Location: Colorado | No rolling on the floor laughing here - I'm new to the site. I have a 1687-8 slotted head that I purchased used in 1985 from a music store in Atlanta. They said it was one of the original 34 prototypes - the one Nancy Wilson was given. I don't know too much about these. It has a banged up slotted head stock - and the original nutt had been recut to narrow the width of the strings. A few years later I sent it back to the factory to put in an OP-24 - the old wood 2-knob stereo system sounded bad. They had to cut access into the back - to do it - but did a nice job - they also reworked the bowl. It came back with a new ID tag inside - designated as 1687-8 # blank. No more old tag! The tag is hand signed by Charles Kaman II. It is still a workhorse of a guitar for me and sounds great. I'd have to dig a little to come up with the receipts and the hand written story of the guitar. The story said it had passed through a band called The Goads. Any suggestions from anyone as to how I can get the story confirmed, and the guitar credentialed..certified? Anyone got good old-time contacts with Ovation? It's a great guitar with a great history, and I look forward to sharing more with this club. |

You must post pictures ! There are many here that would love to have a look.
There are a number of slothead owners on this page who know alot more about your guitar than I and if it's an original slothead it shouldn't be difficult to get it "credentialed" |

Location: Atlanta,Ga. | I spoke about a year ago to a music promoter who knows Nancy Wilson and has visited her home many times. He ashured me she still had the guitar because i asked about it.He specifically remembers it and several other of her early guitars..He is also the one that sent me the autographed picture of Paul McCartney and wings holding the slothead adamas i have.. Here is a similar pic he took but its not autographed.
Many of the early adamas guitars had the serial number written on the bracing of the top.The one "elginacres" has may have the original serial number on the braces .A flashlight and mirror may give some answers..

Is it possible Ovation still has a record of your repairs, maybe they recorded the original serial number?
When I am back in boulder, maybe stephen, you and I could hold a colorado get together. peace, mike |

Location: Colorado | OK - I'm not making promises here - this is what I know - I'll post pics as soon as I find my camera. I bought it in 1985ish from American Musical in Atlanta - they actually had to ship it to me in Tucson. Written on a legal pad was the description, that Nancy had owned it - it had ended up with a band called the Goads. I played it for a while, then from South Carolina had them update the electronics to an OP-24. They had to do extensive bowl work to get the electronics in. Prior to my owning it, both the nutt and the bridge had been recut to narrow some of the distnces between the strings. I've got pretty big hands, so I had them redo them back to typical distances. Since they had to cut an access hole in the back of the bowl, they redid the finish of the bowl. They had it so long, I argued about the price, and they did all the work for nominal charges. I remember it having a serial number, but what - I don't know. When it returned - they had put in a new one labeled 1687-8 with the # left blank. It is hand signed by what looks like CHKaman II. I've been playing it all along - no complaints - and a great tone it has. If it isn't hers - I'm not disappointed - but judging by the wear on the slotted head, and the wear on the fingerboard, coupled with how the nut and bridge used to be cut - it could be. If she still has hers, I wonder which one this may be. I'll post this message under the general posts as well. Thanks for the info so-far folks. I copied this message in the nancy wilson thread too |

First, welcome to the board. YOu'll like it here and learn quite a bit. It'll be interesting to see if the history of your guitar can be determined. Great guitar, regardless.
Who did you deal with in customer service? The two mainstays are John Budny and Kim Keller. But I also know that there were others along the line. The names I can think of are John Basso and Nancy Heacock.
Also, when was the work done on your guitar. You had an OP24 put in which means that it was sometime between 1985-1995 (roughly). If you have your service order and receipt, they might have info as well.
Is it possible that Nancy Wilson had two slotheads, with one coming from the factory and one coming from a music store or another party later? |

I am in ct. until i have enough money to leave, sometime in august/september. we are down to 65% humidity today. that's as low as i've seen it here.
Maybe we could plan a thanksgiving week OFC jam. or find out when the Hamer tour will be in/near denver and crash their party. (The 2005 tour turned me on 100% to Hamer guitars.) Can I just start the rumour now, "Big Party at elginacres house!" ??? ;) peace mike |

Location: Colorado | Well my house is pretty good sized. Party it is. The guitar is a mystery. On the top bracing - the number #17 appears - on the other side of the top bracing #17 appears again, as well as the number 3, and something is also written behind the pickup wire - which to this point - I have not cut to be able to see what was written. Anybody know anything about numbers written on the bracing. You know 27 plus 17 is 44 - which is the number of the guitar Nancy Got ....ooo.. mystery. Did they number the ones prior to 27? IF so - who got those instruments. As you can see when it comes to guitars - I just play them - I typically do not research them. |

These are undoubtedly the Holy Grail's for us Ovationites. And some of these guy's could write a book themselves concerning these interesting guitars. And Samova keep those photo's coming I/we Love to see these guitars in the hands of famous musicians.

