Location: Flushing, MI | I was checking out a pawn shop today when I happened upon a very strange looking Ovation style guitar. The neck was aluminum, with the aluminum fretboard, and frets, like an earlier Matrix. The top was white, and didn't appear to be wood at all. Upon closer inspection, I'm convinced that the top was some weird kind of plastic, or something - not wood.
The name on the headstock said "Academy". The model # was KA14, and the serial # was 015512. It did say "Kaman", and "Made in CT. USA".
Does anyone have a clue? I'd never even heard of this one before. Anyone else?
BTW - it was a deep bowl and, although the strings were very rusty, it seemed to have the potential to sound pretty good. Plastic top (or whatever) and all!

Location: Phoenix AZ | The Academy was Kaman's attempt at an all synthetic guitar. Some members here have said that they sounded pretty darn good considering the raw materials involved. |

The Academy Guitar:
Played one at Master Keller's house . . .
I'd own one in a Heartbeat.
(For What it IS, it does the job very well) |

Location: Flushing, MI | Well, dummy that I am, I asked first then searched right after (duh). Turns out there's not mention about 'em on this board either. I've never heard of these at all! At first sight I thought it was some cheap copy until I looked into the soundhole and saw that it came from Kaman (which sounds like a GREAT movie title!). The neck was warped like a beeeeeeotch though - I thought that was the whole deal about the aluminum neck was that it was supposed to be warp free - WHAT?!? About 3/4 of the rosette was gone too, so it was quite a sad sight. |

Did you search For Sale as well as General posting? Try the Vault too, but there was a discussion just a few months ago on it.
EDIT: Here\'s one there are plenty more. |
