Name one artist who plays, or has/had played an Ovation in his/her lifetime. It doesn't have to be an artist who endorses Ovation, but someone who plays them either on stage, in the studio, or wherever.
I understand that most of you can name more than one, but try to keep it one-at-a-time. Let's see how far this thread will go ... |

Just the other day a good looking young lady noticed me on the street and said...."You're a member of the Ovation Fan Club,right?"...as she handed me a pencil and paper. "Why yes I am" I said proudly!
"Then can you get Al's autograph for me?" she asked!
She didn't like what I wrote on her paper..... |

My shout - Freddie Mercury (not one of nature's guitars hero's I grant you, but a player nonetheless. Also worthy of mention is his classic ad-lib line "This shitty guitar never plays the chords I want it to play" on Queen's Live at Webley album. He was attempting to play a Tele at the time, not an O!)

A couple weeks ago, Jeanette and a couple of the neighbors went (as a goof) to see David Cassidy at a local community theatre. The unanimous consensus was that he totally su-huh-huh-huh-ucked.
He came across like a second rate Tom Jones/Englebert Vegas act.
At one point, he sat on a stool with an acoustic (not an Ovation, btw), strummed a chord and said "ooh, needs bass". He started adjusting the pre-amp controls and totally screwed up the guitar's settings. His guitarist came running out (it was his guitar) to fix it and looked fairly pissed.
It was $20/ticket and they left halfway through . . .

The band by this time was getting a little pissed. They shaved his eyebrows and posed him with the O. They showed him the pictures the next time he came to the studio and he has been sober since. True story. |

But you're right Mr Doonican was Irish, but he was all over UK television and radio in the 60's and 70's. One of my first ever professional gigs when I was about 17 years old was playing rhythm guitar on a Val Doonican tour (that's not something I generally make public) He had a 1621 Artist which was mixed really low, mostly as a prop, while I played his parts on my Folklore. I never attempted to Phil his Cracken. Thank you Mr Doenges for getting this thread into the gutter, where I'm used to residing. |

Someone mentioned Mark Knofler, who I have meet on a number of occassions. Next time I see him I will ask what Ovations he has. Last time we were together in my car, we only talked Strats, as I had not yet bought my 1778 LX. It won't be till next September 06 till the next meeting.

Martin Introduces Dave Matthews Signature Model
August 24, 1999 -- Dave Matthews has been a dedicated fan of Martin guitars for years. His more recent acoustic tour with guitarist Tim Reynolds incorporated the use of several Martin instruments, in particular Dave's Vintage Series Martin Dreadnought and Tim's special effects enhanced D-35.
In honor of Dave Matthews's significant contribution to acoustic music, the Martin Guitar Company is proud to introduce the DM3MD Dave Matthews Limited Edition Signature Model. |

(some of our German brethren may know of this 22-yr-old guitar whiz-kid)
Picked a copy of a new live CD "Ian Anderson plays Orchestral Jethro Tull".
Title pretty much describes it:
Anderson/small band (w/his son on drums), and a Philharmonic Orchestra.
On the front cover of the CD, I noticed a DarkBlueBurst roundhole Ovation 6-string . . .
Young Master Opahle's website lists his equipment which includes two Ovation Celebrities.
He's currently touring with the Greg Lake Band. |

He did some amazing guitarwork with his Ovation in the 72-76 era
Listen to 'Music for Electric Guitar and Low Budget Orchestra' from Studio Tan
or 'Stinkfoot' from Apostrophe
or "Grand Wazoo'....astonishing stuff
He got that sound by running the bridge saddle pickup of the Ovation into one of the stereo channels (clean) He then ran a magnetic soundhole pickup through a Mutron envelope filter
through a valve amp and into the other stereo channel
I'll see if I can find a pic |

Janie Fricke has a beautiful custom made Ovation that was stolen and recovered because her initials were on the fret board. She told the story on a George Jones TV show a few years ago, on which she played the guitar.
I will now cheat and name two, I have a videotape of ROGER MILLER playing an Ovation.

I just disappeared for four days, and am quite overwhelmed by the amount of responses from this thread. This is just way so awesome!! :)
I'm glad to know that many artists, apart from the ones posted in Ovation's own website, play them. Artists I know or heard of, and from artists I never heard of. Either way, I'm glad to know and this thread just made me appreciate O's more and more. :)
p.s.
-- I have to kick myself for completely forgetting about Jim Croce who happens to be my biggest influence for taking guitar in the first place  |

He plays a double neck O on the No Quarter DVD. Oh shit, I was going on memory (a very dangerous thing for me). I have to get that DVD. I haven't seen it in a while at any local stores. Well, in that case, Let me say Jim Croce--and his guitar player too {in case croce was mentioned} (don't know his name). I just saw a video on vh1 classics and they were both playing ovations. |

Location: Mt Clemens, MI USA | My ADD is not getting worse! This quote is from some website discusing the No Quarted/Unledded show.
It says Page DID indeed play an Ovation Double neck.
"...guitars he used in Unledded: an Ovation 6/12 doubleneck; a custom-made acoustic tripleneck, which adds a mandolin to the mix; and several conventional six string acoustics."
And
From factbites.com
"Some of Jimmy Page's acoustic instruments include several Ovation guitars (including 2 Ovation Elite double neck acoustics), a Martin D-28 and a D-45, a Gibson J-200, a Gretsch 12 string guitar as well as mandolins (a Fender and a Gibson), a banjo and a harp guitar."
So, I again submit Jimmy Page as an Ovation player! It was an elite style, cherry colored with black around the edge as I recal. |

I tend to endorse them everytime I perform...people come up..ask me what I play..my sound..etc...and a consveration always comes up about Adamas and Ovation.
Im not on the payroll but I know Ive sold quite a few for them.

From 1977
LB: Onstage I play a (stock) Les Paul Custom, one of those twentieth anniversary models. Before I joined the band I'd been playing a Stratocaster (which I love dearly), but for some reason it didn't sound quite full enough 'live'. I still use a Stratocaster more in the studio than the Gibson, but the Les Paul seems to be a very good, basic, solid stage guitar with a lot of output and fullness. I'm really happy with it. I keep a Strat tuned to open D onstage for "Over my Head". And Rick Turner form Alembic put his little Stratoblaster in it. For "Landslide" my acoustic is an Ovation onstage, although I used a Martin D-18 on the recording. The Ovation's got a built-in pickup; it's great. It doesn't really sound like an acoustic guitar, but it works so much better 'live' than to mike a real acoustic. |

On the august 1985 cover there is a great shot of Earl Klugh (where has he been lately?) playing what looks like a Country Artist with a cutaway. In the same mag there is an Ovation ad with a pic of cwk2 and Kevin Cronin of REO Speedwagon both playing 85 collectors. |

| Nobody has said Joey Eppard. He's my favorite musician at the moment, personally. He uses all Ovation acoustics, not sure what he uses electric.
He's an amazing guitarist. I'm not sure how he plays, but most people say it's like a combination of flamesco and slap bass techniques.
www.purevolume.com/3 - His band. He has half of a solo set from a show on there. Listen to Bramfatura, a super-fast guitar solo by him. It's amazing.
www.purevolume.com/joeyeppard - Him. He has a solo album out and this has a few songs from it. |

During live shows, he also picked up a Les Paul for a few numbers. I saw him maybe a dozen times. If my recollection is correct, the PBS special that airs now and then shows both he and Johnny Cash playing Ovations in a short outdoor scene, and I thought I saw Denver playing an Ovation during a segment in the seating area of the Sydney Opera House. |
