I have a quick question about string alignment. I've upgraded to mediums on my 12-string, and I need to file out the nut a little, but when I took another look I found a problem I'd never realized before. Should the strings of a 12 line up along the fingerboard side (so they all have the same action height) or along the top (so that they don't buzz on my slide?

or should they be centered?

I can't figure it out!

I'm no expert. But I do belive on any guitar (6 or 12) with a radiused fretboard, the nut or more correctly, the depths of the string slots, should also be arched to match the fretboard. I THINK the distance from the bottom of each string to the fretboard should be the same. I could be wrong. Dave

Like Dave, I'm not an expert either.
It seems to me that if the bottoms of the strings were not the same distance from the fretboard you could have intonation problems, as the higher pitched strings have to be stretched more to reach the fret. It could be too small of a difference to notice until you get to the higher frets.
