Location: Boise, Idaho | Anyone have a good tab for Croce's part on New York's Not My Home? I have the intro down, which he plays through the first two verses that he sings, but then I get lost. The tabs on the internet suck.
Same for Time in a Bottle. I have the intro and the chorus that I learned years ago, but I can't figure out what he plays when he starts singing. It sounds like a typical Croce progressing of fingerpicking barre chords, but I can't figure it out. I need to justify buying a new guitar with a new song. I'll have to learn a lot of them for the next purchase. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Back on topic. I've seen the tab that Cliff sent on bunches of websites. It is wrong from the start, so I haven't paid much attention to the rest of it. On my Croce DVD, I can see he starts at the 5th and 6th frets (I can't remember without a guitar in front of me), which is the same way I figured it before seeing the DVD. I'm a lot closer than the tab and I am pretty fussy about playing something that isn't at least 90% of the original. That's why I hardly ever finish learning a song. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | By the way, I haven't found any decent tabs of I'll Have to Say I Love You. . .either. It starts with C#minor barre chord with the 5th and 6th strings open and then barred. Hard to explain, but easy to show. It would also help if I could remember the notes on the guitar rather than play by ear, but I'll save that for when I retire. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Thanks for the "Time" tab, Stephen. I had the same one from somewhere a long time ago, but thought that the open Dm had to be wrong because it was so hard to change the bass note. Later, I was sure he was using a Dm barre chord, but could never get the bass note that way either. I'll keep working on the tab and see if it gets easier. They don't show him playing Time in the DVD, so I can't tell where he starts on the neck. |

Location: Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey | Last year I went through a phase of drowning myself in Jim's music...what a great writer. I went searching for a tab book, but none of them were tabs of what was actually played on the recordings...mostly just chord books and tabs of the vocal line.
Anyway, just about a month ago I happened to stumble on Hal Leonard "authentic transcriptions" of 'the very best of Jim Croce'. I believe it is a newly released book. It's got "Leroy Brown, careful man, I got a Name, I'll have to say I love you in a song, It Doesn't Have to Be That Way, One Less set of Footsteps, Operator, Photographs and Memories, These Dreams, Time In Bottle, Work' at the Car Wash Blues, You don't Mess Around With Jim."
Unfortunately, I have VERY limited computer access right now, and can't scan or .pdf any of it. But, for those interested, I thought I'd let you know it exists and costs about $20. Probably can be ordered through B&N or Amazon. |

I've found some gem "unofficial artist" sites where obscessed fans do music/tab transcriptions...often not found on the "big" tab sites. |

I get kind of choked up whenever I watch the DVD. Hard to believe that Croce would be 62 if he had lived. I'll have to visit his wife's restaurant when I'm in San Diego. |

Location: NJ | There was a book that I used to have that was either "The History of . . " or "The Complete . ." Jim Croce. Was a about and inch and a half thick, and had his ENTIRE catalogue (even the songs from his first album that he did with his wife) in it. I've checked my bookcases, but can't seem to locate it. I have a suspicion of whom I loaned it to, and'll have to make a call . . .
Had an old picture (circa. first album) of him sitting on a chair in the middle of a field with a blue sky in the background on the cover. Great book. I gotta find it . . . |

Location: Ft. Lauderdale, Florida | I really like that site because you can transpose the chords:
Transpose: -5 semitones -4 semitones -3 semitones -2 semitones -1 semitone None +1 semitone +2 semitones +3 semitones +4 semitones +5 semitones +6 semitones
OR switch to other "tunings" of instruments:
Tuning:
Guitar(Right), Guitar(left), 5-string Banjo, Plectrum Banjo, Tenor Banjo, Baritone Ukulele, Ukulele (C-tuning), Ukulele (D-tuning), Mandolin
Source: original song
OR Listen to the (original song in some cases): on I-tunes, free for 30 seconds
Computers are pretty kewl at this kind of "stuff"...
