I started a thread on this topic on the Saabnet BB and it ended up being a huge hit. It's interesting to see how certain personalities gravitate to similar brands, styles, and products.

What watch brands do you wear?

Ok, I'll play.

I don't normally wear a watch anymore. Enough clocks around the house. If I go out, it depends on what I'm doing. If it's other than jeans and t's I have a CYMA. Not very well known in this country. For diving Suunto or Citizen, and on the bikes usually Citizen. When I used to do programming I used an assortment of cheap watches as long as they had timers, stop watches and alarms, but most of that is easier to just put into debug routines now, much easier.

It's funny to see it written down. I have some nice watches, but these days I doubt I wear a watch more than 8 hours a month, if that.

I won't wear a watch that costs more than $50.00. I've lost too many expensive ones that it became a joke. And the cheap ones I can't lose, so what the hell. Current watch is a Wenger Swiss Army watch. Exactly $50 at costco. Gift from the wife.

The only watches I own are a Swiss Army something or other (I think it's Victorinox, but it could be Wenger, who knows?) and a Citizen dive watch/computer. I don't wear either of them. I almost bought a vintage Omega Seamaster a couple of years ago just because I thought it was cool. But, then I thought, "WTF would I do with it?"

All of the watches that I currently use were basically free. I have a gold watch that has the name Kodak (Film) with the Olympic rings. I sent in proofs of purchaces for it. I also have a Yankee watch from Sports Illustrated. The last two I received for donating at a blood drive with MetLife- One watch has Snoopy and the other one is a Fossil brand watch. I always thought that it would be cool to get a fancy expensive watch, don't get me wrong the watches I have can be used as "dress up" watches. I just feel that a 10,000 Rolex for example will still tell me the same time as my free blood donation watch.
That way I can save the money for other things like cameras, guitars, etc.

My Mom sent me a pretty nice looking LTD ($7 at Wally-world) and I have a nice Coleman pocket watch with a leather cover.($5 at Goodwill)
I use neither! I have an 87 cent plastic digital wrist-watch that I carry in my pocket. (I sure wouldn't wear it.) After a year-and-a-half, it still works! It was guaranteed for a year.

Does anyone really need to know what time it is so badly that they need a CLOCK on their body?

Citizen Eco that my wife got me for christmas a couple of years ago for meetings or sales calls... otherwise none.

My Dad gave me a Swiss Army Watch when I got my MBA last year... I don't wear it (well... once in a while when I see him) but it probably meant more to me than any gift I've ever received.

...sometimes I think we ought to go "back" to the "old fashioned" WRIST WATCH method of telling time:

...you looked at your WRIST, if you could see it, it's DAY time; if not, it was NIGHT time.

Wow... see thats what Im talking about. How interesting that alot of us here don't even wear a watch or care what watch, as long as it tells time.

Im really surprised at some of the comments such as:

"Does anyone really need to know what time it is so badly that they need a CLOCK on their body?"

To me, that is so bizarre. I feel like something is missing if I don't wear a watch. I have to have that extra weight on my wrist or I know something is wrong. As usual I expected to see the cell phone users that use them to tell time too. Going back to the comment though, the same could be said for just about any device we use as luxury items. I could say "Does anyone really need to use the phone that bad that they need to carry it around on their body"?

I have an Omega Seamaster Automatic (2254.50) that I wear every day. Before that I had a Longines Opposition as an every day wearer.

Q) what's more accurate, a watch that's 1 minute fast, or a broken watch?
A) The broken watch, because it shows the right time twice a day, but the fast watch never shows the right time.

I wear a Seiko Sport 100 I got 20 some odd years ago. The kinetics came out a year or two after I got it. Always wanted one but this one keeps on working. I carry a pocket watch every now then, too.

That's a nice watch, Muzza.

A few years ago I was all set to spend a grand on something really nice. Then I sobered up and went to Costco. Spent $75 for a Swiss Army watch. I love it.

Uh, and Yak... I also tell my friends, "If you ever see me OWNING a cell phone, please shoot me!"
Cuz at that time, I will have violated all my Old-Hippie standards.
Bad enough that I now have an ATM card, but a cell-phone would be just too much!

Seiko digital I bought myself about 15 years ago, and a gold Seiko analog I was recently given as a 10 year gift from work.

Now that I think about it, I wear them less and less lately.

A $5 special that I can bash around at work and not worry if it gets broken. Not sure of the conversion rate but $5 Australian is probably....not much in $US. Funny thing is I can't play guitar with a watch on

Many watches have become like cell phones. They do so many other things it makes it difficult to tell what time it is (make a phone call).

For years now I thought I might like a nice, dressy pocket watch.
But if it's been this long, I must not want it very much.

I have no preference, brand-wise, as long as it is operational and allows me to know what time it is when I need it. Currently, I'm wearing a Seiko.

I have 2 Seiko Sports 100s. One is black and one is a gold dress watch. They are over 20 years old and still work great. I also have an old Omega tuning fork watch. (It hums!)
But in reality, I don't wear any of them. Between my cell, my pager, the clock in my van and 20 different devises in the house that also tell time. A wrist watch is seriously redundant.

Always wear a Seiko Chrono Giugario special design that I got in 1995 to celebrate a big deal. White metal with gold accents. Feel lost with out it.

When I was nursing I used always wear a black plastic Swatch, nice clear white face with proper numbers and luminous hands. Sat pretty flush to my arm and was waterproof which made it excellent for wiping down when it would get splashed with various body fluids, drinks, thrown medications etc.

