It kind of makes the Gilligan's Island Commemorative Ukulele make sense and look good, don't it?

That was a cool guitar. There's a PCB in there (you can see it through the eye holes) ... not sure exactly what all it does, but the fretboard was sort of translucent and all of the fret markers were pulsating colored lights.

I can't believe that Martin would make something non-traditional. I mean, what's next...formica tops?

I was somewhat taken with a nice OMC Artinger they were showing on their booth ... even it it is somwhat non-traditional.

The guitar also has a soundport on the side (bass) of the guitar (ala Bauerhillboy) that directs a bit of the sound towards the player.

I think they already do, and it's very widely available to the buying public. Their X series which contain high pressure laminate [HPL] materials are formica in some form or another. X series models like the LXM and DXM, for example, have HPL tops, backs and sides. Once made in the U.S., most are now made in Mexico!!! Yay!!! :p

Looking at the photograph alone, that's really interesting to look at. Thanks for sharing it stonebobbo.

Is it me or just my imagination ... that Artinger resembles them Talman guitars manufactured by Ibanez?

In a sense, you may not be far off. And this is already a reality by what Gil is telling us.

There is a speaker company making their enclosures out of Corian instead of MDF (the whole enclosure, not just the front baffle). The initial reviews rave over the their bookshelf speaker's ability to better produce and project in the lower frequencies (60Hz-120Hz IIRC). Forgive me for not being able to name the company, but I loaned the particular copy of Home Theater Magazine that had that write-up to a guy I work with. Beautiful speakers (and expensive) that supposedly sound great, too.

Yeah, I know it's a stretch. But I though I would jump on that tangent and see how far it would take me.

How about a Corian-bowled Adamas? Bad idea? Maybe. Cost prohibitive? Maybe not.

Sure, why not. That way you can slice your cheese on it and then store the leftovers in an Ovation tupperware bowl.

The board inside the Martian guitar is a theremin.

Is that the stuff you take when you have the flu?

OK, I'm kidding. Actually, a theramin built in to a guitar is an interesting idea. Oh, and I knew/know all about the HPL Martins...I just think it's funny that the hardcore Matrin-o-philes bag on Ovations for their "plastic" bowls while Martin puts out the formica topped guitars. NTTAWWT.

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so here's mine ... I think the thing is down right ugly! I guess Martin doesn't seem to be interested in upholding any certain standard except the standard of no standards. I guess what I'm trying to say is that somewhere along the way in the custom shop someone should be willing to say no. But if money is no object, and a company is willing to do anything to please a customer, well...I guess that's that.
I personally wouldn't want my company name on that thing. (like I said ... Just my opinion)

Vince,

I believe that guitar was made for some "star" ... I don't remember who. So the custom shop was probably just following instructions from Artist Relations. Also, it looked much better in person than it does in the photo. (This assumes you are rerferring to the alien guitar).

Vince; I, like you, believe everyone is entitled to their own dumbass opinion. and mine for free! :D

But the entertainment business is more than making pretty noises that disturb no one. Sometimes it's about getting an audience off it's ass to feel some passion, some anger. Sometimes it's just about getting a giggle.

And sometimes it's about redefining bad taste. After all, without knowing where bad taste starts, how can you know where good taste ends?

"I never promised you a rose garden."
and have no fear, your name will never be attached to this guitar anywhere but on these threads.... ;)
