Some blogger compiled some videos from Guitar World's list of "100 Greatest Guitar Solos".

Disagree with the rankings, sure, but the videos are pretty good to browse through.

Just a thought about Little Wing, by Jimi...
On an outdoor stage this summer (Portland Saturday Market) I enjoyed this guy playing Little Wing on a Five-String Bass! That was pretty cool. Just a thought...

Interesting list, although I only think about 1/2 the ones listed belong in the top 20, but it's all subjective. Some I can think of are Europa, Sultans of Swing, Easy Like Sunday Morning, Who's Cry'n Now, Crazy Train just to name a few.

As much as a Neil Young as I am, I've never been a huge fan of his lead / electric playing. I know that he's good, but I've never found his solos very interesting. I prefer his acoustic stuff. When I've seen CSNY, Stills stole the show in the "guitar solo" department.

Neil Young lead guitar? Easy. Pick a note, play it, play it again, over and over, same note, 20 bars later play a different note, then back to the original note......

I assume this is rock guitarists only.

Knopfler should definitely be in there.
Peter Green should be in there.
The Skunk

Musically speaking that Eric Johnson piece is light years above anything else on the list (with the possible exception of EVH) - its incredible. I've never listened to the guy before, but he has a new fan.

Very hard to beat. But just remember how long ago that was.......
(See average age poll....)

I notice we are the same age Tim. My earlier years were marked by their devotion to excess, but I stayed banjo-free ;)
On reflection I would have been better off buying a banjo and staying excess-free. :D

I know it is probably my age but lots of notes and the difficulty of play to me have nothing to do with good music. Your mentioning of Neil Young. He is probably not the best lead guitarist but the music he creates with it is memorable and awesome. Just can't relate to EVH though I admit he is a awesome player. Give me Neils one note solo on Cinnamon Girl.

I have to agree about Jimmy Page. I think he is a good producer, writer, visionary and although one of my favorite guitarists, still over-rated.

Of these tunes we're chatting about, I think a few don't belong on the list at all. First, there aren't ANY solo's listed although I know that term is mis-used all the time. We are mostly referring to leads, not solos. Also, tunes like Hotel California and Freebird (unless you are referring to the slide part at the begining) are not even single artist leads.

Back in the days of $2 Midnight movies, I saw a film of the Jimi Hendrix; Isle of Wight concert. Now that was a solo. It was two-hours of Jimi, and three different guitars, on stage. Solo. I don't know if I could sit through that now. But Friday Midnight, with my mind in the right state, It was Good.

I'll second Schroeder's nod to the Skunk. Baxter has many memorable solos. I'm also a huge Carlton fan as well and, though many look down on the blues, a few SRV solos still give me chills.

I've been working up some material for an upcoming show where I need to play leads in the style of BB King. The guy is amazing...has anyone ever wrung more music out of a single note?

But the Top 100 list has him at #33 for "The Thrill is Gone". Good song, but his lead on "I've Always Been Lonely" is far better and more demonstrative of his style and genius.

You're old, Dave, but I haven't heard of half of them. I had heard of Dimebag Darrel, somehow. Must have been from those kids at Guitar Center that I thought were just trying to see who could make the worst noise on a guitar.

Yeah Neil Young is on that list if I remember right. I like Neil Young, I play his music all the time..... but Lead???? You gotta be kidding me.....Like BB king, Neil really can get a lot of sound out of one note the difference is he has to, he can only play one or two notes in a lead for any song and you would'nt want to use both of them them up right a way.

I hate list's like this there are so many ways to judge one guitarist against another. It is all apples and oranges, Style, Speed, Emotion, technique, body of work, you just can't ask a question like this and expect a list that has any merit.

Fun to read though.

Randy

i can't say i even remember this very well, and it probably qualifies more as blues, but i had a video i copied off of tv years ago of hendrix playing a 12 string acoustic. not blinding brilliance but a side of hendrix many don't associate with him. my wife recorded something like masterpiece theater over it (grrrr). has anyone seen that or have a copy of it?

i found the old jimi footage on youtube and it wasn't as good as i remembered it. still a different side of jimi and maybe a statement about the difference between acoustic and electric "ability". i surprise myself once in awhile with my electric and synth rig, but seldom playing acoustic. signal processing accounts for allot of perceived virtuosity imho, at least to the non discerning listener.

That was a terrible list in my opinion. IF steve and joe are #29 and thirty, then the list if void and null.
