I'm sure there's been a thread like this in the past, but not since I joined (unless I completely missed it) so let's have one again, shall we? ;)

Say something like where you live.
What you do for a living.
How you started playing the guitar.
What kind of music you like/like to play.
What kind of guitar(s) you have.

Anyways, I'm from Lawrence, KS, I'll be a sophomore at the University of Kansas this fall :) I'm an elementary education major with every intention of one day serenading my kids with melodious tunes from my Ovation :D

I've only been playing for less than a year so I'm nothing special, but my original aspirations were just playful nonsense. I liked the campfire abilities of the guitar, the socialness it has in sing a longs. I picked up the guitar when I was younger, but had trouble learning to play on my own. When I got to college, a friend of mine began to teach me how to play. I plan on taking some real lessons sooner or later so I can learn to read music, but until then don't take me too seriously :p

I own an Ovation Celebrity, I played a friend of mine's Ovation and I absolutely fell in love with it, so I got one of my own. It's a bottom of the line Ovation, but it's still nice, and I really couldn't afford much more :( But it's still a whole lot nicer than the $50 "Rok Axe" I first learned on :D

On airplanes. My home is near San Francisco. So far this year I have been in the other California, AZ, NM, CT, AL, OR, WA, FL, GA, DC, MD, VA, PA, TX, CO, ID, WV, NC, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and I changed planes in London.

What do you do for a living?
Try to get big organizations to buy a CD with software code on it for outrageous sums of money.

How you started playing the guitar?
Bought one when I got into college. Before that, I used to sneak off to my friends houses and play their guitars as my folks were always putting different instruments into my hands, like the clarinet, voila, banjo, etc. and I didn't want to be a dork. I wanted to be Dick Dale when I grew up, not Benny Goodman or Grandpa Jones (even though I like their music).

What kind of music do you like?
Something original, melodic, well played, well written, and makes me feel something. "Pop" generally does not make the cut.

What kind of music do you like to play?
Lots of stuff ... but mostly surf, acoustic/electric rock (think Counting Crows), electrified blues, and straight ahead rock. Mostly I like to noodle around and write original tunes that run the gamut.

What kind of guitars do you have?
1311, 1271 in Mahogany, 1537, 2000, 6759, EA68, EAB68, Deacon 12, Ric 360V64/12, Strat, Surfcaster, Danelectro DC59, Hamer Mirage, Epi FlameKat, Epi Viola Bass, Ibanez SRE300 bass, StratoViper. Hopefully an OFC slothead later this year.

Kent, England, very close to London.

40 years ago I talked my godmother into buying me a guitar so that I could become rich and get laid. I am still that shallow. I achieved neither.

Temporarily retired jazz guitarist, although I have a new found part time job where, as soon as it gets dark, I go sit ona lily-pad and croak.

these days only my Country Artist. The best O there is and not to be confused with those multi-coloured, multi-holed collector's items. Some of which are overweight in the lower bout department (as indeed are many of the OFC if you look at the tour pics). Although I'm developing a real itch for a Wechter.

Say something like where you live. --- Mid-Meeshegan

What you do for a living. --- Practice the black art of UNIX voodoo

How you started playing the guitar. --- Picked it up, formed a first position Em7, strummed it. Without knowing what I was doing, I managed to work up a little ditty that was really a I-IV-V using that open Em7 and the barre chord form thereof.

What kind of music you like/like to play. --- This song I wrote that's a I-IV-V starting with an open Em7. Just kidding...blues, jazz, jazzy blues, bluesy jazz, zydeco, cajun, classic rock. Just about anything as long as it's a I-IV-V in E or G.

What kind of guitar(s) you have. --- Nice ones. Well, OK, a 1989 Ovation Elite 1868, a 1996 Hamer Studio FM, a 1986 Steinberger GP-4S (modified to be a 7S by a previous owner), Peavey Cropper Classic, Peavey strato-copy. Shortly, the Ovation, the Hamer and the Cropper will be going on the block to finance my next Ovation purchase (and Al doesn't even know it's coming....yet).

I live high in the mountains of God's Country.

I'm a peddler

Fell in love with Pat Boone, then Elvis, then Beatles, etc (and later the girls, girls, girls).

