Location: NJ | There is a tenative date of Friday September 30th for a gathering of all original Adamas slothead owners at the factory in New Hartford, CT.
Rick Hall and I have brainstormed many ideas to make this event speacial. The slothead Adamas guitar is the "holy grail" of the company and with the 30th anniversary a gathering of owners of the original instruments is a must.
Some of the ideas thrown about were photographing all guitars, and the group of owners. A special dinner event, plaques and other commerative items, an invitation to the namm show and the anniversary party. etc.
Bill Kaman will give a special Q and A session about the instruments and all owners will have a chance to talk about their instrument, how they obtained it etc.
Please e me at alpep@aol.com if you are interested in attending. I know that this is a small select group of owners but this event is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Also contact me privately if you have any questions or concerns.
thanks

As you may know, starting in the fall of 1976, twenty-six prototype Adamas guitars were released to select artists and dealers. These first 34 guitars are very unique and sought-after instruments that forever changed the Acoustic guitar world.
My question is how many 26 or 34? |

Some had necks, some had bowls, some had god knows what kind of frankenstein parts attached to them. I think none of them actually had slotted headstocks. The only real "slotheads" were the 34 pre-production ones + whatever kinds of Dadi conversions and Adamas II wanna-be makeovers that jealous owners of non-slotheads attempted. Dave |

Of the first 26 some were guitars, Sam has a few of these and some were never built into guitars. They were all real rough, canine variety. It's the first 34 that are the good players. |

| Hey Al...... Nice event your planning here. Once in a lifetime stuff. I am not lucky enough to own one of these beautiful guitars and have no intension of crashing the party, but I am wondering if perhaps you would make one of the many group photographs you will take of these great guitars available to the rest of us? Sell it through the store perhaps?
Also I have not seen any more mention of the OFC guitar. Am I correct in thinking this new guitar will be made similiar to these great old slotheads with electronics? If so I think I may have to force myself to find a way to get one.
By the way That Hamer 8 is beyond my expectations! There are some craftsmen & perhaps Women working in the Hamer factory. Well done! It was a pleasure doing this transaction through you.

There is some really cool stuff planned. I suggested to Rick that the guitars that show up get put on the laser vibrometer to see if they changed in any way and that the guitar owners get the readout to take for themselves.
There are plans to photograph all the guitars and owners in attendance. My plan is to complete a history of the Adamas book so eventually everyone will get to see all the photos. I may even get a calendar together but we will see what progresses.
Looks like we will use the Homewood suites in windsor lockes and those flying in want to go to Bradley airport.
please make sure you send me your names addresses and phone numnbers so I can provide them in advance.
keep in touch more info to follow.

| Ohh My God those guitars are beautiful! No doubt these were, and will always be, the very best Instrument Ovation ever made! You guy's enjoy this! I am sure the Factory will! nice event Al! Well done!
I sold my doubleneck Rickenbacker. I may be able to put myself on the list for one of the OFC guiars. Perhaps not as good as an original, but about as close as I will come to owning one of these. (not that anyone actually cares now that I read this but) I thought I would mention how much I appreciate these rare guitars and how lucky you guy's are to own one! Besides I want to be more like Cliff.
Peace! Love! Dope!

Just a little nostalgia, I spent some years from around 1947 til' 1953 farming with a IH Farmall cultivision A, the IH cub was a tiny version of that as I recall. We did a lot of custom combining with an IH combine powered by a 4 cylinder Continental engine towed behind our modified Farmall A (Big wheels, hydraulic seat, tampered governor, etc). When not doing custom work, my brother and I took the Farmall A and worked some local Threshers hauling in sheaves and working our asses off either in the loft forking straw or hauling bags of grain off the discharge into the granaries (straw came out of one end of the thresher and grain out the other at extreme quantities when they got the thing cranking off the big Case tractor power take off), and enjoying ample threshing dinners prepared by the wives of the threshing crews. We worked some udders 7 days a week also as dairying was what we lived off of, no llammas only cows that we entertained with our first attempts at country and bluegrass that we had to play in the barn as our parents were fans of orchestras and jazz.

