| I tried out half a dozen Ovations in our local store, and fell in love with the Celebrity CC024 shallow bowl with quilted maple finish. I went back again today to have another try before parting with my cash and was surprised at how high the action seemed on this second visit, no real chance for easy string bends like I'm used to on my ancient Ibanez acoustic...
What I want to know is, is that a string type issue. With light strings (011/012) would I be okay for bends and stuff without losing the great tone?
Thanks for your help on this. |

| But, where's the compromise point? Tone vs bendability? |

. . . now that I've made a that assinine statement, lemme ask . . . .
. . . . do Celebs HAVE shims?? |

If you are playing acoustically it's what is acceptable to your ear. I personally like the power and tone of medium gage (13s), I can't hardly tolerate the sound of lighter strings. Bending the mediums is not difficult for me, but that's because I play nothing else.
You should consider lowering the set-up with the current strings, though that will also effect the tone, because you are softening the break angle of the strings over the saddle.
You should just experiment with finding a balance between tone and playability |

He also kills a bear most days before breakfast.
Start light and go up - and welcome to the club. |

| How typically American. Not only are your bears the biggest and the meanest they can talk as well. |

| Okay...good advice. So, I should go with the CC024 and just choose lighter strings/remove shims to get that movement. Isn't there an issue with taking all the strings off a guitar at once though to make that adjustment. I was always advised not to do that. |

| Okay. So, I'm going to be happy with a CC024 - is that the consensus, they do a lovely black model... |

If it is then pull the shims and lighten the strangs, all at once and play alot and add a verse to the my fingers are sore post. |

You've evidently played it. A couple of times.
Are YOU happy with it??
There's only one "concensus" that MATTERS - Yours.
Personally, I'd search out a USA model (even used), but that's just me. T'me, the Celebrities just don't feel/sound the same, but there are others here who love 'em . . . to each his own.
My advice (fwiw): Go back and spend a considerable amount of time with it. Does the guitar "speak" to you? D'ya think that (after you've yanked a shim) it'll be a natural extension of you??
If so,. . . buy it. If not, . . . walk away.
g'luck. |

g'luck. That's exactly what I do. Even though I'm not that experienced of player. If it just doesn't sound and feel right, I just chalk it up to experience, and move on.
I figure I'll find the "right" one. Just takes time. :D |

I've heard this is cliff's attitude to women as well. |

| Got slightly off-message here didn't we fellas?
Maybe that's par for the course.
Anyway, I tried the CC024 again and came ful circle to my original gut feeling about it, that's it's very, very nice to play, and sounds far better than any of the others I tried in the shop. It's 250 quid online (as opposed to 350 in the shop)and I just got a Google AdSense cheque for my website that will cover that, so I'm going for it! Thanks for all the advice. |
