What watch brands do you wear? |

I don't normally wear a watch anymore. Enough clocks around the house. If I go out, it depends on what I'm doing. If it's other than jeans and t's I have a CYMA. Not very well known in this country. For diving Suunto or Citizen, and on the bikes usually Citizen. When I used to do programming I used an assortment of cheap watches as long as they had timers, stop watches and alarms, but most of that is easier to just put into debug routines now, much easier.
It's funny to see it written down. I have some nice watches, but these days I doubt I wear a watch more than 8 hours a month, if that. |

And the cheap ones I can't lose, so what the hell. Current watch is a Wenger Swiss Army watch. Exactly $50 at costco. Gift from the wife. |

I don't wear either of them. I almost bought a vintage Omega Seamaster a couple of years ago just because I thought it was cool. But, then I thought, "WTF would I do with it?" |

I sent in proofs of purchaces for it. I also have a Yankee watch from Sports Illustrated. The last two I received for donating at a blood drive with MetLife- One watch has Snoopy and the other one is a Fossil brand watch. I always thought that it would be cool to get a fancy expensive watch, don't get me wrong the watches I have can be used as "dress up" watches. I just feel that a 10,000 Rolex for example will still tell me the same time as my free blood donation watch.
That way I can save the money for other things like cameras, guitars, etc. |

I use neither! I have an 87 cent plastic digital wrist-watch that I carry in my pocket. (I sure wouldn't wear it.) After a year-and-a-half, it still works! It was guaranteed for a year.
Does anyone really need to know what time it is so badly that they need a CLOCK on their body? |

Im really surprised at some of the comments such as:
"Does anyone really need to know what time it is so badly that they need a CLOCK on their body?"
To me, that is so bizarre. I feel like something is missing if I don't wear a watch. I have to have that extra weight on my wrist or I know something is wrong. As usual I expected to see the cell phone users that use them to tell time too. Going back to the comment though, the same could be said for just about any device we use as luxury items. I could say "Does anyone really need to use the phone that bad that they need to carry it around on their body"?
I have an Omega Seamaster Automatic (2254.50) that I wear every day. Before that I had a Longines Opposition as an every day wearer. |

A) The broken watch, because it shows the right time twice a day, but the fast watch never shows the right time. |

Uh, and Yak... I also tell my friends, "If you ever see me OWNING a cell phone, please shoot me!"

Bad enough that I now have an ATM card, but a cell-phone would be just too much! |

But in reality, I don't wear any of them. Between my cell, my pager, the clock in my van and 20 different devises in the house that also tell time. A wrist watch is seriously redundant.

Watch technology hasn't increased much since quartz was introduced and you don't necessarily get a better time keeper the more you pay. What you do get is heirloom quality construction and materials. Automatic movements are for the "purists". Much the same way that guitar purists think acoustics are the only "real" guitars.
An automatic watch such as Rolex, Omega, etc... which are COSC Certified can gain up to 6 seconds or lose up to 4 in a day. Only a watch that meets these requirements can be called a "chronometer" (not to be confused with chronograph, ie Stopwatch). Within this specification is considered VERY good for a mechanical time keeper. Even the cheaperst quartz blows this certification away in accuracy. |

I have never (not once!) found a metal band that was both comfortable and fit properly so as not to "pop-open." And those expandable metal bands are torturous if you have hair on your wrists.
... and extra large leather bands aren't all that easy to find |

I usually feel like I don't have any meaningful input relative to the Ovation discussions. Although I love Ovations, I play and promote them at every occasion I can, I really don't know the intricate details as do many of you. I just know that everybody loves it when I play mine. I consider this as a learning environment. However as my "handle" might reflect, I am into watches. I collect and repair watches as do many of you guitars. Mechanical watches (the wind up kind) are incredable machines that measure time. The history and science of the development of these "chronometers" is fasinating and very similiar to acoustic guitar. Both are based on the physics of vibration control. But imagine if you had to build a guitar that had to play the same note 5 times per second 24/7/365 for years or decades in any temprature, position, environment and could fit on your arm. The same external inputs that make a guitar go out of tune will make a watch lose or gain time.
Probably Too Much Information, but open your watch sometime and look inside. BTW I wear a Rolex GMT, not for show (I wish it had a Timex face) but because it represents the highest level of science relative to a machine that is designed to measure time. |

Your Elgin probably just needs a cleaning. 30 years is still young. I have several over 80 years old that are in the 2 second per week range and a mid 1940s Hamilton 992 that is spot on over any time period. |

Al's comments about the jules jorgenson self winder that he received for graduation sure brought back some memories. That was also the first "real" watch I ever owned and I wore it for many many years before it finally broke and the cost to fix it far outweighed the cost of a new watch. |

Then there's the mid roaders, just give 'em twelve numbers and two maybe three hands and they are good to go.
After wearing a Casio dive watch fro about 15 years, I moved on to a Luminox 8100 series. I like knowing the time all the time. If I wasn't afraid of hurting the Mrs, I'd wear it to bed. This watch glows brightly enough that I can easily see the time in the dark without my glasses. |
