Location: Le Havre (France) | Yesterday I went to a Parisian music shop which is one of the biggest O's importer in France.
I wanted to test the 2005 Collector's.
The owner told me he didn't have it and will not order this model.
I was surprised of his answer.
He explained me that he thinks this guitar brings nothing really new (except the new design's bowl) compared to other models. He expects the Collector's serie offers a really "plus product" which distinguish it from other series. He conclued on the white color saying it is not a "marketing" color.
I don't want to blame him, I understand its commercial choice (even if I was really disappointed not to play 2005's collector :( ).
But do you think, like he, this 2005 collector has nothing to do in the famous collector's serie ? |

The 2005 Collectors is very much a unique guitar if for now other reason than the bowl design. That design is going to be the design of the future and this is the first one. If that doesn't make it a Collecotr's then I don't know what would.
Ovation went thru a period in the late 1990's and early 2000's where the Collectors just became a different "Top of the Year" model. I know people who have those guitars and love them, but there's nothing "collectible" about them.
When I think of the guitars that Ovation offered as the Collectibles, I think of the first supershallow bowl, the Super Elite, the 16 fret to the body Elite, the unique p/u systems, the parlor guitar, and to this, add the first contoured bowl.
You need to let Ovation know who the dealer is who made these comments. He's not Ovation's friend. He's also not very smart. He's managed to alienate a potential customer, and hopefully, tick off Ovation. |

Afterall he is the one who has to invest in the inventory and hope that it sells. He must have a good feeling that among his clientele this model will not sell well. That's his opinion. BTW, I won't give the name. He told me he had already some remonstrance from Ovation about his choice.
PS : for the head, you're right : his head was not bronzed at all !

Location: boulder | I agree with sleepy bones lee. a good sales person leads a customer to what they want and can afford, a bad sales person forces the customer to buy what the seller wants (well at least from perspective of buyer).
The 2005-es is a great guitar, regardless of collectibility. It is worth its price just for being a great guitar. Add the fact that it is the only guitar in the world with a contour bowl (well I think), in the first year of them being produced, and it IS now a collectible.
For roughly $1400 divided by a lifetime, this guitar is worth buying. Keep trying to find one Dude, you will see/hear/feel what I mean. peace, mike |

he 2003 collector had the first inlaid eps at about 1400 street value. Now all the elite models have this and better electronics for less money. Given this fact, along with the Frg element added to it, is the 2003 really all that collectible? I thought it was a gorgeous guitar, but it's collectible value is questionable. Once all, or most of the models, have the contoured bowls does the 2005 have enough other than the bowl to make it truly that different? It might, but it might not. Time , of course, is always the test of any collectible item.
As far as "telling" on the dealer? Isn't he allowed an opinion? Does every Martin dealer have to love every Martin product? If I were a seller, I wouldn't shoot the horse helping me make a living (especially in front of a potential customer). However, this seller could be playing the old "blast anything I don't carry" in favor of praise everything I have in stock. |

It is a "music shops" street in Paris, near "Pigalle" underground station.
(just on the opposite, an other shop proposed an 1984 Adamas cutaway with single epaulet... and at a very nice price... arghhh ! So nice ! But this guitar has a lot of playing hours behind it...) |

Location: SoCal | I can't predict whether it is collectible, only time will tell. I can tell you that anyone who has played the Adamas I, the 30th Anniv CL, the 1537, the 2001 redwood Collector's, several others, my Martin D25-K2, and the 2005 Collector's at ONE sitting - they love the 2005 Collector's.
Yesterday afternoon, we had two of my wife's friends (and families) down from LA...one of the husbands plays at his church - he may have been "converted" by the 2005. He had the biggest smile on his face when he played it.
Buy it to play it...the factory did a great job. |

Not meaning to argue with you, but the 2003, while a very nice guitar, was in the same league as the redwood collectors, the bubinga top collectors (whatever the hell that was), and all the other collectors guitars that were changed in very minor ways. Kinda like Martin with all their endoree guitars. A lot of fuss and very little difference.
By the way, my apologies to everybody who has these guitars and loves them. I'm not saying that any of the above are bad guitars... just not special enough to call them collectors.
But the 2005 is special simply because of the contoured back. This is the first time Ovation has done something that is going to have a major impact on the entire line of Ovation guitars. This is something new and something special. Not just inlaid epalauts which had no real meaning besides looking cool. If the 2005 doesn't deserve to be a Collectors, then I don't know what will.
Just my opinion. I'd like to see what others have to say. |

I think I'll discuss replacement pole pieces for a left-handed fender mustang (1979) with him for an hour or two before telling him that what I really wanted was a 2005 collectors.

Location: SoCal | wonder how the high number of FRG's issued for the 2003 (at end of the year) will affect the future value. been surmised that this was to allow dealers to sell below MAP and that soft sales were in anticipation of the LX introduction.
Of note, there wasn't a Collector's for 2004.
The 2005 includes the XLR, the LX technology, cutaway, and the new bowl.
Although the 30th Anniv CL had the dual rod and XLR, it was to celibrate the past 30 years (deep bowl, non cutaway), not the future. |
