Just picked a CD by a band called Blue Merle.
Bunch of young guys from (I believe) Univ. of VA.
Good stuff!
The instrumentation is predominantly acoustic guitar, mandolin, bass, drums, keys, etc., but it doesn't have that in-bred "twang" to it.
They sound like a combination of Coldplay and Dave Matthews (with the annoying factors of both bands removed). In fact, I think I saw on their website that they're supporting the DMB Tour later this season. Worth checking out.

Gotta love new music. And then there was the French band Blue Merde.

Yeah, I remember them.
They did a remake of that CheapTrick tune . .
. . "Surrender".

Went to the website and gave them a listen. Pretty good. Reminds me a little of Hum's album, Downward Is Heavenward. A lot less metally though.

Great fresh sound.....I like! Thanks for the link cliff! While I was listening to one of the tracks (forget which one) my son stuck his head in the room and asked "who's that Dave Matthews?" so your desription of their sound is pretty close!

Sound a lot like Coldplay - which could make a lot of money! Absolutely crap drummer - so many bands are ruined by the idiot at the back hammering nails on the snare drum - do these people not know how a ride cymbal got its name? There are more untalented drummers in the world than any other instrument the Good Lord ever invented. Count to youself how many great guitar players there are in the history of rock and then count how many great drummers there are. Sad.

Even allowing for the above - these guys are REALLY good. Reminds me of Tracy Chapman - SWMBO adores Ms Chapman and I spend endless hours in the car thinking "these are great songs - please somebody shoot the drummer." I guess it's just me.

When they put the band together, the drummer must've owned the P.A. system . . . . been there, done that . .

I actually played in a band once where the drummer not only owned the PA and the van, but also owned a 3 pick up SG which he used to let me borrow. It took us over 2 years to sack him - his mum used to let us practice in the living room and then cook us food afterwards. Oh to be a teenager again.

I actually worked for "the drummer" in a band for a while as the sound guy. He not only owned the PA and Van but also seemed to get all the gigs. We were really stuck.

Has anyone seen one of those "boxes" being played that the drummer sits on. Really nice sounds and very mellow.

Have you guys seen the film "Bandwagon"? Great indie film about the trials, tribulations and motivations of writing and performing your music. Given this thread, you'll love it. Terrific film with a great soundtrack. Came out about 6-7 years ago. JoeBobbo sez "check it out".

Well, if you ain't got talent you'd better bring something else to the party...the PA, the garage, the mum who cooks everybody dinner...

Anybody need a ride???

while we are on good bands from VA...Check out Scott Miller & The Commonwealth . Superb live performer...formerly of the V-Roys.

I only just realised - Bongo Boy = drummer who can't afford a kit. You have got a couple of guitars you could let me play, so you're in.

Wasn't Bocephus the even stranger big brother/uncle (they keep it in the family) in Deliverance?
