In the middle of this is some pictures of adamas custom shop guitars. If you doubleclick you can enlarge it and see more detail. One on the left is kind of cool. Also gives you a feel for what is happening at NAMM.

Right now, I'm working (simultaneously) on a diamond show, a stationery show, an eyewear show, a giftwear show, a jewelry show, and a fancy food show. All of these are open to the "trade only" and have stringent requirements to admission. If they allowed the public, they be spending a goodly amount of time policing the booths to ensure nothing gets ripped-off, fielding questions from those who are "just looking", or perhaps MIGHT buy one unit, taking time/attention away from those looking to do BUSINESS, and allowing public access would probably quadruple the amount of traffic on an already overcrowded exhibit floor thereby causing legitimate attendees to shy away . . .
SOME shows do offer one "Publc Day", but Security/CrowdControl (post9/11) is a nightmare.
We just opened the NewYorkMotorcycle Show this weekend, and it's a mass of leather-clad human(?)ity lined-up around the corner to get in - mostly gawkers/wannabees who'll probably only "buy" from the accessory/trinket FleaMarket down in the lower level. I have an AccessBadge, but I tend to stay far away.
The REAL "fun" comes when the plastic surgeon's convention comes to town and you have to work out the logistics of the delivery/handling of plastic containers of severed cadaver heads used for procedural demonstrations . . .
. . . ahhh, "ShowBiz" . . .
Your best bet MIGHT be a large, "regional" guitar show, but those oftimes tend to be used/vintage FleaMarkets. |

It was worth it though and they did have some decent O stuff. StuartMiller picked up his Mandacello there. I got some good parts.

If there's a Carolina guitar show in Charlotte this year I could check that out. I guess the exhibitors do shows on a full-time basis. Be interesting to see how many O's and A's show up.

What I found interesting is that Ovation is really getting into shiny bowls. The guitar in the glass case is a 2080 that was hand painted.... the price tag was $10k.
The guitar that Witko is holding is whatever the Ute became, but it's got a shiny bowl that's got all kinds of sparkle in it.
There was also a 2080 with a shiny contour bowl.
Interesting stuff. If you really want to see what the Adamas Custom Shop can do, call for their catalog. When you order a guitar, you can mix and match to your hearts content. |

Body Configuration Options:
glass black bowl
deep non-cutaway handmade fiberglass
contour handmade fiberglass
deep non-cutaway standard on 1687
deep non-cutaway GS, standard on 1680
deep cutaway, standard on 1581
mid-depth cutaway GS
super shallow GS
Body Finish:
prism metal flake
gloss black
Adamas I flake
not sure what was on one of them but actually picked up the guitar thinking it would be heavy-had a finish that looked like the old marbles from the school yard days.
Also, Binding and Purfling - avail on 2080 only:
Creme, Ivoroid binding, tortoise shell binding
Inlaid maple Adamas logo is standard on the 1581 AND price list we saw on the factory site - wrong, Adamas II is deep bowl. |

As that pic was taken he'd just taken off a GB-1 at the 10th fret and switched to a Shubb partial at the 2nd. Harvey pretty much invented the entire concept of the partial capo 30 years ago. Harvey is a real nice guy and a KILLER player. Kinda freaked me out a little when he came back a second year to watch my demo! Harvey and Jeff Hickey designed the 3rd Hand Capo in the early 80's and the industry seems to be getting hip to the partial capo deal right about now. Just watch some bigshot with a ton of marketing dollars try to claim it as theirs. |

Steve Time for a reality check. CA are hardly in a position to be influencing the company that established the concept of a non-wood acoustic guitar in the global market place and have held the position of the ONLY composite instrument to have mass market acceptance for over 30 years.
There were several reasons why I made a point of visiting the CA stand. 1)I thought I liked them a few years ago at NAMM but the ambient noise in hall E made it impossible to be sure 2) They were a really nice bunch of guys 3) I'd run out of the bottle of Louisiana Hot Sauce they gave me. Fortunately this time they were up and out of the mayhem.
So, my impressions. The Dreadnought style guitar sounds exactly like a really expensive, absolutely stellar wooden dreadnought. Which is exactly why I hated it. Great guitar, I'm sure it will be very successful but not for me. The X was wonderful. Has everything I want in a guitar. They had 3 on the booth, all sounded different, 2 I loved and 1 was mediocre. So much for carbon fibre consistency. If there was no such thing as an Adamas I'd play CA, but right now I have no need for one. |

Location: Wooster, Ohio | Paul, No one is arguing against what Ovation has done for pioneering and mainstreaming the concept of a non wood guitar. Without an Ovation there would probably not have been a CA. But innovation I think often happens at the fringes. I am not sure the reality check needs to be here. If you look at the current CA's with the gloss bursting and the custom 2080 gloss burst the similarity is striking. I appreciate your impressions of their guitars at NAMM but for the life of me I can't understand why anyone with an appreciation for what Ovation has done would not just say "go for it guys". I talked with a custom wood guitar builder that knows some of the player endorsers of CA guitar and they say that there is inconsistancy in their sound from guitar to guitar which is puzzling. Competition is a good thing and drives all to be better, the custom shop is a great example of this. Build your own guitar how cool is that. In the end we all get something that is better. Watch I bet int he future the custom shop will have a graphite bowl option, why not.

All 4 of the displays had list prices $4200-$4700. range. CSA will not be cheap.

- change to another stock color is small upcharge
- have them do a custom color is big upcharge
I'm sure there are things they will NOT do, either because it's techncially too difficult or it just violates their "principles".

Also interesting to see that they can do the 1 7/8" and even a 2" neck.

But I think it would be on a standard 1687 type body and fretboard. Just like some of the later slotheads they made for Marcel Dadi. I am guessing that the golden inlays, and decorative golden accented body binding are history as of the 47RI and OFC Guitar.
Originally posted by kid-school:
Also interesting to see that they can do the 1 7/8" and even a 2" neck. They have been doing this all along. Someone in the OFC even ordered a 2-1/8 inch neck. You can't assume all the options listed are mutually compatible. For example I'm pretty sure you can not get a 2080 with a carved slotted headstock on 2 inch neck. Or maybe anything is possible for a price. But based on what my dealer has told me, it seems the walnut slotted headstock neck is only available up to 1-3/4 width. It may have something to do with the jigs and tools used to make them, just a guess on my part.
The other thing to keep in mind, and we do this in my own business, don't assume that just because it's listed as an option that it will really be available. Just an example (I make this up), the public including the OFC screams for slotted carved headstocks. But the factory does not want to do them because they are a huge pain in the ass. So they put them on the option list to quiet the masses, but they price them so outrageously that in the end nobody buys them. We do that in my work. We call it Posturing.
Anyway, it will be cool to see what kind of CSA guitars people spec out and buy. I'm going to set up a part of my website to feature these instruments as they come to life.
