Location: SE Michigan | Every once in a while when I think about all the really dumb things I have done, I am reminded how incredibly stupid some people can be, and I feel a little better. Check out this article:
http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/04/22/stolen.violin.ap/index.html
OK, I am glad that the artist got her $850,000 violin returned, but I have to ask, who would leave a $850,000 ANYTHING laying on the front seat of a car? I wouldnt leave the house with a $850,000 anything unless accompanied by a armed body gaurd.
And if that wasnt stupid enough, it was a borrowed violin. WHO LOANS A $850,000 violin to a 20 year old?
And still I wonder, OK, so you are a complete idiot and you leave a $850,000 violin in your car, did you have to leave it right on the seat in plain site? You could'nt have covered it up with a newspaper or something? Are violins like guitars vulnerable to heat damage?
Sometimes I think there should be a a Special Federal Prosecuter who levy's a special "FLAGRANT IDIOT" fine against people like this, or the guy who left the Martin HD-28 by the bon-fire, or the parents who let their kids sleep over with Michael Jackson. If nothing else it would be entertaining. |

Second, sometimes the best place to hide something is in plain sight but you still need to be smart about that, (like under a newspaper and lock the door) |

Location: SE Michigan | Oh, I almost forgot, the Special Federal Idiot Prosecutor needs to give a special triple fine to the idiot thief who stole the thing in the first place then just dumped it in an alley. Why did he steal it if he was just going to dump it?
Did he not realize it was a violin when he took it? Did he decide it was too nice? Or maybe he thought it was worthless?
Sometimes I think there are special chemicals in the air or water out there on the left coast. |

kind of like loaning a guitar to a "friend"; better to sell it with an agreement to buy it back at same price. they damage or lose it, you've at least been paid. |

Location: NJ | well let's see it was about 84 or 85 and I had a gig at the local college watering hole. we played there monthly and were considered the house band. One night after the gig I got home and unloaded my truck of equipment into the living room of my parent's house. If you have read about Camden Nj then you know it was the ghetto. I guess maybe it was a pay plus drinks gig and we ALWAYS made sure we killed em in drinks so I guess I was a little toasty.
I put the gear in the house turned on the tv and passed out. woke up the next morning in front of the tv and looked at the gear I had to put away and realized my guitar was not there. Where was it? sitting in the back of my pickup? At the bar? well it was on my front steps. When I opened the door and found it I was truely amazed. I was sure it was gone.
so it was not 850K but absolutely worth 850. |

Location: Nova Scotia, Canada | About five years ago, I, along with a group of musician buddies, played a benefit dance in a nearby town for the ill father of a friend. I had my 1953 Tele out to the gig.
Although normally I would never do this, I agreed to stop into another local watering hole for a beer before going home. After about 20 minutes, we left to go home and when I stepped outside the bar I noticed the dome light on in my van and someone running up the street.
I ran toward the van in a panic thinking my old Tele had just been abducted. When I pulled open the door, I was relieved to find they had taken the 8-pack of beer that was sitting in a bag on top of the 1954 Strat case housing the Tele, but that was the only thing missing!
They must have figured that ratty old guitar case wasn't worth lugging up the street!

Location: WV | You guys are being way to hard on the poor gal. I don't know about you but I often take expensive guitars, along with all my other priceless items, grocery shopping with me. Why if I left them home someone might break in and steal them.
BTW Jeff-I'll take one of those signs :D |

I know better than to leave guitars in the car unattended, but this was just a spare case and I'd forgotten about it for a few days. I would have loved to see that idiot's face when he got home, opened the case and realized it was empty! |

HELLOOO??
I thought we were a little more aware of the circus of life than most, what was Barnum's motto, There is one born every minute.
How can a classical violinist get publicity?
By playing classical music? NOOOOO
By playing an $850,000 violin? YESSS
By having an $850,000 violin stolen? Absolute and complete media saturation!!!!
Recovering the $850,000 violin? What a GREAT MEDIA feeling, resonating from LA to New York City, and it was FREEE!!!!
I saw the lady playing the violin, but I am a violin fan, does anybody here remember seeing her playing the violin??
Or is the theft all you remember??
Think about it, or don't.

Location: SE Michigan | I thought of one potential negative side effect to all this publicity. If I were a desperate criminal, I would hang around outside a concert hall and mug a virtuoso. Cant imagine they would put up much of a fight, and with the potential of them carrying around a $850,000 violin, there is a huge upside for the risk taken. Certainly some of the criminal element in our country must be taking notice. |
