Location: NJ | What standard model(s) Ovation has a wide neck?
Somebody on another Board posed the question of a good, utilitarian, "working" guitar.
Somebody (not me) suggested an O, but it was later discounted because the necks are too narrow. Are there any standard models that have a wider neck that I might recommend? |

Location: Scotland | 6774 Folklore, FD14. The 97 collectors had a wide option, none of which are standard current production. The current Country Artist & Folklore are special order only (3 months delivery) according to the Ovation website. While I think not having a wide-neck option in the standard model line up is a miss, the standard neck is exactly that, standard, and comparable with every other manufacturers standard neck width. So it strikes me that whoever suggested Ovation necks are "too narrow" either has a preference for wider necks, or more likely was yet another Ovation-hating snob. Probably a Taylor owner. |

I think that is it without counting the nylon string models.

The celeb (I own) feels narrower than the adamas, but that's because the celeb has a thinner neck profile. Without knowing what they are refering to what's "narrow" to them, for instance do they have measurements?) it's hard to come up with what they're talking about. |

| This underlines the what seem to me to be big gaps in the stock line. The Folklore should simply be a stock line. And the fact that I'm having to pay upcharges on a Country Artist with a radiussed board seems silly to me as well - I found 3 equivalent models from other makers (including Martin) which are stock lines. Even in the UK iwas told I could have ther Martin in 3-4 weeks. I suppose you gotta figure that marketing say we don't sell enough but I'm sure someone's missing out here. |

The Custom Balladeer, with the traditional "X" top brace, could be a good candidate for a 14 fret, 1 3/4" nut width option and solid or slotted headstock.
Most of these options; like the wider neck, appeal to more traditional players that don't want cutaways or fancy inlays, just a good playing ax that is available with these features without being a special order only model that takes 3 months to get and that you can not play before you order it.
The descriptions of the different models and styles, tones and looks that came in the old mid 70's silver catalog "The guitars of the stars" is in my humble opinion, what was the best marketing for Ovation guitars.
Simple description of each model, specs, measurements and look is what most people went by, knowing the kind of tone and specs they needed for their own style.
To me, when there were: the Adamas line, the traditional models as the main Ovations, and the Applause line as the economy line that LOOKED TOTALLY DIFFERENT THAN THE REAL OVATIONS, is what was the logical thing.
I saw a Celebrity Elite style in a store that looked exactly like an Elite, and sounded like crap, unfortunately that is what most stores carry and what most players know as an Ovation, bad marketing IMHO.

Location: Earth·SolarSystem·LocalInterstellarCloud·Local Bub | I own a 6774 and bought it because it was a wide neck steel 6 string. It's a good guitar. But if a 1 3/4" neck and deep (contour) bowl were available...Whoa. |