Thanks for that. I like ALL the "old iron", but I am partial to IH since I own 4 of their garden tractor models.
Back on topic...
Been a major change in plans. I won't be making the trip to the Mothership with #45 this month, but I am going to send it up for the event.
If Rick Hall reads this, please get in touch with Kim. We've talked and he wasn't sure if I should send it as normal or to someone in particular.
Thanks. |

Those bringing their instruments in are actually providing a work shop/Seminar for the Kaman Luthiers for waived honorariums. That sounds fairly tax deductible!
That would make the MoodyPI-StandingO Team Sub-contractors. |

After we scarfed down the SoccerMom pizza, the pizza that we ordered arrived . . and I don't know HOW many arrived . . . but at the end of the night, when the vast majority of celebrants "faded", YoursTruly stayed behind to "tidy up" a bit. I consolidated all of the uneaten pies together and left the night staff about four whole pizzas in the kitchen (which I'm REALLY surprised wasn't served to us as the next morning's ComplimentaryBreakfast). . .
That, and a couple of night's worth of good(?) music in the Lobby has put us in good graces with staff at HomewoodSuites (despite the fact that the dumpster out back looked/sounded/smelled like the remains of an overturned beer truck on the Interstate . . .

| My God moody You flew in from CA for this? Now I feel really guilty... I had a busy weekend, always do, but I could have taken a break from all the building and come to this event. I am 3 hrs away. And I am certainly just kidding when I say "I will add some class to this event" but on the other hand I can no longer eat Pizza nor Drink Beer. Does sound like fun playing Music with a bunch of musicians and jamming some tunes for shits & giggles and a whole room full of Ovation Guitars. I'll plan on bringing my Bass & Guitar to next years? Still hope someone would learn the Mandolin parts to "Thats the Way" from Zeppelin??
Now this event with the slotheads is really something!
I wish I could accidentally, on purpose, have to bring my Adamas to the Factory for an electronic upgrade the same day this event is happening. This group of Ovation owners is very, very exclusive indeed! If I owned one of these I would make every effort to make this one time meeting!
Enjoy Guy's

What you want to do is to send the guitar you want upgraded to the factory 2-4 weeks ahead of time and then pick it up when you come up for the gathering.
Don't make me come down to NY and drag your sorry ass up to CT. It would be more than my sorry ass could stand.
Come next year. It's worth it. The factory tour is fun, but the people who come for the event, and those at Ovation make it something well worth while. |

There's a fella (shares your name) that had a job working on small dirt hills in Seattle and Cleveland, and actively plays guitars in support of his employment association with others, including Bernie Williams, one of our favorite Ovation poster children. Any relation to that Mark? |

Sorry to say I am not a lefty journeyman hurler...but it is not the first time I have been asked...since I played D1 college ball at the University of South Carolina - and turned down a draft to attend college and play college ball...He had a solid career...I hung up my catcher's mitt and spikes after 2 college seasons at 21....and opted for a career of playing roundbacks... Does my namesake like roundbacks too? That would be wild since my name and other activities paralled his quite a bit. I even keep his baseball card on my desk...I'll bet he doesn't own a slothead though..Heh heh. |

How's THIS for "History"??? :
Got a LOT of really great shots.
Unfortunately, in order to get this clockwork "Gallery" software to accept them is frustrating in that the images really suffer when you have to res them this small. For now, these two will have suffice until I can muster enough patience . . . .
We all had a GREAT time!!!
BIG thanks to Al, Bill, Frank, Rick, Kim, and (again) the ENTIRE Factory staff . . . .
We all got a private FactoryTour, and (while I'd aleady SeenIt/DoneIt) it was fun watching ElginAcres see it all for the first time. Much like watching a kid on Christmas. After lunch, we all did a private tour of the "traditional" Adamas section of the operation, and and a bunch of the guys had gotten a printout of how their SlotHead fared on the LaserVibrometer . . . purty interesting shit. Adamas veteran Nick Mackin was there to offer a LOT of SlotHead insight/anectodes, and my stomach STILL hurts from laughing while sitting across from Bill and next to Timm Kummer at Fri. nite's dinner!
We had a BLAST!!!
It's late and maybe I'll make an attempt t'get some more pictures up tomorrow, but when y'gotta make 'em this small, they really suffer . . . .
(yes, Paul . . . there are in fact a pair of REALLY old Nationals (a Style "O" and a Style2 TriCone) that'll be "wintering" here in NJ, and I'll be needing to pick up an instructional Mando book . . . hope we get a SHITLOAD of snow this Winter!:-) |

There seems t'be some speculation (according to Mr. Mackin's recollections) that some of those "celeb" guitars MAY had been returned to the Factory . . . and then from there . . . who knows? . . . |

