Ok, honestly now, a friend of mine is putting together a photo slideshow for a women's forum his company is holding this Friday. Can anyone think of any songs about women (their empowerment, strength, etc) preferably sung by women that might be appropriate?

I need three of four for the time allotted.

(And I absolutely cannot wait for the responses here)

The only thing I can think of is that nightmare of a song by Helen Reddy . . .

I threw the Reddy song out there already. The barrage of four letter words in his response was actually awe inspiring. Apparently the opinion of that song being a nightmare is pretty universal.

Tom Waitts has a good song entitled "Filipino Mattress Hog" . . . . but I'd venture that HR would have a bit of a problem with that one . . .

not a pretty girl, by ani difranco

i am not a pretty girl
that is not what i do
i ain't no damsel in distress
and i don't need to be rescued
so put me down punk
maybe you'd prefer a maiden fair
isn't there a kitten stuck up a tree somewhere

i am not an angry girl
but it seems like i've got everyone fooled
every time i say something they find hard to hear
they chalk it up to my anger
and never to their own fear
and imagine you're a girl
just trying to finally come clean
knowing full well they'd prefer you
were dirty and smiling

and i am sorry
i am not a maiden fair
and i am not a kitten stuck up a tree somewhere

and generally my generation
wouldn't be caught dead working for the man
and generally i agree with them
trouble is you gotta have yourself an alternate plan
and i have earned my disillusionment
i have been working all of my life
and i am a patriot
i have been fighting the good fight
and what if there are no damsels in distress
what if i knew that and i called your bluff?
don't you think every kitten figures out how to get down
whether or not you ever show up

i am not a pretty girl
i don't want to be a pretty girl
no i want to be more than a pretty girl

I call shenanigans. Anyone that claims this while paying into the Federal tax system is, by default, working for the man.

Nice catch, JW. I'll pass that along and see if there's anything they'd like to pick out of there as well. He was asking me about Alanis Morristte but I told him that might want to be very careful with her material. Strong? Sure, but I'm not sure I would call it empowering. But that might also be somewhat of a biased view. What are your thoughts on Alanis, P?

Helen Reddy's song brings back especially bad memories (I almost initially typed "mammaries". I wonder what Freud would think about that.) A guy in the next room in my college dorm used to play it over and over and sing to it. I finally silenced him by turning my speakers to the wall and wailing on my old Univox electric every time he played it.

Freedom lyrics

Artist - Melissa Ferrick
Album - Freedom
Lyrics - Freedom

sadness finds its way onto me
ya on any given day
and i just end up feelin guilty
and i don't know how many times i've told you
i do not know how i ended up this way
it's as if sometimes i have just halted
yeah i stop dead in my tracks
life it just seems to cover me
and it's in these moments that i feel trapped

so i claim freedom
i claim my freedom

so what is it exactly that you want from me
oh yeah you want me to say
even though i am terrified to let myself end up this way
yeah i'm afraid of feeling
of feeling nothing at all
and i'm afraid of settling down
into a love that ain't love at all

so i claim my freedom
i claim freedom

so take this brain out and hang it on the line
take this chair out back and burn it
'cause i can't get any work done from in here
you know this hole i dug myself in
has got me buried up to helpless

and i'd like to call you a liar
yeah but that's what you
what you liked to call me
yeah i'd like to call you a liar
liar
yeah but that's what you
isn't that what you always called me

so i claim my freedom
yeah i claim my freedom
freedom freedom freedom
freedom freedom freedom

oh, and i love alanis. :) maybe 'not the doctor.'
here's a great one by poe...

angry johnny

Johnny, angry johnny, this is jezebel in hell
I wanna kill you, I wanna blow you...away

I can do it to you gently
I can do it with an animal’s grace
I can do it with precision
I can do it with gormet taste

Chorus:
But either way
Either (way), either way
I wanna kill you
I wanna blow you...
Away

I can do it to your mind
I can do it to your face
I can do it with integrity
I can do it with disgrace

Chorus

Johnny, angry johnny, this is jezebel in hell
Johnny, angry johnny, this is jezebel in hell

I can do it in a church
I can do it any time or place
I can do it like an angel
To quiet down your rage

Chorus

I can do it in the water
I can do on dry land
I can do it with instruments
I can do it with my own bare hands

But either way
Either way, you know where it stands
I wanna kill you
I wanna blow you...
Away

Johnny, angry johnny, this is jezebel in hell
Johnny, oh my johnny

Where did your pleasure go
When the pain came through you
Where did your happiness go
This force is running you around now
Getting you down now
Where is your pleasure now johnny
Where has your pleasure gone now

Johnny, angry johnny...

This song really isn't on topic but it is a kick ass acoustic by Patti Rothberg. She sings and plays her ass off...Persphone, you may find you like her music....

Treat Me Like Dirt

Also, more on topic Lucinda Williams "Changed the Locks " -Kasey Chambers also does a cover of it that is FEE-NOM-A-NAL

EDIT: Corrected the title of the Lucinda Williams song.

Where it says "I wanna kill you, I wanna blow you away", in my line of work, well, you start walking carefully when you hear that. And Ani is wrong.... if I have fear (I prefer to think of it as prudence), it's because of the rage that cause's lines like the above to be written.

In my neighborhood, it's called common sense.

OUCH!! I've really underestimated my participation here if you had to ask me about Alice Cooper. One of my first garage bands cut their teeth on Eighteen, Schools Out, Billion Dollar Babies and others. One of the huge disappointments of that band was that we couldn't get a live boa into any of our houses (all of our mom's got together and stopped that in a heartbeat). We were able to get our singer to grab his mothers makeup though (whatta goob).