Location: 6 String Ranch | OK, I got his pics. It's the real deal. Gold inlays. I would guess it could be #39, 40, or 42. Sam, you still got 43? and assuming Nancy still has 44 and Colin has 45 and Ole Hector has 41.
There were 11 of these made.
My guess on the brace numbers is that the braces were numbered and weighed. What you're looking at is the #3 brace and it was 17 grams. There were 9 plus the bridge brace and they were done in pairs, two 1s, two 2s, etc.
Guitar looks to be in pretty good shape.
Too bad about adding the preamp and having to cut a door in it, even though it is a better preamp.
Put that mirror in and see if there is a number on the outside of the outside braces. If not there maybe the bridge brace.
Nonoriginal lable and that dodgey signature deffinately lowers the value!
I would guess this rework was done sometime between 85 and 90. John B doesn't recall this offhand but will check. Don't hold your breath, this was quite some time ago. |

Location: Colorado | I was making my living with the instrument - it was a real workhorse for me and still is. Therefore, I made the decision to bring it more up-to-date - electronically. I know it is kind of like classic cars - some want only factory original parts - so it stays vintage. But you seldom get to drive the car. This guitar has been played everyday - for at least a couple hours - and has never failed me since I had the modifications done - that surpasses 20 years now. Prior to that, it was failing quite often, and the stereo image of the guitar was what I called weird at best. That being said - it is the best "live" sounding guitar I have ever played - which for me is a bit unique for Ovations. I've always loved the sound of roundbacks plugged in - but this one sings purely - either plugged or unplugged. When I bought it in Atlanta - the uniquesness of the guitar was described to me, but I bought it for its playability and its sound - the rest was window dressing or gravy. It has a real rich deep sound. I assume I'll learn over time the real history of this instrument. I'd love to know it for sure. I guess that someday between CWK2, Samova, and others, we'll figure the truth out. Mqaybe Nacy W. can help. If some knows her and could get her to chime in if she still has hes - that would eliminate at least one from the fold. If she does not have hers - the plot thickens. It's weird seeing my guiatr posted all over the web now - including the site in France - wow - I've got acelebrity next to me - oops - nope - an Adamas Slothead. BTW - I still am a huge fan of Glen Campbell. On television he introduced me to Ovations, and I clearly remember opn his later show him playing his Elite. |

Moody, what I meant was that it was a real slot head and not some other guitar and not a prank-wank post. The mention of a slothead and most of us get pretty far down the road of "Oh God, Oh God, lemme see it, lemme see it, what number isit, Oh God, Oh God" before we really get all the details about it. I of course, don't do this, but it has taken twenty years of training. However I must confess to a full wood upon finding #35 in the dead storage part of the basement several years ago. I thought it was long gone. |

This website has given me so much info on slotheads that I didn't know before (like almost everything!). I knew they had exististed, I had seen one once in person (in a display case), and several pictures. That was it. Now, I've played them, hope to own a recreation of one, and have seen Bill casually tuning 4 of them, one at a time at the factory.
Is this a great place or what? |

By any chance have you had the truss rod cover off on that guitar, and if so, does it have a number underneath?
Even though mine is #53, for some unexplainable reason, the TRC (and the rod "cavity") are both numbered "20". It's been speculated that it might have something t'do with keeping the components "married" during carving process (see "detailed" pic below). So far, mine seems to be the only one numbered in this fashion . . .
THANKS for posting the detailed pix of the numbered braces . . . .
Gives me an idea of where possible ID #'s MAY be on mine (once I get a "scope" t'get IN there with) . . . .

I'm almost wondering that MAYBE since the TRC's were hand-cut and fitted to the necks, that maybe they were numbered to ensure the proper, individual fit.
e.g:
TRC #20 is cut/shaped. It's then laid on top of the headstock in position. The shape is traced and then the "recess" for the TRC is cut into the headstock.
It would also make sense to ensure that the screw hole aligns properly with the receptacle affixed to the back of the TRC for each guitar.
It'd be interesting to see if they're interchangeable . . . .
btw:
Have I f@cking obsessed on this ENOUGH, yet??? |

Cliff, is it similiar to the sound of #47 and do you believe the reissues will be close in sound?
Also, how is that cubase production coming along? |

(there's only a slight difference in the "resonant frequency" of each - #47=99, #54=95). We never had the opportunity to A/B 'em side-by-side - shoulda' done that. Naturally, I'm a little "biased" ;)
As for the re-issues . . . I can't comment, cause I haven't seen/played one. I can attest though that these guys're committed t'get as close as humanly possible . . .
Cubase: work, gigs, and home chores are not affording me the time to delve into it, yet.
That and the fact that the ThreeHundredSixtySomething pages of documentation only come in a .pdf document is a bit of a Painus in the Anus . . . . |

Location: 6 String Ranch | There's a B&B in Fernandina called the Florida House. Everyone should stay there. It's music friendly except for the owner who plays a banjo. |

That's a fifferent Florida House than the one in Fernandina, quite a bit nicer too. The one in Fernandina Beach has mopeds the guests can rent to terrorize the other tourists downtown. |