Location: Colorado | Yes we did determine that mine is #43. Darren W. went through many gyrations and original documents to determine this. The fun part is that Nick did say that some of the originals from artists came back to the factory, then they were disseminated in many ways..but it is only 30 years of memory at this point that documents this. Both CWK2 and TK believe they had my guitar at one point too...completely overshadowing the rumour that Nancy had it. It's obviously worth more now that Bill once had it and traded it! Curiously there is no official documentation at the factory (which we saw) saying which guitar(slothead) that Nancy W. got. They do show her getting one that was not a slothead, and there are several pictures of her with a slothead... confirming that she indeed got two..but not necessarily both slotheads. She says she still has one - and she has no idea which one it is. As for accounting for the others, it is going to to take someone actually having real conversations with some artists to try to track the slotheads down. One amazing thing about having all these guitars together was to play and feel the differences between these 10 guitars. We each found ourselves having our own biases - even among these great guitars. For instance, I learned very quickly I could fall in love with one of the wide neck slotheads. Hmmm...no I gotsta find one that's available. |

Seems in recent years wide necks have definately caught on and I know that I myself now am much more comfortable with 1-3/4 or 1-7/8 necks compared to the skinny's. It's a real shame that the #47 reissue or the OFC guitar couldn't be offered in an optional wide-neck (for an extra charge). IS ANYONE LISTENING? |

but then, I played the U681T/FD/Lowden- all with 1 3/4 inch neck. I'm never going back. As much as I'd love to own a #47, I'm not going to buy 'cause, I know it won't get played because of the narrow neck. |

It's so easy to play, and I don't have the reach problems with a regular classical. Would the fret wire be lower than is the standard now? Wider neck, flatter radius, lower fret wire?

It was a great time. Aside from the 10 guitars you see pictured I have located another 7 so that is half of the production of slot heads. (if you include the 12 string which was not a slot head but in the group)
I wish more could attend but I am thankful for what we had. It was a really cool gathering of guitars and people. Watching Nick in the factory was worth the price of admission right there. He has not seen guitar manufacturing for 20 years and things have changed.
Just a public thanks to Rick Hall, Frank Untermyer, Kim Keller, John Budny and the men and woman of the factory that once again let us impose on them. A special thanks to Bill whose passion for these guitars is unsurpassed by anyone.
btw cliff you were correct I did "assemble" breakfast |

| Construction--- Have I---! I got a concrete truck coming tomorrow and my second lumber delivery this month. It's all for a good cause though. I gave up my Music Room/ practic hall. So my Mom will have a place to live right with us. Hated to give it up but My mom is the coolest Mom there ever was. Making a huge appartment out of the upstairs of the three stall garage and building the deck she always wanted off one side. And I just got done building a 12 by 16 shed over an outdoor wood boiler to heat the house and the garage this winter! No More OIL for me I have had quite enough and I got lots of wood.
Anyway This really looked like it was one cool event! I sure plan to make it to next years gathering. I would love to play one of these slotheads for a few minutes, if someone was good enough to let me? I sure hope I can put together the cash to buy one of the OFC guitars this may be the second best instrument Ovation ever made!
These were the one of the most interesting guitars ever made as far as I am concerned! Nice photo in the thread. Now how bout one with just the instruments!

I heard you say that they laser-spectrometered the instruments and I saw in your Gallery that there was a printout from back then.
Curious if any of the instruments have changed their resonant characteristics in any way? |

Location: Colorado | # 43 made it to the vibrometer. I have a printout of the response. It has changed a little, but probably not enough to consider it audible. Curiosly the double peaks involved in the response are tighter on 43 than some of the others. If you are talking less than 1/4 db at 19000hz, probably not enough to reduce the jangle. I also altered the guitar a little in 1992 - put in a OP-24 - for which Kummer promptly called me Dr. Mengele.
As for the rumoured rowdiness at dinner, I feel we would have gladly welcomed anyone of those who left. Down on the Newer Jersey end of the table - poor Al had to look at me the whole meal! |

