Disagree with the rankings, sure, but the videos are pretty good to browse through.

I know that he's good, but I've never found his solos very interesting. I prefer his acoustic stuff. When I've seen CSNY, Stills stole the show in the "guitar solo" department. |

| I assume this is rock guitarists only.
Knopfler should definitely be in there.
Peter Green should be in there.
The Skunk
Musically speaking that Eric Johnson piece is light years above anything else on the list (with the possible exception of EVH) - its incredible. I've never listened to the guy before, but he has a new fan. |

(See average age poll....)
I notice we are the same age Tim. My earlier years were marked by their devotion to excess, but I stayed banjo-free ;)
On reflection I would have been better off buying a banjo and staying excess-free. :D |

Location: Wooster, Ohio | I know it is probably my age but lots of notes and the difficulty of play to me have nothing to do with good music. Your mentioning of Neil Young. He is probably not the best lead guitarist but the music he creates with it is memorable and awesome. Just can't relate to EVH though I admit he is a awesome player. Give me Neils one note solo on Cinnamon Girl. |

Of these tunes we're chatting about, I think a few don't belong on the list at all. First, there aren't ANY solo's listed although I know that term is mis-used all the time. We are mostly referring to leads, not solos. Also, tunes like Hotel California and Freebird (unless you are referring to the slide part at the begining) are not even single artist leads. |

Back in the days of $2 Midnight movies, I saw a film of the Jimi Hendrix; Isle of Wight concert. Now that was a solo. It was two-hours of Jimi, and three different guitars, on stage. Solo. I don't know if I could sit through that now. But Friday Midnight, with my mind in the right state, It was Good. |

But the Top 100 list has him at #33 for "The Thrill is Gone". Good song, but his lead on "I've Always Been Lonely" is far better and more demonstrative of his style and genius. |

| Yeah Neil Young is on that list if I remember right. I like Neil Young, I play his music all the time..... but Lead???? You gotta be kidding me.....Like BB king, Neil really can get a lot of sound out of one note the difference is he has to, he can only play one or two notes in a lead for any song and you would'nt want to use both of them them up right a way.
I hate list's like this there are so many ways to judge one guitarist against another. It is all apples and oranges, Style, Speed, Emotion, technique, body of work, you just can't ask a question like this and expect a list that has any merit.
Fun to read though.

Location: puerto vallarta, mexico | i found the old jimi footage on youtube and it wasn't as good as i remembered it. still a different side of jimi and maybe a statement about the difference between acoustic and electric "ability". i surprise myself once in awhile with my electric and synth rig, but seldom playing acoustic. signal processing accounts for allot of perceived virtuosity imho, at least to the non discerning listener. |
