and confident that my training on humble guitars such as the applause will pay off on this new beautiful guitar (new england burst colour by the way).
I've played a lot of acoustics guitars, and to be honest, I don't know why, but I just love ovation guitars; their looks, their sound, and I guess pretty much everyone on this board does too :D
So yeah, I really enjoy reading these forums and I just wanted to share my part in our common love. |

All very exciting for a 16 year old me oh my :) |

You'll love the LX I've played that model several times at various dealers and it really plays great.
When you get it be sure and post some photos in the members photo gallery so we can see it too!

The only quibble I have is with your signature... it's not true, and you'll learn it at the expense of other things!!! (in my particular instance, at the expense of a real life...) I remember thinking the same thing when I got a Yamaha acoustic, and a Tele.
I'm afraid that the full family is now 15 strong (well, 13 plus two on the way). I'm really trying to stop, honest!

Dude. My poor ol' Yamaha got sold to a good home (we still talk, but only by arrangement), and all my acoustics are Ovations. It's a hard habit to break!

The guitar arrived at my grandparents house, a week before they take it over here to england, and the colour (COLOR) is black not new england burst. It's pretty in its own right, but i ordered NEB.
Picture up in gallery for those who care.
I'm still going to enjoy it though :) |

I love the LX in black as well as NEB. The black sets off those gorgeous epaulets like no other finish. I have an 1868LX in black as well and my advice is to keep your polishing cloth and a bottle of #65 handy to keep that gloss black finish sparkling! With no fingerprints, it is stunning. With fingerprints -- you know it is loved and being played! Now, go play your LX! :D |

Location: WV | Welcome aboard Joe. As the self appointed leader of the A.A.Y.W.M.M.T.M. (Adults Against Youth With More Money Than Me) group I must ask that you report to the UK Chapter immediately. You may be unaware that being under 21 and owning a guitar such as yours' is in violation of our by-laws. You may be asked to relinquish your Ovation until such time that you reach the age of 21. You will of course be given a loaner guitar, to use in the meantime. If for any reason you fail to comply you will be forced to correspond with Cruster who will innundate you with verbage such as "rochambeau".
(My God am I really this bored?)
Anyway have a good time around here. This forum is a gold mine of information, some of which is actually true. |

I have a 1778-LX-BCB and a Fender Telecaster and live down in Kent.
I have to agree that Black is a great colour, either way you will enjoy this guitar.
You will find that the Ovation factory sting set up is high and I have removed the three shims under the bridge pick-up and it plays so much better. A bit of volume is lost, but otherwise it will be hard going after an 85 Tele.

If you can't bring yourself to return it, the only other option availble to you at time is to purchase another guitar of the same model, except in the -4 finish and send it to the name at the top of the following list:
1) cliff
2) cruster
3) bailey
4) mwoody
After six weeks, the person whose name appears at the top of the list will move their name to the bottom of the list, promoting the remaining names by one place. The guitar will then be shipped to the name at the top of the list. When the guitar reaches the person whose name originally appeared at the top of the list, the guitar will be returned for you and you will be allowed to resume posting on the OFC. It is important to note that you will not be charged for shipping, nor for any normal maintenance (strings, polishing, drool removal after mwoody has it, etc.) during the time of your penance.
Thank you. Carry on.
:D
ps - Welcome! Enjoy your guitar! Oh, and multi hole is better than those silly sound holes. |

A lot of people move on to things like mandolins and worse yet, the mandocello. There's even a percentage of people who start with ukes that wind up with a full blown, living in the gutter, National Resophonic addiction.
Don't be one of those!

Now, when he walks down the street, people saddly shake their heads and refer to him as "Bongo Boy"! |

The sound is stunning, with fantastic deep end sounds, great tone almost woody but unique with clear definition. The action is quite high, but I am going to get used to it, and prefer the tone that I get from high action. Is that my imagination or do you get better tone from higher action?
Well I just love it. |

I recommend using 12s, although 13s will give you a bigger sound. |

| Notes are louder and clearer with a higher action. You just got to find your own compromise.
The lighter the string the easier to compensate for the higher action, but the lighter the string the thinner the sound. Again you just have to try a lot of different combinations over a period of time until you find the best for you. Then the next guitar (which you may not need but you WILL want) you've got a good starting point to work from.
Enjoy. |

The more pressure means that the sound is transmitted to the top from the saddle better, hence better sound. Also higher action means that you can use heavier strings without them rattling against the fret board. Again, more tone.
I use mediums by choice (13's). But Shro's right in that you have to try different things and decide what works best for you. SRV used to use incredibly heavy strings on his Strat and have very high action. Worked for him. But everybody's different. |

I read in a bio one time that Stevie used to glue the four fingers of his left hand to the forearm of his right. After the glue dried he would pull the fingers free taking skin off of the forearm and ...voila! New calluses.

Sounds like you have got a great guitar and are young enough to appreciate your good fortune as opposed to the wretched flotsam of asylum refugees that seem to fluorish here. "rochambeau??" obviously a French term a synonym for "Idon'tknowwhatthehellI'mtalkingabout".
High action usually will give a boost to the acoustic sound, but Ovations are so good when plugged in, I don't see any reason to make your fingers suffer for a little acoustic boost at the expense of better action.
Enjoy that great guitar, the finish will grow on you as you learn it's inner secrets. Just don't let it spoil your ability to ever get along with maybe a future wife.

I am saving up for a fender acoustasonic amp(are they any good?) to finally do my O justice, in its lovely unaltered EQed sound.
I also have my eyes on a marshal acoustic artist 100 watt amp, but I guess I'm a fender fanboy so I'm more leaning down the fender way.
What do you guys think? |