Played the harmonica on TV at age 6 but switched to guitar at age 7.

Had almost all my gear stolen in the early 80's, got disgusted and didn't play for over 10 years.

Love Prog rock, power pop, good old style country (Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves, etc) and country rock.

Too many guitars to list but most of my current herd can be seen in my OFC gallery.

Currently having Scott Baxendale make me a matching set of guitars (a 6 & 12 string 12-fret slothead cutaway).

My name's John, and I'm an alcoholic. Woah - hang on, wrong board. Sorry about that.

I live on the Isle of Man. A "pittoresque" haven slap-bang in the middle of the Irish Sea. Come and visit, guys, it really is a lovely place. I work in Finance, as do most of the rest of the Island, playing with numbers for much of the day. It pays the bills. I don’t believe I’m any relation to John B from these boards, but anything is possible, I guess…

I started playing in the name of relaxation whilst avoiding revising for exams when I was 16. Ah, the things you can get away with when you cite 'stress'! My first song was “Alberta”, courtesy of Eric Clapton’s Unplugged album (three chords – still love those songs!). Now, 12 years later, I like playing everything from Glenn Miller through James Taylor via Hootie and the Blowfish to Queen. It’s all good. I’d like to be associated with the “No Rap” remark of earlier, but I’ve been known to get a little bit Country on occasions…

(for those of you in the UK, please stop thinking of “the Preston joke”).

Guitars-wise, I’m told I have too many. Most of their pictures are in the gallery, although I really need to update with new arrivals over the last couple of months. Going by the old adage “if it ain’t broke…” all my acoustics are O’s, as are a couple of my electrics.

Interesting thread. Good idea, that KittySox dude

My name is Ron.
I live in R.I., which is about 2 hours from the factory.
I started playing a crummy Kay archtop when I got knocked out by "Apache" and "Walk, Don't Run." Still can't play those songs, and I still like them. Many years later got motivated to play again by "Blue Collar" (BTO) and first Straits album. Picked up a Strat a few years ago and started to play, determined to move beyond basic folk chords.
Now I have Ovation 771 with a cedar top and an Elite LX. These are the nicest acoustics I've ever owned, and I have a pair of G&L copies of Strat and Tele, through old Champ amp.I play mostly blues, love Bloomfield, Peter Green, and Robben Ford.--Ron

My name is Gil.

I grew up in Syracuse, NY ... now living in Hicksville in Long Island -- pretty much, I followed my wife after graduating from college!

I am currently employed as a special education teacher for children with developmental disabilities at an educational facility in Flushing, Queens, NY.

I started playing guitar after hearing Jim Croce's "Time In A Bottle" on the radio. At that time, it was the most beautiful song I ever heard, that I pushed the piano aside, and picked up a guitar. My parents got me my first guitar -- made by Harmony -- but they decided not to pay for lessons, since I wasted so much from abandoning piano lessons. Pretty much, I taught myself how to play.

I appreciate all kinds of music (classical, jazz, rock and pop, etc.), and I love listening to most of them, but I tend to be selective with some "ghetto" style rap and hip hop stuff. Playingwise, I like folk mostly with the likes of Jim Croce (obviously), James Taylor, Neil Young, etc. The first strumming chords I played were D-G-D-A, and learned "Teach Your Children" by CSNY. Soon, I got to fingerpicking, and the first song I learned was Jim's "Photographs and Memories."

Jim has/had always been my influence. During his time, he played mostly Martins and Ovations, so I decided to do the same. It may not afford to own the guitars that he once played, but at least, I possess both brands.

I live in Algonac, Michigan...you know...just the other side of Fair Haven and this side of Pearl Beach. Right by the tower.

I work with heavy equipment hydraulic components. Dump trucks, excavators, and garbage trucks (Oops, I mean "refuse" trucks).

I started playing because everyone in my circle of friends did.

Music wise, I'm all over the place. I love to play 60's & seventies rock. I'm not afraid to play a Herman's Hermits song. I'm a HUGE Who fan. I like to listen to the soundtrack to "Nightmare Before Christmas" by Danny Elfman. Love the Beatles. Shania Twain is hot.
Best of all I have enjoyed jamming and playing out with BrianT the past 14 months. I had kept my playing in my living room for much to long.
