I have the new Op-Pro on my 05 collectors. It doesn't have a notch filter for such a high end guitar. My Gibson Songwriter Deluxe has one and it has come in handy.

Will I need it on the Ovation? It seems like Fishman puts it on their stuff standard and Ovation dumped it after the Optima preamp.

Any thoughts?

I am curious about the new preamp Ovation wouldn't tell us about that had a bell and whistle. Will it be coming out this summer? Wonder if they've added a notch to it?

Since my primary experience playing in volume situations was with a solid body, I actually sought out feedback. Last June I bought an adamas with a notch filter. Well, I can play my acoustic much louder, but playing at volume with an acoustic is only secondary for me. The pros on this board would probably say that a stand alone should be your primary filter, with the on board notch being secondary. It all depends where you play, I guess very small venues the onboard notch will be fine, anything larger you'll probably need a stand alone.

I've been using the OP-Pro (Legend LX) for well over a year now for bar gigs. The volume is not really loud, but I've never had a problem with feedback at all.

In my opinion a notch filter is like breast augmentation surgery. Some folks don't need it. Others swear by it. It all depends on your application. Dave

I've got one on my Legend-12 and have NEVER needed to use it (and I gig just about every weekend).

Depends. My last gig I needed a notch filter and it was frustrating to not have it on the OP pro.

Of course, all my prior gigs I never needed to use the one in my Optimas. Now that all my O's have the OP pro, feedback seems to be an issue. Just freakin' lovely!

John;

Are you getting lo-end "howl"?
I've noticed that you tend to accentuate the lo-end to get that thumpy, bass sound . . .

Y'might wanna consider a pair o'FeedbackBusters . . .

I played my 1771-LX in a church setting and the feedback was unbearable. We play fairly loud and whenever I got too close to the monitors (less than 4ft) or the bass amp (less than 6ft), it was howl city. I tried a rubber soundhole insert with some success. The ultimate fix was an LR Baggs Para-acoustic DI which has both the notch filter and the phase switch that are absent from the OP-PRO.

Is everyone else going to just let Dave's analogy of the notch filter and breast augmentation surgery just slide by without comment? What else is analogous in your mind, Dave? Connecting Dave's dots could be a fascinating, full time occupation.

Not to pat my own back, but I thought the analogy for Notch Filter (NF) was pretty darn good. Think about it.

Do you absolutely need a NF? No
Does a NF add cost? Yes
Is a NF a benefit in certain situations? Yes
Is Paul Temp an expert on NFs? Yes

Now read those questions and responses again, substituting "Boob Job" for "NF".

I thought it was great! As a lawyer, I hear analogies all day, mostly dumb ones, like "lawyers are worse than...", but Dave's was a classic. I never really understood the purpose of the notch filter until Dave's analogy, but then I've given a lot more thought to why women have or don't have boob jobs than I have given to notch filters.
