| Ernie, I purchased a 1117 sunburst a couple weeks ago, and it is in near new condition, also. No fret wear that I can see, and sounds great. Paid $250.00 for it plus shipping, 1985 vintage. Let us know how yours sounds when it arrives.

Location: Rocky River, Ohio | mike, my 1117-4 just arrived...i asked the gentleman to ship it on monday so it wouldn't have to sit in a fedex warehouse all weekend....absolutely wonderful guitar...a true time capsule...it's a 2000 model that must have been literally purchased and then stored in the case. it still had adamas 1818s on it, all the tags, unregistered warranty card and all paperwork.
there is absolutely zero use on it, not a mark.
it plays perfect, just unbelievable. i thought my 1980 1117-4 sounded great, this thing is even better. this model has the chrome machines and satin finish neck and headstock with pearl color ovation logo, my 1980 has a gloss neck and headstock with gold machines and gold ovation logo.
i usually never buy acoustic guitars through ebay, but i called this guy, it was a pawn shop, and he was very informative. he moves a lot of guitars and he said this was new. he said he doesn't use words like 'new' and 'mint' lightly...
i consider this one a deal at 350.00...
very nice even bass response, sweet easy action, loads of sustain, and really nice tight grain on the top...could have passed for a triple A if you ask me....no bear claw, but it does have that cool effect when the light hits it just right....giving it that 3d appearance...
flat as a table top behind the bridge and neck is very straight...
this baby is a keeper for sure..

Location: SoCal | Ernie, what's the serial number on your new Legend? Might be older than a 2000. Hadn't Ovation gone to the smaller fretmakers and inlaid rosette by then?
Regardless, great purchase. It's a beautiful instrument. My personal preference is for the older style Legends, like yours. |

i was thinking of putting a set of gold or gold with pearl buttons on her...
looks like all there is to do is loosen the nut on the headstock..
my 1980 legend also has one phillips screw going into the back of the headstock for each tuning machine...
what do you think and what do they cost for a set, especially with the roundack logo on the back?...

Location: Upper Left USA | Changing the Tuner Buttons is easy but use caution when changing the Tuner mechanisms themselves.
When you undo the retaining nut and press out the shaft and then the guide it is easy to chip or remove part of the finish or peg face.
This was severe on my Breadwinner and I ended up putting a Walnut vener across the peg face.

Location: SoCal | I don't know if guides (these are sleeves inside the hole on the peghead) are used anymore. Woodrow is right in that if they are used, you want to be careful if you remove them. But I also don't know why, if they are there, you'd want to remove them.
If you don't have them to mess with or don't need to mess with them, then all you need to be certain of is that you get tuners with the same retaining screw spot as the old tuners. You can get what you need from stewmac. |

also, it seems all they have there is the machines with the phillips guide screws that my new legend doesn't have...
also, i thought ovations new machines have the little roundback guitar logo on the back, maybe schaller makes them custom for ovation..
i should probably just call john or kim and buy a set from them...
at least i think i can handle the replacing...

Location: Carle Place, NY | The tuning machines that don't have a visible retaining screw have a small post that fits into a small hole under the machine. They are very easy to remove. If you are thinking of replacing them, it might be a good idea to take one out and measure the location of the post so that you get an exact match. |

Maybe just change out the buttons for now. I like the Pearloid ones from Stewmac. |

I have a 1981 1117. Great guitar...really great sound,even though she's all warped and cracked.
My Legend is probably the closest I will get to the sound of a 1537. I see the 1537 on e-bay is going cheap...but my upcoming wedding certainly is not!
I am seriously thinking of moving most all of my other guitars in order to be able to purchase a 1537. We'll see what happens...all God's timing.

I'm glad you did well with this guitar. When I first saw it posted, I thought it was winner. I'm glad to hear that it was. But if I may offer this advise concerning the tuners, IMHO:

Location: Rocky River, Ohio | well said, thanks joe...only reason i was considering it was that i know that my 1980 legend acoustic is due to visit the mother ship for substantial work....i figured as long as it was there, why not dress up the new one to match the old one's gold tuners...
in general i like to keep things stock and original.. |

The tuners on the "17's" are pretty terrific already. The ratio is great, and they keep the guitar in tune quite nicely. I had a 1517, which is low end compared to yours, and the tuners really did the job.
