When I used to reside in the north country region of New York (Plattsburgh), I trusted my guitars to Paul Bordeaux for set-ups and repairs. I didn't realize that he, too made some great inlays, that I think it was once featured in an issue of an acoustic guitar magazine (I can't remember the exact name of the publication). I can still vividly picture the house where he used to do his work, on the corner of 22 and Military Tpke. also known as "Wiggletown," before moving to his present location in Malone, NY. |

Location: NJ | Both Laskin and Bordeaux WERE featured in an issue of AcousticGuitar this past year. IMO, Laskin does exhibit a higher level of "artistry", but I'm a bit more partial to Mr. Bordeaux's work for it's simplicity and austerity. To me, the inlay should just be an element to "set-off" the the beauty of the guitar, not distract from it.
That 1M Martin is total "Tammy Fay" . . . |

I agree that some of these are excessive and take away from the beauty of the guitar itself. But these instruments have kind of stopped being just guitars and have become an artist's canvas. When its got that much stuff on it, it's not about the guitar anymore, it's about the inlay.
So like Tammy Fay I'm guessing people are gonna look at that #1,000,000 Martin in amazement a lot more they're gonna play it. |
