Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | I have decided to take the plunge and join a praise band. I tried out in November and they wanted me immediately, but my December was already overbooked, so tonight is my first rehearsal with the whole group. They have an excellent keyboardist, drummer, bassist, and the leader who plays trumpet professionally, and some guitar, but just chords, and it seemed like not too many of them, either. He does play a gorgeous Martin, so I can't wait for them to hear an Ovation cranked up. I plan to experiment with equipment until everybody is satisfied with the set-up. Tonight, its the EA-68 Viper with the Trace Elliott amp that provides an XLR out to the house board. I am told that the XLR out on this model is post-effects so as to minimize the impact of the sound engineer from messing with your tone to the house. This, of course, remains to be seen. Wish me luck! |

Here is what the manual says:
PRE EQ socket takes its signal from before the graphic equaliser.
POST EQ takes its signal from after all equalisation, after the internal effects, and after the effects loop, but before the master level control.
Good luck Professor and have a great time! |

Location: Colorado | How did it go? Hopefully well. I am certain that the Lord enjoyed the music coming from your instruments.
You are starting down a road that I too want to travel in the next year or so. But I need to really work on my playing to be up to the standards of our church musical director.
Tell us how your experience was last night. I am anxious to hear.

However it turned out last night with integrating into the group, the One we worship is so pleased with your heart's desire to serve and bring Him glory. This will be one of the most amazing journeys of your life. When you use your gifts for Him, the most amazing things happen ... Blessings! |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | I've been playing for churches for the past 30 years, but primarily solo. These folks are real musicians. The hymns were straight forward to sight read. However, the prelude, postlude, and at least three other numbers for this Sunday are jazzed up instrumentals with a praise-oriented title. They totally sound like something right off a jazz radio station. I'm not that good sight reading jazz chords on the fly. I was able to take the lead and ad lib on one number once I understood the base chord structure, but the others were work. And a whole lot of fun. One other thing . . . these guys have been playing together for at least four years and have cycled through their jazz repertoire countless times. It is all new for me. At least they didn't through me out. |

If you talk to Paul Moody he might be willing to share his 3 Chord Songbook with you!
What instrument comes out next? |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | The Viper worked really well. I spent a lot of time above the 12th fret. If they continue to play that much jazz, it may be the ES-335. If they stick to more traditional numbers, I'd like to take the ADII. One other thing . . . once the leader heard the Viper, he put his Martin in the stand and it didn't come out again all night. On the other hand, he sure can play a trumpet! |

Enjoy. I have found the time spent with our Praise Band to be awesome. |

Don't forget to suggest to your new bandmates that you should go over to one of the local Convalescent Homes and play for them... Check with the Activities Director at the Home... one of the best gigs you'll ever play! |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Well said, Moody. They're all real nice gentlemen, and the leader who plays the trumpet is married to one of the pastors of the church. As I get to know them better, I should be able to determine how committed they are in pursuing further outreach through music. |

Location: Round Rock, TX | I've played at convalescent homes, our local Childrens Hospital, for shut-ins in their homes, hospital patients in their rooms and the neo-natal waiting room at one of local hospitals on Christmas Eve. Nothing else I've played, including church, comes anywhere close. Once you get started you can't stop. Nobody appreciates it anywhere near so much. You'll never be able to give more by playing. It really comes down to this - if I was in the hospital, or stuck at home, or just so damn old that I had to be in a home - what would I want? Some live music, please, God.
Next stop, the local prison. |

Location: big island | a group of my friends and i visited the fire departments and the emergency room at the hospital at christmastime for caroling. it was very well appreciated but rather odd to be singing joyfully as ambulances were bringing sick folk in. the doctors and nurses loved it and wouldn't let us leave. our group regularly plays at nursing homes.
ya just gotta give something back! |

Christmas music or the usual ER mix of weeping, soft depressed voices, mad jabbering, enraged screaming and the myriad of other noises I make? |
