I've been to The Tour 3 times...maybe 4? I've always felt very proud of myself telling my wife how cheap I can do it.

I said the same thing last time, but she did the math and informed me that the cost was $500. She wasn't happy about it since she thinks this interest of mine is about as vital to real life as video games (well...maybe slightly more, but not much).

Anyway...I know all of us have different traveling situations, but I was curious: Has anyone else done the math? What was your cost to make the trip? Add some details like: fly or drive; McDonald's or fine dining; no drinking or...well...plenty?

For me, it's between $800-$1000, between airlines and hotel.... And my wife pushes me to go. She thinks it's important.

Transportation = $??.00
Food and Drink = $??.00
Lodging = $??.00

Meeting and chatting with the people that built the guitar you are playing, learning about how it was built, and participating in one of the best factory tour experiences available in ANY industry = ...

PRICELESS!!!!!

Of course, let's not put the cart before the horse. They have to schedule the open house before we can attend it, and that won't even be on their radar for several more weeks.

Rough estimate
Gas $ 100.00
Hotel $ 240.00 (2 nights) rough estimate
Photos $ 130.00 Film/Processing/filmscan/disc
Video $ 40.00
------------------
Total $ 410.00

Photo cost will be less this year with my NEW digital camera.

I'm going to be in West Hartford during Martin Luther King weekend. That's only about 17 miles from the factory :) . My sister In Law is going to take my kids to Ski Sundown :D . I will be heading back home on Monday MLK day. So if the factory is open and if there is anything that I can pick up for anyone, let me know.

WOW I just noticed what number post this is for me   ..

If it was just me it would be about the same to fly as pay for the gas. Splitting that cost with BrianT saves some money. We would like to split that up even more. Any Michiganders want to joint us next year????

Sharing a room helps. Brian & I both snore like chainsaws. But that only matters to the guy who stays up the latest.

The rooms are not cheap, but they are very nice. I really don't need a kitchen, living room and fireplace. What makes it worth the price is the way we are accepted and treated in the lobby.

All in all... it's worth every penny to me.

For last year's Tour I sold a Breadwinner to cover the:

cheapest Red-eye SEA-?-BDL $325
Homewood Suites - where the peoples was - $240
required souvenirs from airport - $50
Spare change for stuff - $100

It was worth it but probably have to skip this year. I had a great time meeting everyone!

If and when I return I would ship my guitars to the Hotel!

OFCers get a great deal with the hotel. Two nights last year was about $240 with tax and that included two breakfasts. There were no food expenses the day of the tour last year as Ovation provided pizza for lunch at the factory and dinner (with beer and wine) at the ski lodge post-tour jam. I live about 150 miles from the factory and I guess my total cost was about $300. Considering the GREAT time that my son and I had, it was a bargain.

For any of you members who have not gone to an OFC tour, make it a priority for this year.

Woody - ship your guitars to me and I'll drive them up there for you. I figure I would need at least a couple of weeks to makes sure they all fit in the car, pre-inspection, post-inspection and so on.

I would say that $240 for 2 nights in connecticut is a pretty good deal. How far from the factory was the hotel?

Last year Ovation provided two (I think) club vans for transportation from the hotel to the factory and then to the ski lodge. We had about 10 of us in each van. It's about 20 miles one way to the factory from the hotel and another 10 or so to the ski lodge.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but the mere act of creating music is religion enough for me.

I just did a quick and dirty search and i came up with a few hotels in the $75/night range about 10 miles from the factory. I put in the middle of may - 2 weekend nights. One of them was a fairfield inn which is a decent hotel.

You can ride in the vans (pretty exciting if you get Rick Hall's van), or take one of our exclusive "Adventure!" tours with either "Andretti" Al Pepiak or "Off-route, recalculating" Phil Wong.

You'll spend a lot of time at the Homewood Suites. That's where all the truly embarrassing events take place.

Plus they serve breakfast and there's coffee available 24 hours.

You miss my point. Of course it's not vital. But it is something the guy wants and enjoys. It's part of his hobby, and it's not all that costly. To deny him that small pleasure is something I don't understand.

The trip to & from the factory is much further if you are in Phil Wongs car.

I don't think its 20 miles to the factory from the hotel. Maybe 20 minutes. And the ski lodge is closer than 10.
Mitchrx... were you riding with Phil???

And...
What Wabbit said. You would be very sorry if you did not stay where the action is.

Jason - that's why I drive fast... to avoid the bad drivers. I didn't know what a bad driver was until I moved to NJ from NYC.

