I just came back from looking at a 1869 custom legend that a guy had for sale for $200! Why did I let it go you ask? Here are the details and then tell me if I did the right thing.

1) The guitar was bought in 1986, in 1989 the guitar was dropped, damaged and repaired. The repaired area has since sunken in a little and as a result the rosette won't sit flat, and keeps coming off.
2) It looks like the bridge was removed or came off and was glued back on and not a very good job either.
3) There is a crack from the bridge to the end the they say is finish only but at the edges of the crack it point up, looks worse that the finish.
4) Body dings and lot of wear.

I almost took it for a project but knowing me I will never get to it. Do you guy think it is worth $200 in this kind of condition? If it would have been a 1619 or 1719 I would have taken it because of the deep bowl.

Tell me I'm an idiot! Tell me I'm smart!

I would have passed as well. It would have been close, but for the same reasons as you did.

Good move. I'd have done the same.

It would be an interesting project, and I do like my 1868, but the SSB is, ahhh, limited in certain regards. I'd rather resurrect a Balladeer or some other mid- or deep-bowl wreck. YMMV.

That was a very smart move on your part. Even though an 1869 is a very nice guitar to begin with, it's not worth the price, given all the issues that you mentioned in your post ... even for a bottom feeder.

I had a similar experience, where I almost bought a deep bowl legend in near mint condition for $250 from the back of a van that pulled over, while I was walking on the street towards my car. Considering that it might either be a stolen item, or the guy just wanted fast cash to feed his addiction [whatever that might be], I decided to pass on the deal.
