I know it's pretty common for that thick top finish on older O's to crack (sometimes spectacularly) but I was wondering about the current models.
Do they use something different now. On the factory tour DVD Rick mentions the fact that the finish they're using on the tops is very thin.
Anyone know ?

I have not seen finish cracks on many current models. the change to the thinner finish seemed to have cured the crack problem.

I agree with Al....I look in the used guitar shops locally and I haven't seen any newer ones with finish cracks (from the last 10 years or so).

Yes it's a different finish and it is thinner. (And better, and better is better) It would probably still crack given the right conditions but it's much more rare now than before.

Why did they make the finish so thick on the earlier models?

Maybe so they would not need a pick guard?
