Location: atlanta | Kaki recently made four appearances on the half-hour NBC late-night program Last Call with Carson Daly. On March 23, 2005 she appeared as the "musical guest" closing the show. She played her Adamas II acoustic guitar and performed the song "Magazine" from her second CD.
Carson Daly invited her to return in early May to appear as his "house band" for three shows. The house band plays to introduce the show, as well as before and after commercial breaks, and to introduce the guests. Just like Leno and Letterman, Carson also interacts with the leader of the band, in this case Kaki.
The show's Music Director wanted electric guitars, so she played her Gretsch baritone and Electromatic lap steel, her vintage ES-175 and a borrowed Telecaster. She was accompanied by a drummer friend of hers from Brooklyn.
A friend of mine downloaded the shows from his TiVo and burned them onto high quality audio/visual DVDs.
I have edited the four shows down to a single DVD+R of 35 minutes. I took out all the commercials, drastically shortened the guest interviews, and took out some superfluous stuff that Carson did. I'm prejudiced of course, but imho it rocks.
The shows are in reverse order--that means the last show (May 6) is first on the disk. The shows are in the following order:
1) May 6... Kaki does all the music for the show
2) May 5... Kaki is the house band. The musical guest is the group Erasure.
3) May 4... Kaki is the house band. The musical guest is Ben Folds.
4) March 23... Kaki is the musical guest. She plays the song "Magazine".
I plan on sending one to everyone who got the first DVD of her on the Letterman and Conan shows. Anyone else is welcome to email me and I'll send them the 2d DVD, no charge, no strings attached.
She had hoped to make it to the Factory Tour, but instead got booked to tour with Eric Johnson that week. Maybe she and I can make it next year.
Finest regards to everybody--
Dave King

Bill, you're right--this should be a fun tour (and professional challenge) for her. HOB is giving them "equal" billing:

It's so dang HOT in south Louisiana right now that the sweltering heat cracked the windshield from top to bottom on my hotshot truck! Stuff like this seriously delays my GAS purchase of a 6758 EliteT! Sigh... |

NBC gave the shows a rating of PG 14, and I really can't argue with that.
I would suggest that anyone concerned about this issue give the disk a preview before deciding on its suitability for younger children.

Thanks for the first DVD, and thanks in advance for the second DVD!
Our local NBC affiliate does not air the Carson Daley show. So even with TIVO I could not catch the shows with Kaki.

Just want to say how lucky Kaki is to have a Dad that is SO supportive. Keep up the good work, she has become a genuine star. I, as a parent, have to give you some of the credit as it means a lot. My parents hated my brother's and my music and we resented it, and I have tried to be different with my kids, you have succeeded.

Another winner; thank you so very much -- again.
I have been a fan of Eric Johnson for years and think a jam between Kaki and Eric could be astonishingly good.
We admire your commitment to your daughter along with admiring the evidence of good parenting! |

I'll order some music from US soon and hope to find her CD's from the same place where the others. I would be interested to read the ideas or emotions behind the music if it's somewhere to be read. I admire that she can make so unique music, that's real art.

Got the DVD over the weekend. Thanks Dave! Kaki seemed very comfortable in the band/sidekick role. And the playing was outstanding as usual! I'm really looking forward to watching Kaki grow as an artist in the coming years. She is already a special and unique talent.
She really needs to come to central Florida one of these days!