About 15 yrs ago, I was doing some work for the phone company driving a coin collection truck in manhattan... i learned alot then

There ARE places cheaper than Homewood, but you have to take into consideration:

Proximity to Bradley Airport.
Restaurants/Liquor Stores within walking distance.
Pool. (depending upon the time of year).
The aforementioned free breakfast (and NOT just coffee & pastries).
Dinner offered on certain nights.
Meeting Rooms (which we utilized last year for seminars).
Exercise Room (not that I saw it).
Business Center.

And probably most importantly:
We had carte blanche use of the Lobby/Lounge areas until all hours of the night with a staff that was VERY friendly, and actually looks FORWARD to us showing up . . .

Y'gets whatca' pay for.

Homewood Suites is the ONLY hotel for the tour. They let us take over the place with unlimited all-night jams in the nice and spacious lobby. The lobby jams alone are almost worth the price of the trip.

Oh, and for breakfast they have a couple of Belgian waffle units.
Fresh, hot waffles in the morning, Hmm hmm good!

I figure it was around $300 for me, including travel, hotel, a 12 pack for the hotel and a little food. Everything else was incidental. Except of course for the therapy to get me over the ride with JW and Schroeder back from the Lodge. Some things you just can't put price tags on.

Bottom line - if you can get there, don't miss it. You will not be sorry.

I'm lucky enough in that the main "expense" is the hotel bill. It's about a 2-3 hour drive each way (depending on traffic) and it's a tank of gas (15gals.) round-trip. Not a big deal. It's about the same when I visit w/Bill for the day . . .

The hotel ain't cheap but it's a good deal for what you get (and the Ovation/Kaman Discount is pretty good when you look at their regular rates).
Other than the hotel, my next biggest expense is usually replacement seat covers after driving Templeman around . . .

OK, I started this.

It's an 8 hour/400 mile trip one way to the hotel for me.

$150 for gas, $280 for 2 nights stay, $30-$50 for food.

...and my wife is really great about all this. The rest of the story is she wanted to go with me this year because I couldn't stop talking about how great a time we had. As it turns out, I have 2 friends who want to go so the gas and hotel costs will be divided up.

StephenT and I are going to try and make it back there this year. If he doesn't, I still am going to try. My daughter lives in Boston so I'll probably add some time to see her before or after the tour. I'm figuring it will be at least a grand, about the price of another guitar. On the other hand, what's another guitar if you don't have friends to talk to about it?

It's about a 15 or 16 hour drive for me. In '04 I left out early on Wednesday and planned to drive at least 12 hours before looking for a place to spend the night, then finish on Thursday.....I wound up driving about 16 hours or so (heavy traffic and getting lost)until I was so tired we finally got a room at a Red Roof inn or someplace (I was so tired I don't remember....I do remember it being kind of a dump! :( ) That night I really didn't know how far away we were from Homewood Suites but the next morning we checked out and hit the road only to discover that we'd spent the night less than an hour away from the hotel

In '06 I drove straight thru on Wednesday (called the hotel and asked if it was o.k. to check in a day early and they said "no problem") We checked in about 12 midnight!!(about 15 hrs) I gladly paid the "little extra" for the NICE rooms at Homewood!

The first year we went Brian & I spent a night on the road so we could do the Martin Factory Tour on our way out.

Thanks Jeff....Everyone had a great time! I hope to make it this year but I always seem to make the even years ('04-'06- '08?) If I make it in '07 we'll have to play some bluegrass....

Shucky darn! (can i say that on this forum?) I wish this was gonna be around the first week of June or my daughter was gonna graduate mid-May. My wife's company is sending her to Hendersonville, NC for a seminar the first week of June which just happens to coincide with my oldest daughter's high school graduation in Asheville, NC that same week. Looks like we are gonna scrimp and save in order to pay for me and our other two daughters to go too. My wife has only been to the CONUS once in her life, when we went to Reno to perform two years ago. I'd love to drive her up the east coast to see the sites on the way to CT. Guess I'll settle on taking her a bit west on over through the Smokies to Dollywood.
Perhaps there'll be another mountain-style OFC get together. (hint, hint!)

I envy anyone that can go, no matter what the cost. For our 25th Anniversary we went to Germany. My wife gladly toured 3 car museums and one Porsche factory, took test drives at the Porsche track and I gladly toured a bunch of castles and other stuff. I don't even want to know the cost, but it was worth it.
For my wife's birthday a couple years ago we toured the wine country in Napa, Sonoma and Alexander valleys. Don't know the cost, but it was worth it. A friend had a glass of wine that cost almost as much as your hotel bill.
If I was within driving distance, the cost wouldn't be a consideration for me, because we'll drive 900 miles in a weekend to visit family. This year I just have too many other commitments again to make it. Some day when I'm done with relatives weddings and graduations and other obligations, I hope you still have the tours so I can start joining them. Maybe by then I'll be able to play respectably.

