Location: Texas | It has been awhile since we OFCers have shared what's playing on our CD players.
The last few days on mine:
Robert Johnson: "The Gold Collection - 40 Classic Performances", ...I love RJ.
John McLaughlin - "The Best of Shakti", ...the original band, my favorite Shakti configuration, with John playing acoustic guitar and with L. Shankar on violin. Awesome.
Eric Clapton - "Sessions for Robert J" , ...very well done, and I am enjoying the DVD very much.
New Grass Revival - "Too late to turn back now", ...old 70's performance live in Telluride, one of my favorite bands of all time, great!
And I am relearning all my parts from my old CDs for the Lara & Reyes reunion concerts. A lot of work!

Yesterday I got the disc from when BrianT and I played an open mic. Two versions of each song. One just as it sounded that night an another with some studio "tweeks". Warts and all, I'm pretty happy with it. If you want to hear BrianT nail "heart of gold", I'll e-mail the mp3.
Also...My live Who disc from the Detroit show in 2000.
Also...Unabridged "Lord Of The Rings" |

This one is good, but listen to it and remember that it's a "studio" album... still worth it IMHO....Jerry really shines on this one! |

I'm not sure who's the better soul singer - McDonald or (another of my faves) Marvin Gaye. Love the new AKUS too. And just last week I fell in love with some classic Ray Charles all over again. Can't help it - I just love it all. |

The now late sons of Arthur Big Boy Crudup ("That's Alright Mama", Elvis' entry number) with such greats as Lonnie Mack, Tim Drummond and Fingers Taylor as sidemen. James Crudup died during the recording of this one. Jonas and George both died within a year. Fitting tribute to Big Boy. My friend Vic Peppler did the final mix on it. Its a mix of tributes and new material, as well some of it quite good songs that fit, such as "Fur Slippers" (written by Bob Dylan). |

On that concert, Larry C. was playing a Custom Legend but John Mc. was playing a Custom Balladeer, and kicking the $%?t out of Larry, I must say.

| Larry was totally outclassed - noticeable that "Between two Seas" was played at half speed. He tried hard - he knew he shouldn't have been there as well as the other 2 knew it.
I have read in several places that Larry walked into a NY after hours jam session in the late 60s where John McLaughlin was sitting in (Larry was a major star of the jazz scene at the time) and after 30 seconds turned to his wife and said "That is the greatest guitarist I ever heard in my life".
He tried hard.
Sorry I didn't recognise the 2 guitars correctly - it's just a joy to watch 2 Ovations like that.
To be fair to Larry - there are several moments in the concert where Paco looks at John with sheer disbelief and a shake of the head.
I used to think that JM was the greatest non-classical guitar player who ever lived. I went to see one of the world's greatest classical players in concert last weekend and I become ever more convinced that he is simply the best ever bar none. |

Location: Minden, Nebraska | I have listened to McLaughlin and Carlton for decades, and they are apples and oranges guitar players in my opinion. Few guitarists can match John's chops and command of the fretboard. But few can match Larry's taste and tone. I can play most of what Larry Carlton can play, but a) it doesn't sound as good, and b) I never would have thought of the phrasing much of the time.
I don't think LC is one of the greatest guitarists in general, but I find him one of the most enjoyable -- for my taste. |

Carlton is great, no doubt about it.
And I have seen Coryell play very nice and tasteful stuff, but on that particular concert, he was "under something" and his playing really suffered.

| Have been working out a pretty cool song list and to add to the array of 70's & 80's rock classics, including some Yes, that no one and I mean no one plays anymore.........
I have been going through the LED Zepplin 4 CD set I just bought! Looks Like "No Quarter" & "Ten Year's Gone", two of my favorites!, are on the list! These I can sing great. Bob was easy on the high notes for these songs.
Also after 2 or 3 from Peter Gabriels "SO" album
and I would like to pull off "Back In New York City" and/or "Lilly White Lillith" From early Genesis! "The Lamb Lies Down" !!!!!!! Great stuff here. Been going over and over these CD's last few weeks. Having a complete blast with this older Rock! Great, Great, stuff that is becoming forgotten Music! I have a feeling we will have so much fun playing this stuff people will feel it we will get a name and do quite well with this old stuff!
Nooooobody else plays this stuff! And none of us are in this band for the money so it's perfect!
