Location: SoCal | Don't quite know how to say this without embarassing people, but a tremendous kindness has been bestowed on me and without naming names and making people blush, I'll tell you what surprise yesterday left me speechless.
Yesterday, when picking up my mail, a guitar box from Ovation was presented to me. Contained an almost flawless 1987 Collectors. Now you all know that this guitar has been on my short list for a long long time.
One popped up on ebay last month and was purchased by a sneaky fool from this board who owns and operates an ark (but I won't mention any names). Seems that he and somebody else from this board (who lives in San Diego and is well known for his love of original Admaii and Custom Legend 30th Anniversary guitars -- but again, I won't mention any names), decided that this guitar needed to be in the hands of somebody who would truly appreciate it (enter a tall handsome fellow who doesn't just play a private investigator on t.v., and who only knows 3 chords but is always on the lookout for the 4th chord).
So they bought it, shipped it to more sneaky people at the mothership (who's name won't be released but his initials are J.B. and when you meet him just a couple of times, you feel like you've known him 30 years) who fixed some minor problems, but then decided that the neck of the guitar would be better served by being replaced, and came up with a replacement neck.
This guitar was then shipped to that certain p.i. who only stood there with his mouth open catching flys, for I'd say a maximum of 20 minutes. A letter was enclosed from the C*lm*an / Chr*st*es*n Guitar Adoption Agency (please note that I have cleverly blanked out parts of the names so that their identities will be kept secret) was enclosed asking if the guitar could stay with me for a while and then, down the road we could make it permenant if all were happy with the new home.
Well, suffice to say ("suffice it to say" is gramatically incorrect but everybody uses it -- I know this because "suffice" was one of my 9th grade student dictionary words, and some things stay with you forever), this guitar will stay here and the debt will be paid (very very happily) before it's expected with two benefits. First, my wife isn't complaining about me just buying another guitar and spending a lot of money. Thru the kindness of strangers, she can't say no to this one (YES!!!), and two by being able to pay for it over a few months, it becomes much more affordable to my pocket book, while still putting money away for the OFC'er.
All I can say is thank you. Last June, the people who were interviewed for the Ovation dvd while in CT, all compared notes as to their answer on one particular question "why did you come to the OFC gathering in CT"? All of us answered with the same answer, "Because of the people". We argue politics, we tell dirty jokes, we climb all over people we see as being mean or unfair, but this is a great group of people. I've been on both sides of the kindness thing, giving and receiving. It's a wonderful thing.
Thanks guys. |

A new song required a 4th chord from Paul.
The ladies really had him sweating... they abandoned the new song.
For its debut, Paul shared his new ’87 at Worship Service the morning of August 21st, 2005.
Tony and I are so grateful to John, Kim, and their team.
Without their magic, we would not have been able to pull off this surprise.
It is beautiful and sounds as fantastic as it looks.
18 years ago, it would not have sounded this good.

I'll just enjoy it all the more when it gets here.

I was trying to figure which of the 3 he was playing in the pictures, but it didn't look like C, F or G to me, so it must not be a country western version of gospel music. |

The best part has to be a speechless wife. Mine would never believe that somebody would just send a guitar to me without getting money first. Although I did shut her up when she told me she just didn't get why I wanted a 1537 and I told her I didn't get why she had to have more than one piece of jewelry or new kitchen cabinets. I think she figured out that I could come up with a lot more examples. She was thrilled with her new kitchen cabinets, by the way. Maybe I'll go over to the kitchen cabinet fan club and see what they're doing. |

Honestly, there is so much guitar in these three, I have no desire to get another (though a certain unnamed OFC miscreant is dangling such things as Lowdens and Fyldes just beyond my nose...but that's not important.)
So...
I'm thinking why not send my wooden roundback (see "Opics") on a little, multiple stop, indefinite, round trip OFC tour???

