Location: Spencer, OH | I have a 12 String Standard Balladeer and I have it hanging in my living room. We do not use AC in the summer and I humidify in the winter. I am getting some ugly warping on the soundboard, what can I do about this? I use a good quality guitar hanger. I hang the guitars so that I can grab them and play easily. Anyone else have this problem with their sound boards? |

Location: Carle Place, NY | I have an '85 Custom Balladeer 1755 that has quite a bit of warping around the bridge. There are no cracks though. I bought the guitar that way from a collector that originally got it at a west coast NAMM show (first year of that model). He sold it specifically because of the warping which rendered the guitar in less than collectors condition. The warping seems to have stabilized. I keep the guitar on a wall hanger in my basement which admittedly subjects it to variations in humidity. The guitar sounds great and the warping is only visible when you look at the guitar from certain angles. I don't see any reason to fix it, if that can even be done w/o replacing the whole top. The spruce top on the guitar is really nice with a subtle "flame" to it. The action is really low and there's still one shim left inder the saddle.
I guess if I bought the guitar new and this happened, I might be pissed. However considering that it's 20 years old and I've had the guitar for two years and the warping hasn't gotten worse or affected the playablility, I'll just leave it alone. |

Tune down a 1/2 step.
If it hangs unplayed for long periods, you might consider loosening the strings altogether....a bitch to retune when you want to play, I know... |

Laminated tops are normally much sturdier because two or more pieces of wood are laminated with the grains going in different directions. This makes the the top much more stable, but also prevents the top from vibrating properly, which degrades the sound considerably. Solid top guitars are normally best stored in climated controlled rooms or at least in their cases. I use a de-humidifier and A/C in the summer and a humidifier in the winter. Ideally, about 50% humidity and 70 - 75 degrees is best. For the most part, conditions that are comfortable for you are comfortable for your guitars. |
