Had a beautiful 1778T OF that I sold during my investigations of eBay buying and selling. Regretted it, but had also become enamoured of Gretsch's and things electric.

Over Christmas began missing the acoustic simplicity and sound. Invested in a Maton (thought I would be patriotic and they sounded nice). A beautiful Performer; but quickly realised the tone wasn't their in that rich resonant clear fashion I had on the OF.

Al set me up with a 1778T (thanks again) and am really enjoying this wonderful guitar again. This one's black and whilst I loved the flame, it looks stealth and cool, and sounds great, is easy to play.

So Hi again.

Oh yeah, having sold and bought a number of guitars, mostly Gretsch's, I just can't get over the value of the Ovation, and it's build quality for a USA made guitar. They are impressive on this level as well. Maybe I will try and sell a few to my countrypersons.

Hobie,

I played a Black1778T at the GC a couple of weeks ago. I really liked the look. Kinda Blingless but in a cool way.

It had a nice sound. Oh No GAS......

It wasn't the same as Tommy's it was the EB808CLG with a Grade Solid Bunya top and slightly thinner profile. It was a bit trebly and the note definition was not as clear. After I got it I was thinking this and then my son, he with the excellent ear, pointed it out as well.

Pity in some ways as it would have been nice to have a Maton, but the O is better, and less subject to the slings and arrows that surround general usage.

The O case is better, similar but seems stronger, and the whole set up was cheaper.

G'day again Hobie

Y'know. I've NEVER heard a Maton played acoustically that I liked - that sounds 'full'. They all sound cheap, thin and twangy. The only way to get a 'warm' sound out of them is to use 3 month old strings.

But try to tell an Aussie that their Maton sounds 'thin' and you'll get strung up. (no pun intended)

I'm proud to be an Aussie, but I know where my acoustic guitar allegiance lies - unfortunately it's on the other side of the Pacific.

And, yeah, Tommy E's Maton sounds great. But let's face it, HE could make my HONDO sound like a 47RI.

I've played dozens and I've always found Maton's to be so so.
I've played one of Tommy's Matons and it is sounds alot better than the average off the shelf model.

The O case is better
I am impressed with the case that came with my 1771-LX.

I just took part in a thread about (crappy) Fender cases in the forum over there. Many are defending this by saying the money goes into the guitar and the buyer saves money by not having to pay for a nice case. That makes some sense, but with the O, I got excellent craftmanship on the guitar, a great case, and an amazing price. Hmm . . . maybe some of the $1400 I dropped on that strat went toward advertising.

'Cuz the Fender case I got is a POS

Hi Lanaki

Well, I used to. I promised my wife that I wouldn't play it any more coz she HATES it. (I could still play it if someone wanted me too, as long as SWMBO wasn't within earshot)

I like playing Neil Young stuff, coz I can't sing very well, and it lets me impress people by playing harp at the same time as playing guitar.

I still play Out On the Weekend, My My Hey Hey and Comes A Time with the harp, as well as Needle and Old Man (my theme song)

Anyway Lanaki, how did that question slip into this thread. Another famous OFC right turn?

We just need Ozwatto to add something to this thread and I think thats ALL of the current Aussies posting in the same thread, unless I've missed someone. Not many of us non-Maton Aussies around.

Did you get the rectangular "deluxe" case or the molded universal version thats made for both the Tele and Strat?

I have the molded universal one and its not very good, like you have said. My O case is made so much better. The materials aren't much better, but the fit and the way the lids line up is way better. The difference is like closing a door on an '85 Chevy Camaro vs an S-class Mercedes.

muzza,
i inquired if you played "heart of gold" because, although i do not play many songs on the harmonica, i do a pretty decent rendition of it accompanied with my guitar. unlike your wife, mine wants me to play it often and is even twisting my arm to get me to make it my next youtube video. after watching other youtube versions of this song, i think i should add mine just to help ol' neil out a little.

And we all await being embarrassed by your abundance of talent on YouTube yet again :D

And here I am hoping you wanted me to teach it to you. :(