It ain't gonna win any sound awards, but it got me through SE Asia and it sure is unique... |

But I put mediums on the 87 last Saturday (Adamas mediums), and the guitar lost some of the briskness that it had when it arrived. When played hard, it had plenty of deep end, which I like, but when fingerpicking gently, it lost a lot of ressonance.
I picked up a set of EXP light gauge strings last night and will put them on in the next day or so. I'll let you know what happens. |

This is just my opinion based on my own experience, but if you're trying to get back some of the "briskness" that was lost with the medium strings, you may be disappointed with the EXPs. I've got a set on my Elite right now and I don't care for them. They feel stiffer than the D'Add EJ16s I normally use eventhtough they're exactly the same guage. And they sound dead acoustically, no ring, no crisp high end. They sound okay plugged in, which is the only reason I haven't been in a hurry to change them out. Since these are the strings that are factory installed on new Ovations, it could be that I just got a bad set.

Since the topic of this thread is OFC kindness, I'll send you a set of Martin Bluegrass strings for your newly acquired '87 Collector's. They are regular bronze light/medium gauge (.012-.056). I think that the loss of brightness with medium strings is due to increased tension and it only really effects the high E, B and G strings. Try them out, for free.

Maybe we need a kindness section, where we try to out-kindness each other, though the one in this thread will be hard to match. |

Strings are like a box of chocolates, You never know the sound until you try them.
A lot depends on the guitar, the style of playing and what you like in the way of sound. |

I put the EXP lights on both the 1537 and the 87, last Saturday. Both guitars sounded bright and very similar. The 87 has been played a lot since then. While it's a coated string, the EXP's on the 87 have lost a lot of that brightness. I'm surprised because Elixirs tend to hold one tone for a very long time. Playing the 87 next to the 1537 shows a real difference.
I'll let you know how the Martin Bluegrass strings sound (thanks very much Mitch -- very kind of you). After that, I've got a few sets of the new Elixirs, the phosper bronze strings coming and I'll try them.
Now, to pass along the kindness, I've got three sets of Adamas medium gauge strings that I'm not using. Anybody want them? I'm happy to send them to a worthy home. |

Location: SoCal | In the last 2 weeks of playing the 87 Collectors, I've tried 4 (I think) different sets of strings and have decided that this is not a bad guitar regardless of the strings. It sounds better plugged in than my 1537 (let's face it, the OP24 is one of the best preamps ever designed (even the OP Pro is a redesign of it, but with a tuner), and is just a joy to play. It's rapidly become my #1 instrument to pick up.
The strings tried have been D'Addario lights that came on the guitar (these could have been EXP lights, I don't know), then Adamas medium gauge, the EXP lights, then finally, Martin Bluegrass strings.
The Adamas mediums were just wrong. You had to play too hard to get the full sound out of them. I'm starting to re think my position of mediums. Lights bring out a crispness in the guitar. I replaced the Adamas strings with EXP lights. These are coated strings that should have lasted for ever. Oddly, after about a week and a half of a lot of playing, they started to sound dull. I replaced them last night with the Martins. They sounded great when new, but now, after playing for an hour in church and a lot of playing at home, the bass E is starting to go south.
The next strings I'm going to try are the Elixir phosper bronze lights. They should have a very bright full sound, and Elixirs last forever. I'll keep you posted. |

Just a suggestion, but why don't you try a set of D'Addario EJ16s or Adamas light guages before you make a long range commitment to the Elixers? They're light guage, but deliver a lot volume, with punchy bass and nice crisp trebles. The D'Add EJ16s are the only strings I put on my six string O's. |

Location: SoCal | Jeff, that's a good idea and I'll probably do that. FYI, the D'Addario's and the Adamas strings are the same strings, made by the same company.
This just seems to be a time of experimentation. It's a pain, but it's a good thing. |

Location: Omaha | I'm trying a set of Martin SP Fingerstyle Mediums on my 1777 Legend right now...they seem to be a good "fit," for lack of a better term: what I mean is, because of the scale of most Ovations (25.25"), the mediums don't feel as stiff, and these Fingerstyle strings are designed, according to Martin, to be more flexible, and I believe that to be true; they feel "lighter" than other mediums. Sound is excellent as well, like other SP strings. I've found the SP's to last as long as D'Addario's... |

My son gave me a set of Martin's for my ancient wooden acoustic and they sound great acoustically. I don't have a pickup on it, so I don't know how they would sound electrically, but acoustically they have held out quite well.

I figured since this is the "Ovation Fan Club," I'd give the home boys a plug. ;) You're right, they really ARE the exact same strings. I've used both with identical results in tone and longevity. |
