what's the difference?

So here's the question ... Other than its distinct characteristics (by sight alone), what's the difference between a slothead and a peg head in a guitar's headstock? In the past, I've only known slotheads being widely used in nylon stringed guitars, and the pegheads for steel strings. Lately, however, I also noticed slotheads with steel strings. Is there a difference with regards to sound and tone? string/neck tension? anything? or is it just for aesthetic purposes? Your answer(s) to the inquiry will be greatly appreciated. Peace! On the other side of the equation, they are more expensive to build and a pita on which to change strings...
