Wow, I keep seeing Matrix' guitars going for dirt cheap. Usually less than $200. I'm thinking seriously about picking one up for a knock around town guitar.

Anyone have any experiences with these guitars? Good or bad? I'm already aware of the the fact that they can't be re-fretted due to the aluminum neck. How do they sound?

I dunno, for another 100 you could get the CC026 brand new, which is a great guitar for the price.

Yeah, I know, but I was kinda looking for an MIA deep dish. I already have a MIK thin crust (hee hee).

My super shallow Celebrity sounds really good plugged in, and a bit lacking unplugged. I was looking for something American made, with a deep bowl for a better unplugged tone.

I'll also be on the lookout for an older Legend, since they seem to go cheap as well. But the Matrix would probably be ideal for a knock about guitar, if it plays and sounds OK.

I don't think a Matrix for under $200 is "dirt cheap." Mine cost $249 in 1976. The aluminum/urethane necks cannot be replaced and although they were made in the US, they still had laminate tops. Most I've seen on ebay have finish cracks or worse. I agree with E. For $200, I'd rather have a Celebrity, but I also agree with you that the deep bowl sure sounds nice. My shallow bowl Custom Balladeer sounds about as good than the Matrix, and I just got it for $225. I would think you could get a regular Balladeer for about that if you shopped well.