All in all... it's worth every penny to me.

As long as it's not in the mid- to end-April time frame, I'm going. Nobody on bed rest this year; no big moves; no projects going live (until September). You have room for one more?

Jason - it's a good 4 hour drive from here depending on traffic - I live the same distance as Al. I used to have to make that drive alot as one of my customers was up there.

Trboy,
I actually lived in Asheville for 17 years before moving back to Hawaii in '97. I have been through your town many times stopping at TR's main attraction, Burger King, on 25-A on my way to Atlanta. Traveler's Rest is also where alot of Asheville/Hendersonville folks buy their fireworks. I used to be in the food brokerage business and helped Bob Ingle set up many of his stores including the one in TR many years ago. My wife is an accountant with the local Hospice. There is a company in H'ville called MVI that provides her with online support, consulting and software programs. I don't yet know what our itinerary will be like, but I would really like to meet some OCF'ers in the flesh. I can keep up with bluegrass pickers...
I'm hoping to hear from GGG about strummin' some in the mountains too...

Alright,Lanaki is a Mountain Man!

:D ...."TR's main attraction,Burger King".... :D

We've got us a Wal-Mart Superstore now!!!! In fact it located directly behind the BK!(across the highway from the old M-tex building) plus a few more traffic signals too!

Ingles has moved from the location across from the Burger King. They are now located up Hwy 276 (Geer Hwy) almost to Marietta!!(along with more traffic signals  )

I know that Hawaii has some large mountains, but do you ever miss the Blue Ridge mountains?.....

I'm in the same boat as Mitchrx and Phil Wong on this one. I'm about 2 1/2 hours drive to the factory. Unfortunately due to my work schedule, I never made it on the Thursday event. I was able to get there as early as possible Friday morning, just in time for the tour, and then join in for pizza at lunchtime. I was with my wife briefly at the ski lodge, but didn't stay very long, cos we needed to check in the hotel. She also wasn't feeling very well and needed to rest - big time. I did managed to chat and share a tune or two with OFC members during the jam session in the hotel lobby. Overall, I spent about ...
Hotel (one night only): $150
Dinner: $100
Gas: $75

Upon departure Saturday afternoon, my wife and I even managed to take a detour to spend the rest of the day at Mohegan Sun. Luckily, I was playing with a machine that was neither winning nor losing much. I lost about $40 bucks in the three hours I played that quarter slot machine.

It wasn't as extravagant as I thought. Perhaps, arriving at the tour the day after made all the difference. The camaraderie that I shared with fellow OFC members was definitely priceless, and I do plan to go there again this year.

It's not my priorities. Some people think I should spend at least a little time working in order to pay for all these trips. I just asked when "we" talked about going to Hawaii for our 30th anniversary. I said there was no way we're going this year. It's been very quiet since.
Will be in Spain this Spring and San Diego this summer. I'll expect to meet you SoCal guys then. If you can't come to me, I'll find you.

If I ever left Hawaii again, and that is a possibility, the Asheville area is about the only place I'd consider moving back to. (Well...eastern Tennesee is a possibilty too.) I do miss that area and the Blue Ridges. My dad lives up in Mitchell County (Bakersville) where he was born and raised. He's definitely a mountain man. I did not meet him until I was 22. We'll see how my wife likes the area when we visit. She's an island girl.
I'll keep you posted about our plans. Do ya' ever get over to Dollywood?

Perspective is funny. I wasn't here in Washington but 2 weeks and had to fly back to Maryland for the 2nd load. Riding from Dulles to Frederick I actually caught myself saying to the guy that gave me a lift... "Man, I never noticed how flat this area is".

For motorcycles I thought the Blue Ridge Highway and Skyline drive was just the end all.... silly me.

The Cascades are much like Alaska in that to those who ever never been, it just can't be explained.

The "Mountain's" back east are among the most ancient on Earth. They once dwarfed the western chains (which are beautiful... especially the Cascade and the Trinity Alps) you see now. Give the old girls their due and hope you're as beautiful when you're 400 million years old.

On topic of cost, The last time i went it was difficult for me to figure. My dad gave me frequent flyer ticken on american, he reserved the room for me. i believe i stayed two nights
less than $200.
i ate out twice for a total of aproximately $50
the rest of the time i ate at the hotel, and The folks at Ovation fed us great the day of the tour.
Dad had planned to take the trip this year with me,Obviously that's not going to happen now.
I don't know If I'll be able to afford the trip
this year, but i'd sure like to try.
