Folks, I need your help. My sister is going to be maried in Sep. Im the family musician and I have to play at the small party after the official stuff at the registry office.

So what are you favorite wedding songs? Im alone just with my ovation and a blues harp.

My personal favorite is "Wedding Song / There Is Love" by Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul, and Mary.

"I Will Be Here" by Steven Curtis Chapman
"I'll Always Be Right There" by Bryan Adams
"There Is Love" Paul Stookey

These are great acoustical wedding songs. I played "There is Love" at my sister's wedding, "I Will Be Here" at a good friends wedding, and will be doing Bryan Adam's "I'll Always be Right There" Aug 6th at my daughter's wedding.

All great songs!

Norse(I suggest a six [classical if you have it] for the Bryan Adam's song, and a 12 string for the other two...fun songs to play as well!)man1

"Run Like Hell" that would be a good one and also some pretty good advice for your sister!

You could try "Can't Help Falling In Love" by Elvis. Especially effective on ukulele (hey, it got me laid on my anniversary)!

How could it get you laid on your birthday when you were in the Netherlands and your wife was in AZ? Aw forget it. I don't think I want to know.

How about Glen Campbell's How Come Every Time I Itch I Wind Up Scratching You?

Seriously, Clint Black's Something That We Do.

My brother was actually in a wedding where the song was "Pancho and Lefty".

All the federales say
We could have had him any day
Only let him slip away
Out of kindness I suppose

I love the song, but I expect that the mother of the bride would never forgive you.

Start with a little "Cannon in D", in G of course. This is agood finger picking - change tempo and style as the guests are seated and they try to locate the Groom. D-A-Bm-F#m-G-D-G-A repeat.

"I will be here" is great. "There is Love may have been overdone. Try something by KISS!

Whatever song you do .... YOU MUST LOUNGE-A-FY IT!
It's an unwritten rule that when you play at a wedding you have make it sound like you're a regular at the Rainbow Room of the Holiday Inn Express ...
Enjoy and have fun!
Here are some songs that have not been mentioned:
Long and Winding Road
A bootle of red - joel
it's raining men
ymca
locomotion
electric slide
roll out the barrel
Hokey Pokey

My god it's just horrible but the people seem to enjoy them.

And remember you and your band are not the stars. And don't let family members sing, anyone who does forgets that today they are not the center of attention. Even if they have a good voice ... Stop them! The thoughtful members of the wedding party will thank you.

Annie's Song, John Denver
I have to say I love you in a song, Jim Croce
Time in a bottle, Jim Croce..

Also the song from Fiddler on the roof...

Some of the cuts I've been asked to play at weddings include The Wedding Song (Paul Stookey), When You Say Nothing At All (AKUS), a few by Richard Marx, Love Will Keep Us Alive (The Eagles) If (Bread) and, believe it or not, Slip Sliding Away (S&G).

Good luck.

The KISS suggestion was a good one, if the bride's name is Beth... or Christine and she's 16. Or something from Love Gun if it's a shotgun wedding. Or "Tears Are Falling" if there's a lot of crying.

"Used to Love Her" by GN'R?

(maybe not)

Perhaps:
"I Need You" • America
"Longer" • Dan Fogelberg

Actually, many times I've gotten the request to play at the weddings of friends. Most every time that I had the freedom to choose the song, I ended up with a last minute inspiration for an original song! Each one was VERY well received, and songs are actually among the strongest songs I've written (most written on the fly the night before!). I often still occassionally squeeze one or two in at gigs.

If you have the courage and some writing ability, I'd say give it a shot. That way your performance becomes a personalized gift as well as entertainment. Some of the couples danced alone on the floor as I played, and it was something they seem to specifically remember about that day.

My wife remembers us dancing alone at our wedding. In fact she brings it up every 12 months at the very least. 24 years as of last week, and believe me it has become one of my strongest memories as well. Despite my best efforts.

Try these:

Love -- John Lennon
Woman -- John Lennon
I Will Be Here -- Steven Curtis Chapman
I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song -- Jim Croce
Time In A Bottle -- Jim Croce
The Way You Look Tonight -- Tony Bennett

Just my 2 cents ...

Wedding Song is a classic, but overdone. Do it with C, G, F and Am, capoed at 3rd fret. I'll have to say by Croce would be good as would Time In a Bottle. I really like a song by Joshua Kadison that I forgot the name of, but it's written for piano. I did Beautiful by Gordon Lightfoot at ours, along with the Wedding Song, but that was a long time ago.

Words to live by. She wants a new patio cover, use it as an excuse to get a new guitar. She wants granite counter tops, use it as an excuse to get a new guitar. She doesn't want sex, use it as an excuse to get a new guitar.

Repeat as needed.

At my wedding reception, the band decided to play a Beatles song for the bride & groom opening dance. Imagine the singer crooning ... "yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away, now it looks as though they're here to stay, oh I beleive in yesterday". lady stonebobbo and I laughed all the way through.

If you know a chick to pull off a duet with, "From This Moment On" by Shania Twain is a great choice that you don't hear too often. Also, a not-necessarily-duet tune that is kinda new and excellent for weddings is "You Raise Me Up" by Josh Groban.

Ran across a guy locally who wrote a tune that's a true romantic ballad called "When I'm Old" and the tag line is "I hope that you'll still love me when I'm old". I'm working on it to sing to my wife.

Hey, we haven't been married 24 years yet so I'm not working on "Beat It" (or should that be "Beat the Boy's") yet.

24 years is probably much longer than the norm, but we've got you by 4. This thread reminded me of one of our wonderful trips together, driving from Idaho to Salina, Kansas in a Ford Fiesta for my wife's sister's wedding. I was still trying to learn the Wedding Song on my 76 Ovation while my wife drove. Not much room in a Fiesta even if you aren't trying to play a guitar. I think that's the same trip we lost a fan belt and I got the verses mixed up on the Wedding Song. The sheet music is really hard to follow.
Wonderful memories. That wedding just led to divorce, like most of them. I doubt there's any correlation between the quality of the wedding music and the quality of the marriage, so just throw something together.

Hey, I remember that one!

Put another log on the fire,
Cook me up some bacon and some beans.
Go out to the car, jack it up and change the tire.
Mend my socks and sew my old blue jeans.

Come on, babe!
You can fill my pipe, and then go fetch my slippers.
Boil me up another pot of tea.
Put another log on the fire, babe,
Then come tell me why you're leaving me.

...

Had to have been around '76?

Well, cholloway stole my thunder, but along with "Put Another Log on the Fire" you can throw in "She's a Good Hearted Woman (in Love With a Good-Timin' Man) by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. You won't be able to stop everyone from singing on the chorus to that one (kinda like "You Picked a Fine Time To Leave Me, Lucille"...oh well...).

Or you could do SOMETHING serious...

...like "Something" by George Harrison...

Every Woman- Dave Mason

"You are every woman in the world to me . . ."

Easy to play and sounds great on a 12 string.

Dave- I liked your suggestion too.
