This time the GC is Glen Campbell. He was on Dayside today on the Fox News Channel. He's in New York to be inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame tomorrow and did about 6 minutes on the show. He appeared to be playing a Custom Elite Contour bowl. Looked and sounded great. And he didn't sound to bad for a man approaching 70.

Here's a link

http://www.foxnews.com/video2/player05.html?111405/dayside_campbell...

Just pick high speed, sit back, and enjoy.

Glen is great, a real natural. He's been able to maintain his stellar career because he has taken such good care of himself all these years. I've heard he spends two hours every day in the gin, I mean gym.

It's sure nice to see that the first artist to endorse Ovation guitars is still going strong with the newest O in his hand.

Umm, the first endorsee would be Josh White.

I like Glen as much as the next guy, but he couldn't remember the chords to Wichita Lineman ??? But hey, not like I've never made a few mistakes playing out. Guitar did look nice. Black is beautiful. Dave

What struck me was that even though he is clearly not what he used to be (seen the bottom of way too many bottles I guess) talent still comes through.

He has it.

Cheers!

Senior moment. It happens to most everybody now and then, forget the key, the lyrics, the venue. I've forgotten my own songs, now that's embarrassing. Glen is one of the best ever, he's allowed to flub up. He probably had a taste, or a line or two before the show. The talent does come through.

Actually, I don't think he forgot the chords. It was the key he was struggling to find. He started the song a half step lower than normal and then instinct took over and he struck the D chord (which is the correct chord in the right key), but should have played a D flat since he was a half step below the right key.

Anyway, I thought he and the guitar both sounded and looked great. I'm just curious whether that guitar belongs to him or if the studio provided it for him to use. Glen has a habit of showing up for TV appearances and using whatever guitar is handy. He hosted a Christmas special 7-8 years ago that took place at various locations. At one venue, he and Collin Raye were dueting on "Silent Night" as both played Korean made Epiphones!

As for Glen being the first Ovation endorsee, Dave's right, that honor goes to Josh White. However, I don't think anyone would argue that Glen was their first "high profile" endorsee and the one who put them on the map.

I got the idea that it was more of a "key" problem also.
I gotta believe that it was Glen's own guitar. I doubt a T.V. studio would have something like that laying around.

I've watched Glen live over the years and have learned that it's ok to screw up. Just don't make a big deal out of it and keep going. A lot of players live in mortal fear of mistakes.

Amen to that!

One of the best things I was ever tought was to spend considerable time practicing like I was performing. Meaning, if you screw up, just keep going. Early on (man does this go back a lot of years) I developed the habit of stopping and going back if I screwed up a lick. I wanted to get it perfect before I went on.

Learning to play through a mistake is a valuable thing. Lord knows I've had plenty of practice.

Cheers!

Jeff

Last year, during the evening and then midnight services at the Xmas eve church services, I played Jesus, Joy of Man's Desiring (Bach tune). I made mistakes at both service but kept going. The mistake at the midnite service was big enough to where I think people noticed, but I'll be damned if I was going to tell them I screwed up.

Been practicing all year. I can now play that tune and know if well enough to where if I make a mistake, I know where I'm going and can easily move past it (I know, great last words).

Well, we have kind of drifted away from GC and his Elite but this talk about performance anxiety and mistakes is interesting.
When BrianT and I started playing Folkin' Fridays we would cram to have 3 new songs ready to go each month. For the most part we reached our goal....barely. Each time it was a nerve racker because it would be the first time we played them outside of a practice situation. The 10 months we did that really helped to develope a set-list but we have sinced change our strategy. We have decided that if we cannot play the song, be comfortable and have fun with it, it stays in the practice sessions.

Once the song starts, you don't stop, ever. If there is a mistake, work through it. That's show business. Most often, only the musicians know there is something wrong. By the the time the song ends the errors have been forgotten.

". . Jesus, Joy of Man's Desiring (Bach tune) . ."

Moody;
Get yerself a copy of the first Windham Hill "A Winter's Solstice" CD (circa. 1986 or so).
David Qualey does a brilliant rendition of that song. I think he copped the arrangement from a George Winston piano version, but Qualey's version is good enough to make you wanna boot your guitar out into the snow (if y'HAD snow).

My problem is I'm so shocked when I'm not screwing up that I forget what I'm supposedly doing so well and and screw up, which then causes me to concentrate really hard, so I do better for awhile, then the whole cycle repeats over again..... :D

My biggest problem is when playing songs that I really like. At some point in the song I'll find myself getting wrapped up in a favorite section and then I'm suddenly surprised to find the vocalists have moved on without me. I believe this is a variation on SH Fred's experience. er...that would be Slot-Head Fred.

If we started a new thread entitled "Performance Anxiety" I bet we'd get lots of hits. I so rarely play guitar for anyone but me that I don't have those problems. Don't have the other performance anxiety either. My wife wishes I'd do that by myself, too.
