I have a Balladeer Special with a Cedar Top. For the money I personally think it is a wonderful guitar.
You also have to take into consideration that it is the only one I own at the moment and that makes me a
little biased. ;)

I have tried out the GC771's locally and they are really nice. I am attracted to the deeper tone that comes from the Cedar top.

How would the German's say "It is all Ice cream!" which is to say that there are so many flavors to choose from?

That is a good one.

I have a 2000 S771. The fat v neck is the most comfortable neck I have ever played period. Dark, dark almost ebony rosewood board, dark rich walnut? saddle and neck and a decent top.

It really is an increadable value. I actually smashed the top on this guitar and I liked it so much I paid the $150 to have it repaired. Nice thing about satin...you don't see crack repairs.

It has the old op24+ electronics which to me blow away the higher end optima for tone and versatility. I can get shimmering highs or fat fat lows. Couldn't get that kind of range on an Adamas or a CL with the optimas.

Sadly it seems like Ovation is falling the same fate as other manufacturers. Rosewood boards today often look like they have been sitting out in the sun for ever and someone spilled bleach on them.

The S771's I see today just don't have the visual richness and quality of mine because of their choice of woods and it is only 4 years later. But I see $3k LP's with washed out crappy rosewood boards and visually that looks nasty...got to be the industry.

Enjoy the S771 cause it is a great bang for the buck for what it is though there is no doubt in my mind that the Balladeer LX for only a few dollars more is still a better guitar..but you lose that great v neck but it still ain't bad.

I have owned a S771 for about 1.5 years, this after reading about it here. I bought it used, it is actually 3 or 4 years old.

I use it every Sunday to play in a Catholic Life Teen mass.

I am very happy with the tone, plugged and unplugged, the intonation up and down the neck, the comfort, and the playability.

I also have a nice Takamine 6 string that lately mostly stays in the case. The O S771 is my "go to" guitar.