Longines. Given to me for 20 years at work. Before that I had a Baum & Mercier that I won. Nicest watch I ever had but it was stolen. Have a Citizen somewhere that I'll wear when this one wears out.

I want one of those that just says "NOW" on it. That's cool.

Timex Ironman - (They don't sell a half iron man, which I have earned the right to wear.)

I did drop a couple hundred into a Citizen for dressier occasions.

I'd like a TAG, but I think I'd buy another guitar or an amp or maybe both before that.

Watch technology hasn't increased much since quartz was introduced and you don't necessarily get a better time keeper the more you pay. What you do get is heirloom quality construction and materials. Automatic movements are for the "purists". Much the same way that guitar purists think acoustics are the only "real" guitars.

An automatic watch such as Rolex, Omega, etc... which are COSC Certified can gain up to 6 seconds or lose up to 4 in a day. Only a watch that meets these requirements can be called a "chronometer" (not to be confused with chronograph, ie Stopwatch). Within this specification is considered VERY good for a mechanical time keeper. Even the cheaperst quartz blows this certification away in accuracy.

Thick wrists make it hard to find a good watchband. I usually depend on my cell phone or a stranger to tell the time.

Ain't that the truth.
I have never (not once!) found a metal band that was both comfortable and fit properly so as not to "pop-open." And those expandable metal bands are torturous if you have hair on your wrists.

... and extra large leather bands aren't all that easy to find

the only time i wear a watch is when i get the seldom chance to go surfing. i lose track of time when i am in the water, which is a blessing and a curse! the blessing is enjoying the waves, the curse comes when i have to face the wife about being in the water so long. i wear a casio g-shock to limit the blessing and foil the curse. we gave up cellphones last year to curb expenses and discovered we are much more content without the "leash". in hawaii, we go by what is known as "hawaiian time". that means you show up when you get there. it is rare for meetings to be on time, even church services! the illegal, immoral IRS does not abide by the hawaiian time protocol, unfortunately.

In the daytime, I go by the Sun.

At night, I'll wait until the only ones left at the bar are mumbling drunks & ugly skanks . . . then I know it's 2a.m. (and time for a "closing" tune).

They use the same time in Africa, except there they call it "ish" time. You know, "I'll be home 6-ish" could be anytime between 6 and 11. Most likely closer to 11, unless you owe them money.

As my post count will reflect, I hardly ever comment although I read the OFC board nearly every day. I usually feel like I don't have any meaningful input relative to the Ovation discussions. Although I love Ovations, I play and promote them at every occasion I can, I really don't know the intricate details as do many of you. I just know that everybody loves it when I play mine. I consider this as a learning environment. However as my "handle" might reflect, I am into watches. I collect and repair watches as do many of you guitars. Mechanical watches (the wind up kind) are incredable machines that measure time. The history and science of the development of these "chronometers" is fasinating and very similiar to acoustic guitar. Both are based on the physics of vibration control. But imagine if you had to build a guitar that had to play the same note 5 times per second 24/7/365 for years or decades in any temprature, position, environment and could fit on your arm. The same external inputs that make a guitar go out of tune will make a watch lose or gain time.
Probably Too Much Information, but open your watch sometime and look inside. BTW I wear a Rolex GMT, not for show (I wish it had a Timex face) but because it represents the highest level of science relative to a machine that is designed to measure time.

Same thing in some parts of the middle east and in south east asia, when you ask them if they'll be at a meeting, they say en-shal-ha, which means, God Willing. You can never pin them down as to the exact time, unless you owe them money.

If you read it every day, you must be aware that 'meaningful input' and 'posting' are rarely seen together round these parts.
If I followed that philosophy my post count would be 10.

Your Elgin probably just needs a cleaning. 30 years is still young. I have several over 80 years old that are in the 2 second per week range and a mid 1940s Hamilton 992 that is spot on over any time period.

I have four watches, two Swiss Army models for casual, and two Gucci models for business dress. All four are swiss movement pieces, ages range from four years to 22 years. The leather bands don't last, but the time pieces are excellent.

I also own 2 Swiss Armies....1 Titanium and 1 Ltd Ed (100 made) along with a couple of Seikos. Even though they cost much more, the Swiss Armies tend to get the everyday wear while the Seiko watches are more dressy and for show.

Al's comments about the jules jorgenson self winder that he received for graduation sure brought back some memories. That was also the first "real" watch I ever owned and I wore it for many many years before it finally broke and the cost to fix it far outweighed the cost of a new watch.

Interesting topic, somehow I'm sure it means something. It looks like there are the extremes of no watch, no how, no never and of course the can't live without it(me). Then there's the mid roaders, just give 'em twelve numbers and two maybe three hands and they are good to go.
After wearing a Casio dive watch fro about 15 years, I moved on to a Luminox 8100 series. I like knowing the time all the time. If I wasn't afraid of hurting the Mrs, I'd wear it to bed. This watch glows brightly enough that I can easily see the time in the dark without my glasses.

I own several Casio watches, but they always bothered my wrist after a while. I finally gave up on wrist watches altogether, and I now have a Dakota Backpacker Phase 4 that I clip on to my belt loop. It's kind of dorky, but it works for me.

My boss gave me a Lorus sports watch for Christmas and I was feeling good. Two weeks ago he told me there was no work around and I'd have to start looking for another job. At least I know how many hours I've been unemployed.

Seiko wristwatch my wife bought me when I managed a radio station and needed accuracy to the split second. It's off getting repaired as it gave up the ghost in Mexico a couple weeks ago. (couldn't take the heat, I guess)

But I'm thinking of getting a pocketwatch as my arms are getting too short....
