Location: Alberta, Canada | I'm sitting pretty low tonight. Our son has been playing bass in a Jazz Trio on a Holland America cruise ship since Oct 3/06. It has been rough not seeing him for so long and we have been anticipating his homecoming for weeks now.
He was supposed to fly into the Edmonton International Airport tonight so we had driven up to Edmonton to spend some time with our daughter before his arrival and then we were all going out to pick him and bring him and his sister home for the week.
At 11:00 AM, he calls to tell us their replacement band did not show up and they were asked to stay another week to cover. Now this would not be so bad if he was coming home to stay but, he only has 10 days and he heads out to another cruise from Florida.
When he finishes this week he will only have 3 days and so may not get to come home. He'll be another 4 or 4 1/2 months out again.
Heartbroke, pretty much sums up the feelings at home tonight.
It is great to have our daughter home for "reading week" though.
I better go grab my guitar before the tears start.

Sucks is right. With him gone and our daughter in university, it's just my wife and I at home(which is nice), so we really look forward to the times when we can all be together. This was going to be a whole week together and has been much anticipated.
And yes he is a working musician; livin' the dream! :) and finding at times it is just a job, but, doing what he loves. (Life lessons are good!) He is a music major and he's working to pay down his student loan before he does his last year, and we are proud of him for that.
This is the end of his second tour. In May last year he started 4 1/2 months doing the Vancouver to Alaska cruises. He was home about 10 days at the end of September and started this last tour, San Diego/Mexico, October 3. He will be starting a Florida/Carribean tour, next.
We sure missed not having him Home for Christmas, and were so looking forward to seeing him yesterday. I think he's a bit homesick too, so we're also proud of his choice to make the hard decission and stay to help out when asked.

"reading week"...is that a canadian thing? I think it equates to "Spring Break". Our daughter is in university, and the week following mid term exams, there are no classes, and is called "Reading Week".

Location: Alberta, Canada | Update; Justin called last night to fill us in on what is happening. The replacement band was snowed-in at the airport in New York and will board ship this coming Saturday, so JD will be coming home then.
He was given the wrong info about his boarding time on the next ship. He boards on March 10th, so we will have him home for 2 weeks. Life just got much better! :) :) :)

Location: Tennessee | Great news for you Dave. I can sympathize ... our Marine was home for the long weekend ... I dropped him off at his base last night (this morning) on my (just a little out of the) way to San Diego. He goes into the Mojave for a month long training exercise, then they start packing up for the trip to the "sandbox". Not sure whether he'll be home for Christmas this year ... if not, it will be three out of four years he's been spending the Holidays with Uncle Sam. But you appreciate even more the little time you do get to spend ... we had 8 hours in the car; good times and he turned me on to some new music. |

Location: Alberta, Canada | Guys, you're sooo right. It becomes more about making sure it's quality time shared when it's in limited supply.
Bobbo, thanks, I felt the same for you when I read your earlier posts of your time with your son. Glad you could get some music time in. I listened to your recordings...they were great. Godspeed to your son. I can read the pride you feel, and completely understand.
MWoody, thanks for the help... your new business card reads...