I believe there was a BIT of a difference in the measurements from 30 years ago to now - but you have to take into consideration that there's been a drastic change in the technology since then. Nick Mackin said that for the most part, the measurements in '76 were "mechanical" measurements of the deflection of the top, whereas the LasVib "maps" the way various areas of the top interact with each other during the creation of a specific frequency.
It was interesting to see how MOST of the SlotHeads "see-sawed" in the lower bouts - whereas the lower bass bout would "pump", and as that declined, the lower treble bout took over.
Two Slots (I believed it was ElginAcres' #43 and PlayAdamas' #50) behaved a bit differently in that both lower bouts "pumped" more in unison - very much like a Martin dreadnaught (we watched the profiles running side-by-side to a Martin dread's profile). The funny thing was that Mark (ElginAcres) said that he bought this Adamas BECAUSE it was the first Ovation that he ever played that "sounded like a dreadnaught" . . . .
Seeing/playing them all in the same place made me realize that even though they were all "kinda" made at the same time, they were all like batches of cookies - or snowflakes - while they're all "kinda the same", they have individual characteristics. Even LOOKING at them side-by-side, you can SEE subtle variations in appearance.
Some had more gold around the fibreglass ring than others, there where variations in the amount of gold glitter applied to the top finishes (even the BOWLS for that matter), and there where just subtle differences in color (albeit "ageing" could be a factor). If y'look at the group photos, you'll notice that there really aren't too many (if any) that are "The Same" Colour . . .
It's almost like a litter of puppies. |

Location: Rego Park, NY, | Great pictures Cliff!! As you know I was not able to make the trip. My father in-law has been in hospital since mid July. we heard from the doctor's that he needed a dialysis treatment. He is 89 years old and all of his organs were beginning to shut down. Without the dialysis he would not last the weekend. He received treatment on Friday and by Saturday afternoon his vital signs were getting better. He also spent Saturday afternoon beating my sister in-law at poker. I was close but it looks like he is going to be fine. I want to thank Al for being so understanding . I felt really bad about cancelling. If I had come I probably would not have my mind totally on the day's events.
I am glad to see that everyone had a great time. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Cliff, PLEASE don't tell Michael that he's got a slothead that pumps like a Martin Dread. For christ sake we'll never hear the end of it. The guy has ears that hear things nobody else does. Typical situation:
Playadamas: "Now, listen to that 3rd harmonic it's got much clearer ring on this guitar compared to that one. If you tilt the guitar 2 degrees towards the floor the whole sound really opens up. Listen."
StandingO: "Yeah, Mike, whatever. It's blue and it's fun to play. Next."

I'm working on something that I'll send you for the calendar, if y'want it(it follows along the line of Bill's suggestion . . .).
I'll send you a "rough concept", once I have something somewhat "presentable" . . . .
Adamas #3000:
I'm assuming that it was just s/n 3000.
Somebody played it, and said "hey! this thing sounds GOOD!!"
(Bill'd have to elaborate . . .)
This thing's got some MondoBoffo bass response!!!
The "XmasBowl":
This was AT the last Tour (but it was hidden behind the "BlackCurtain"). When Darren and I were discussing "off the wall" finishes, he broke down and showed this to me, but made me promise "not to tell" . . .
This visit, since it was laying out in the open, I figured it was "FairGame" (Louie in Engineering even wiped it down for me so I could get a nice pic:-) I flipped it over, and got a shot of the top too, but it's so much like a MIRROR that you really just see a reflection of the shop ceiling & lights.
I also got a pic of a REALLY cool CustomOrder, but Louie made me PROMISE not to publicize it, as the celeb recipient'd probably get pissed if it got out before he/she saw it . . . . |

Dave;
What the f&*^k do I care????
If I wanted a guitar that sounded like a Martin dread, I'd BUY a Martin dread!!! The thing I like about MY guitar is that it has a distinctive sound (that DOESN'T sound like a Martin dread) . . . . |

Location: Colorado | True story - 1985 - I was in Atlanta - actually looking for an Elite - not a dreadnaught. None of the stores had one in natural - so I passed - a sales person sent me to another store - but they did't have one either - but they had this slothead sitting in the corner. I played it for a few hours, and even commented that it sounded more like a dreadnaught than any other Ovation I had ever played. I was not saying it was better or worse - just sounded more like a dreadnaught. I purchased it - fast forward 20 years to the vibrometer, and Darren says out of the blue - look ...this one reacts closer to a dreadnaught Martin than the others. Not better - not worse - it just is....Thanks for bringing it up Cliff - yopur sheet of cookies example is right on - the fact is they all taste goooooood. It's just weird to have someone 20 years later ...out of the blue ...confirm something I had said in passing...my ears did not deceive me! Any yes - I was like the little child who was left overnight in Toys R Us. It was great. |
