Location: cincinnati, ohio | Dumb question I've been meaning to ask for a couple of years -- exactly what ARE string tubes and how would they benefit my "O's?" And where can they be gotten and for how much? I'm full of questions today, aren't I?
Thanx! |

String Tubes and Reflective Bowl Paint are the "Snipe Hunts" of the OFC.
It's hard to give a straight answer in the first page of posts. They arose during a dark time in Standingovations life. He finally defeated his arch-rival Hal but it was a long battle. |

I assume that U did not talk about tennis racket stringing, now that`s a whole different ball game ;)

1. A tubular device used to protect a wound instrument string from becoming impregnated with wood or debris as it passes through the superior designed non-pinned bridge, such as those utilized by Ovation(R) instruments.
2. An unnecessary tool. The reference is usually followed by the remark "Made you look".
I think that Jerome has the patent in his reference section at www.ovationtribute.com |

When we moved from the big city to a small town when I was a kid, one of my new friends from the farm sent me into a parts store to ask for spark plugs for their deisel tractor.
Then there was the 10 pack of Molson I ordered in Alberta because a friend told me that was how they came in countries with the metric system. Dave is just like those friends. |

Now that you mention it, I really didn't notice much of an improvement in sound with them installed, but I thought that it must have just been my untrained ear. Now the sound reflective bowl paint is completely different story ... |

I'd been hearing about it for a very long time, and have read almost every joke written about it, but I never had the b***s to ask it. Based on what I read on this thread, so far, there really is no definite answer. I think I'm better off keeping it that way. :D |

And excerpt from a page talking about SRV's gear:
Finally, he slides a 5/8"-long piece of plastic tubing (insulation from electrical wire) over each string to protect it from the metal "break points." He uses the heaviest piece of tubing he can get that still fits down the tremolo/block hole. Even with this, the high strings still cut through the plastic quickly (sometimes in one set), and when they do, the strings break ...

in fact, since the WRB probably does not float, (per crimsonlake) perhaps we could use these devices on it. |
