There was a time when I would obsess on my inabilites and shortcomings. But times passes and maturity teaches it's lessons. I continue to advance at my own pace with whatever amount of talent I have been blessed with. But when it come down to it, I'm just happy to be here.

Yup my face involuntarily contorts when I play. It's something that I've been taunted about all my life, and I was even fired from a wedding reception band because of it!

I can't stop it! HELLLLLLP!!!

 I'm one awful guitarist ... other than the basic ability to fingerpick and play basic chords here and there, I manage to get by. One thing I'm thankful for, at least, is that I can carry a tune when I sing and be able to play a song in its entirety, so I guess that can compensate for the sub-standard guitar work.

Paul, if you put a capo on each successive fret, you can use those same three cord positions to get, like six.

Barr chords are my problem right now. Sometimes they sound good other times they don't. :D

We don't need no "stinkin barre chords here". We can't even spell them the same!
Just roll your thumb over the top, you can at least play the major and minor of everything up the neck.
I'm just plain lazy, I guess.

I was always told to place your thumb on the back of the neck, not to roll it over the top... guess I don't follow directions very well.
I'm doing OK on basic open chords, except for C.
My wrist just doesn't want to twist in that direction (and fat fingers don't help)!!!

I have noticed that I sound better (to me) on the Adamas and Custom Legend than on my Celebrity CC11. Go figure.

Actually, I really don't recommend the thumb method. Like other playing techniques, it is far better to struggle until you learn to do it right. But I have done it wrong for so long it is hard to change.

I'm bad at them right now, so they probably would sound better to people that have been in the bar for a while. :D

Same deal at your home bar. They would sound pretty good if your 3 sheets in the wind. :D

I took classical lessons for several years and managed to forget most of what I learned. It did not stop me from acquiring ten guitars, they don't test for ability at the cash register.

First i learned music when i was 8 years old. I understood music at 14 years old. Which made me realise that all that matters is how you make your intstrument sound. Different ways of playing equal different sounds. Size of figer has nothing to do with anything.

To me, once you ve learned music, you can understand it by learning to play your axe the Richie Havens way. Then, you'll need some botox injections on a weekly basis.

My current "excersize" is to travis pick "Desperado" just a fast as I can. I'm shooting for "Flight of the BumbleBee" speed. Not that I'll ever play it that way, it's just good for the finger muscles.
BTW...thanks for the response to this poll. I found if very interesting.

Jeff,
Even someone who is regarded as a "damn good" player out in the big wide world can look very average in this crowd.
Broaden your perspective just a tad and you'll find people who wish they could play like you.
That's my Ward Cleaver speech for the day.

Jeff, I met some people at the Tour who talk here about how they play, they're nothing like pros, they just pick for fun, they're not that good, blah, blah, blah.

Then I got to see them sit down at the motel and play. They're all a bunch of liars.

I sort of fit into 1, 2 and 3... so I put 1. But I love playing some lead from time to time, not that I'm much good at it.

Here's a question - when you pick up a guitar at a store, what chord do you play first? Mine's almost always a cowboy D.

For me it is D minor while fingerpicking.

Something about a D minor tells you whether the guitar has got "IT" or not.

Yeah Cliff...your right.
I should stop trying to do my job and post on the OFC at the same time.
Maybe I'll just quit my job.

And I guess I meant an "augmented" G in the spritual sense...not the literal.

Sorry...It was a feeble attempt at humor. Even as I hit the "post" button I had regrets. I went right back in to delete the embarrasment but it was to late. Captain Cliff was on it like a hobo on a hot dog within 60 seconds of my post. So, if I delete it now it will entirely disrupt the flow of the thread. I guess I'll just have to deal with it.

Sorry, Brad... it's the unfulfilled Teacher in me.

So what were you trying to describe? A G with the second string at the 3rd fret?

The horse is lying there.
It hasn't moved in forever.
Certainly not since the last time we beat it.
...
...
...
But is it really dead?

So Brad,

Tell us, what contributed most to feelings of inadequacy in this instance? The initial misguided interpretations of your F#+addb9add12 chord offering or the helpful, willing suggestions from your supportive, understanding companions in the sand box.

At this point I will point out that I really don't expect the horse to move. But you never know.

Brad,
Now Moody can add GMaj7+b2nd+b4th to his cord repertoire.

Good work!

These guys are tough. :D They are on poor ol' Brad like a duck on a June bug. :D

I usually play a G first, so I get to hear all the strings, followed by an E, then an A minor, then C, then D. Just my routine. Works good on electrics too. :)

I'll usually play open chords up the neck a little so I can hear the loudness, tone, sustain, etc. Two tunes I usually start with are Melissa or We Just Disagree.

With an electric I usually just get an A or D in before they pull the plug on me.

Then again, GC, if you were Brad these would be GMaj#9/F# followed by an Em7b5add5, then an EMajb11sus4, then EmMaj7 then finished off with E13b11b9sus4.

Brad,

It wasn't me see.
I didn't want to do it.
GrilledCheese lofted a cream puff and I couldn't pass it by.

Don't get me wrong, some of my best friends play those kind of chords. Nothing wrong with anybody playin' em. I'm a very liberal minded kind of guy when it comes to those kinds of chords.

Brad, I played that chord, exactly as you wrote it. Alone, in a locked room.
I... I can't... It, it changed me, man. It sounded like a pure sweet G. On a Taylor.

After an Ofan had gone through the high-end room "tuning" them.

Hey Brad, is that chord a Metric chord? Maybe thats why it sounds so odd, cause I play a English guitar.

I hadn't even looked at this thread for several days....geez....Brad shares a cool chord with everyone, doesn't get the name quite right and LOOK WHAT HAPPENS......

Maybe, I'll pen a little song to cheer him up.
